Hoffman had been a travelling salesman, and he definitely had the necessary charm. He was making his way through the Viridian Labyrinth but never quite finished his tour. Instead, he was smitten by Duchess, who was, he claimed, "the greatest beauty I've ever seen." It was very easy to appeal to a dragon as vain as Duchess with such silver words, and Hoffman had plenty of those. What was more difficult was getting her to see him and care for him, rather than just his compliments. He'd had one mate before, she was beautiful too, but had lost interest in him after their first clutch. She had sent their children to be monks in service of the Lightweaver, without consulting him, and then she had vanished to the Scarred Wasteland. He did not want such a scenario to be repeated. He wanted to raise noble, powerful children. Hoffman continued on his way, after some months in the kind company of Meristema. Duchess would miss him, or she wouldn't, and he would need to make his desicion on that. On his way back through, a month after he left, Duchess hadn't seemed to have missed him at all. There was no reason for him to hang around the clan, so he took his leave once more with a heavy heart. He didn't get very far before Duchess caught up to him, tearful and stamming. Vanity had made her proud, too proud to admit she missed him, to say that she had been looking for a sign of him every day since he had left. She told him then, and that she was sorry. Sorry for her selfishness, and it might still be selfish for her to say, but she didn't want him to leave. It wasn't selfish if that was his wish too.  Hoffman's career as a salesman ended (as did his possible dabbling in piracy) and he became an envoy for the Meristema Clan, travelling to other Clans, forging trade deals and alliances. He takes the beautiful Duchess with him on occasion, who has grown into better manners, and their child Siderone who has grown to become Hoffman's assistant in matters of diplomacy.
