"It metabolises the rotting floor of the woods and produces this incredibly powerful mykotoxin that has been taking the form of a vitriolic sludge, oozing from the mycelium and gathering in the one low spot of the forest, slowly sinking deeper as it eats away at the rock, forming the pit. What we call the seemingly 'crystals', that's likely some product our body creates from the spores we consume from the environment at all times. So far we just know that magic catalyzes the process.
And the illness, well, mykotoxins are known to cause all sorts of mayhem. And parastic fungi are not so uncommon. In fact we have reasons to believe the fungus is very much capable of manipulating our minds just enough to make us not notice we are slowly being digested."
And she screamed and screamed...
I thought that of all the dragons in this clan, she should be the one who could handle this concept. Maybe I was wrong to assume.
