Estel
↠ he / him
↠ Wanderer
64589758.png

Estel was not one to get along with others, though it can't be said that he had ever attempted to forge relationships. Unlike most Skydancers, Estel is not good at reading others emotions, and privately worries there is something wrong with him. When put on the spot, he says an incident in his childhood injured his antennae, but he does not know why he cannot seem to understand others. Estel doesn't trust the intentions of others, and he tends to have a rather bitter world view. The very few people he trusts are ones he had a gut-feeling about, which has never led him astray.

History

There was always a divide between Estel and those around him, not that he was one to actively attempt to forge relationships. Estel is often cold or abrasive, and seeing others act contrary to their words inspired distrust in his perception of others.

As he was travelling through the Starfall Isles, Estel happened across Melmë by accident, seeing the distressed Fae being chased around by a pair of young dragons. Estel didn't think much of helping the Fae from their grasp, but found that Melmë began popping up everywhere, following Estel in his travels. At first, Estel was incredibly wary of this stranger, but soon he came to quite like the company. He would look forward to seeing where the Fae would pop up from each day, and liked catching snippets of murmured song as Melmë followed from a distance.

Each night Melmë would sleep not far from him, finding whatever nest was available in a lush canopy or in the hollow of a dead tree. And each night Melmë got a little closer, until, one rainy night, Estel relented, and let the Fae tuck under his wing.
Now, he finds it difficult to sleep without feeling Melmë’s warmth, nestled in his fluffy mane or tucked under his chin.

It makes Estel happy to see Melmë in their element, excitedly showing him their favourite plants and coaxing them to explore nooks and crannies in the clan's territory that would have otherwise escaped him. In fact, Melmë's very presence makes Estel happy, though they can't profess to understand why the Fae would want to spend time around him.

Relationships

64876170p.png Melmë is Estel's companion, though there is a lack of communication as to what that means. While Estel isn't good at conveying his emotions due to his personality, Melmë rarely talks at all, and prefers to use actions to convey their love. Estel has his moments of uncertainty, but ultimately just wants to stay by Melmë's side.

First Meeting

CW: blood, minor violence

The great spires of the Crystalspine Reaches cast long shadows as Estel flew toward the towering Focal Point. He could see his own long shadow before him, as sparkling water gave way to bare earth, and then to grasslands and forests.
____Estel was thirsty. He had flown for over an hour now, though admittedly he had been able to glide on the wind for much of it. He could see the tell-tale glint of a river twisting through the woodland below, and began to descend leisurely, skimming the treetops until he game to a space where they opened up. The lake was not large, but the trees that surrounded it were towering. Many dipped their roots in its calm waters, and Estel wondered briefly at what lay below its shimmering surface.
____As he drank from the edge, savouring the feeling of grass beneath his feet, a snatch of snarling, followed by gleeful laughter, reminded him that these woods were probably not desolate. No scouts or guards had come to meet him as he flew over this land, so perhaps it was home only to wanderers like himself.
____The sounds grew louder, shifting from playful to aggressive and back again. Two figures dashed from the forest edge, throwing a ball between them; a pair of Wildclaws, young and probably freshly kicked out of their home lair. They did not notice Estel's presence as they continued to play, until a particularly vicious swipe sent the ball tumbling towards Estel, where it unfurled at his feet.
____Not a ball, after all, but a small, trembling Fae. Blood dripped from their pale hide and they stumbled as they tried to get to their feet.
____The Wildclaws bounded after the Fae, drawing up short when they noticed Estel.
____The larger of the two, a deep blue, tilted his head to the side coyly, and took a step closer. "Hey, mind returning that to us?"
____Estel made a point not to get involved in other dragons' business. Nothing good ever came of telling others what they can and can't do.
____Except he could feel the Fae's shivers as it retreated between his front legs, and he felt an instant- and extremely surprising- surge of protectiveness over this small being.
____"I think you've gone far enough," Estel said gravely.
____"Come on, we're just mucking around," the blue one's tone remained light and humorous as he continued to approach.
____"And it's really none of your business," the second said, false sweetness failing to mask her icy tone.
____"I said, you've gone far enough," Estel repeated. He stood unmoving above the Fae, though couldn't help his muscles tensing when the feathers stood up on the blue one's head.
____"What do you care?" The distance between them was rapidly decreasing, and Estel could smell the other's bloody breath as he hissed. "Get out of here, before I teach you a lesson."
____That almost made Estel chuckle. The pair of them were clearly as green as spring's first saplings, muscles undefined beneath their unmarred skin. But the two had annoyed him, not to mention been quite cruel to the Fae, so Estel found himself flying at them without warning.
____The pair, clearly taken aback, only held their own for a few seconds before deciding this was more trouble than it was worth and took off, trailing vicious insults. Estel gave his wings a shake, and turned back to the Fae, who was watching him wide-eyed.
____Unsure of what to say, he just heaved a sigh and departed into the forest, fighting the urge to look back.

Quiet Conversation

"The day we met..." Estel began, before trailing off awkwardly. He'd already got the Fae's attention, however, and they watched him closely. He had really gotten no better at reading their expression, he thought, almost bitterly.
____When Estel didn't continue, one of Melmë's head fins folded back, almost like an animal tipping its head to the side. Estel couldn't help but find it just a little bit cute.
____"Aren't Faes supposed to have strong powers? Why didn't you use them against those Wildclaws?"
____Melmë lowered their head, almost imperceptibly, and didn't answer.
____"Did you run out of magic?"
____After a moment's pause, Melmë slowly shook their head.
____Estel pondered them thoughtfully, watching the way the Fae seemed to curl in on themselves, looking even more tiny than usual. Their wings were folded close around them like a shield, their long tail was wrapped twice around, making them look almost bundled up like a ribbon-wrapped gift. Estel gave a quiet snort and the Fae looked up, eyes wide, before dropping their head even lower than before.
____"I-I wasn't laughing at you." Estel didn't know why he felt panicked that the Fae might have misread him. If anything, it might make Melmë might stop following him around like an overly-loyal familiar. "I just- um. Well, it doesn't matter. Why didn't you fight back, then? Can you not use magic or something?"
____At this, Melmë's crest drooped. Though their face remained expressionless, Estel could guess at what it meant. "I'm not going to laugh at you."
____They shot him an almost pointed glance, one of their fins tipping up just slightly before drooping once more.
____"Is that it, then? You can't use magic?"
____Melmë slowly nodded.
____"Is that like... are you still learning?"
____Melmë shook their head.
____"So... you just can't use magic?"
____Melmë nodded, and then spoke for the first time, in a quiet, flat voice. "There's just nothing."
____Estel was taken aback that the Fae could in fact speak. After a moment he asked, "You can't feel it at all?"
____"I can feel it... but I can't use it at all. Something's... broken."
____Estel was quiet. Though he felt embarrassed to admit it to the Fae, he understood quite well. His own inability to sense the emotions of other dragons- one of the most celebrated traits a Skydancer should possess- was a thorn in his side. The word 'broken' was one he often thought of in his own situation.
____But saying it out loud is too hard.
____They sat in silence until Estel finally suggested they get some sleep. He wanted to say the Fae could stay with him, if they wanted, but Melmë left in a flash to find a tree hollow to spend the night.
____Estel listened to the quietness of the forest, hoping Melmë had found somewhere safe. He hoped... the Fae didn't feel as alone as he did.

His colors are gorgeous. The apparel which you have bestowed him with makes him look like a regal prince. But a dark regal prince, which makes his personality believable. I love that he has a friend, even if he doesn't quite fully understand it. The art in his bio makes me laugh and though he is abrasive and cold, it just makes sense for him to have that reaction. I think he'll eventually warm up to others as he learns emotions.

AAAAAA, so pretty! the way the colours are match the outfit so well with the dark reds and blues, it's a super unique way to make maroon/purply colours. I looove the rich blues matching the raven and dusky apparel. I have a new appreciation for stained.
