I think it would be neat if the banescale had some kind of shapeshifting powers that he couldn't control at first, and as a result he became shunned by his peers despite his good-hearted nature. In his exile, where he spent most of his time alone, he learned to control his powers and used them to his advantage to blend into his forest-y surroundings and secretly help anyone he came across who were in trouble. Eventually he gets discovered by another dragon who was an outcast from their place of origin, and he gets taken in to a new clan where he is celebrated for his differences and given the opportunity to give guidance and solace to anyone who seeks it.
