"You’re burning up” Hansel’s voice echoed with worry as he pressed a hand against his sister’s forehead. Gretel moaned, shifting in the makeshift nest as her whole body protested the movement. Her head pounded with a migraine and her voice was a hoarse rasp, “b-rother?”. “It’s ok, I’m here.” Hansel reached down to take hold of his sibling’s hand, squeezing it in reassurance. “Your wounds. . . they’re infected. You need to rest.” At least, that’s what he thought. It was the most logical conclusion for his sister’s ailment, but Hansel wasn’t prepared for the extent of the disease his sibling had contracted. With a sickening pop, something in Gretel shifted and she let out a pained cry. Hansel looked down to see that the dainty hand he was holding had contorted in his grasp, the bones warping into an unnatural clawed appendage. He stared down in shock, uncertain what was happening as his sister’s pained moans slowly warped into the low growls of a beast. “G-Gretel?” The Imperial squeaked, but his sister only breathed heavily as her form continued to shift. Tufts of thick fur and feathers erupted from between her scales, her teeth elongating; her entire body expanding. “. . .Gretel?” Hansel was trying to hold back a fearful sob and his voice cracked as he spoke. He extended a hand towards Gretel’s shivering form, stopping short before he touched the bristled fur. His sister’s gaze snapped towards him suddenly, feral eyes staring from her face before she roared and lunged towards a nearby window. She easily broke the glass before running off into the night. “Gretel!!” Hansel called after her, but his voice was lost amidst the patter of rain and billowing wind. Tears streamed down Hansel’s face as the overwhelming realization of his sister’s affliction hit him. He wept in despair, his vision blurry as he stared past the broken window towards the stormy sky and the faint outline of a full moon that shimmered from behind the clouds. Gretel came limping home the following morning, her mane tangled with dried leaves and twigs and her claws caked with mud. Hansel saw her approach in the distance and ran to embrace his twin. Both of them sunk to the Earth, holding one another. “I promise, we will find a way to break this curse” Hansel muttered. “Even if it means tracking down every last one of Barghests”. Gretel nodded solemnly, staring down at her hands. “Have they not given us a most formidable weapon?” Her voice was a whisper as Gretel looked down, watching as she willed her claws to shift. “I will not rest until I can control it”.

"Oh dear" The old witch's words came through blackened teeth, her breath like dark smoke as she spoke. "Poor lost children in the woods. . . it'll be ok. Just come home to your Godmother"
