 The minute natural sanctuaries of the Scarred Wastelandare a closely-guarded secret. Throughout the barren landscape, pockets of flourishing greenery lay hidden between the rotting flesh and bloodthirsty wildlife. Their existence has yet to be empirically proven by scouting parties or curious researchers. Whispered rumors of their existence originally sprouted from the personal accounts of a rare few lone travelers who claimed to have found one such haven. When they were at their weakest and seeking shelter, they say, they found themselves within a secluded grove, surrounded by beautiful trees and brightly-colored flowers. Each hushed voice whispered that they had easily found an abundance of food inside, no matter their preferences, with a pristine waterfall spilling into a crystal clear pool of water to quench their thirst. There were no predators to fear when they slept, and the unrelenting haze of the wastes outside had become a pleasant warmth inside this patch. If they came sick or injured, they would stumble upon the perfect ingredients for a cure. When they slept beneath the canopy, they would always wake up feeling completely refreshed. The grove was always the perfect sanctuary for whoever found it. Whenever one sought out their sanctuary again, however, it was as if the land had closed off, leaving nothing behind but bones and cracked earth. Mountains have been demolished in hopes of finding an oasis underneath, but nothing was found among the remains. Some believe these miraculous refuges are sacred remnants from the Plaguebringer's last feud with the Gladekeeper herself. Seeds and divine ichor were rent from her hide in their power struggle, and left to grow and prosper throughout the third age. Just as nature cannot exist without decay, decay, too, cannot survive without growth to combat it, continuing their eternal cycle of life and death til the end of time. ...though that still doesn't explain the intricate, highly decorated statue on an altar by the water. |
