Maalgwyb was not meant to be. He emerged from the crypts, from the very alchemy that has aided the Cathedral's growth so very much over the years.

The sight of him provoked screams of horror when he stood, which turned into terrified silence when he spake.

 There are rules to be followed when one tampers with alchemy. Certain reagents are not to be used; powders, claws, liquids that most understand should never, ever be used.

Those rules were disregarded in favour of Maalgwyb's creation by an alchemist who wanted to experiment. He emerged from a mixture of blood, sinew, and bone, and was able to already speak and acknowledge others when he first stood upright. While the Cathedral as a whole were horrified, they allowed him to stay within their halls, if he had the right temperament. He swiftly proved capable under Catharsis' tutelage, and now helps her oversee the very labs in which he was created.

His manner of speaking is odd and unsettling to many, though most attribute it to his unorthodox birth. In any case, his understanding of alchemy is second to none, and his knowledge in invaluable.
