In Norse mythology, Níðhöggr (Malice Striker, often anglicized Nidhogg) is a dragon who gnaws at a root of the world tree, Yggdrasil. In historical Viking society, níð was a term for a social stigma implying the loss of honor and the status of a villain. Thus, its name might refer to its role as a horrific monster or in its action of chewing the corpses of the inhabitants of Náströnd: those guilty of murder, adultery, and oath-breaking, which Norse society considered among the worst possible crimes.

No one but Loki knows what exactly Nidhogg did before he came into the clan, but many suspect it wasn't anything nice. Everyone respects Loki's decision though, and so far there have been no incidents in the lair with him involved. The hatchlings even came to love him, since he carves beautiful wooden and bone toys for them with his sharp silver knife. Sometimes Loki sends him on errands outside of the lair, which strangely always occur at night, when almost no one is awake to see him go. Even the guards only catch sight of the gleam of his knife when he goes out. Strangely enough, it doesn't gleam anymore when he goes in. Recently he brought back a young Fae named Ratatoskr with him, and when he's not doing his job, Ratatoskr has taken to following around Nidhogg everywhere.
