Current Home
Earth is eternal, earth is forgiving, earth is home. These were the words that she grew up hearing, the sacred mantra of Dunepoppy’s people. Each of them were mages, dragons who could control magic with barely a thought. They could move the earth with their minds, erecting monuments to Earthshaker and the other deities, creating solid homes to protect the young hatchlings and mages in training. From a young age they were trained to be able to use the magic that constantly surrounded them, to first feel its power before they ever used it. It was hard work for the hatchlings but the longer they worked at it, the more powerful they grew to be.

Dunepoppy worked harder than any of the other hatchlings. Waking early, she spent hours meditating, yearning to feel the magic that the other hatchlings could feel almost naturally. At night, while the others were given time to play and be children, she pearlcatcher would find solitude once more and meditate further, to the point that tears would stream down her cheeks. No matter how hard she tried, Dunepoppy could not feel the magic that danced in the world around her. As those around her surged forward in their training, the clan elders simply gave her looks of disappointment and turned away from her.

The mage clan believed that there was no need for parents. When a dragon was born, it knew not who its mother or its father was. There were mages tasked with the raising of the children, mages who had no children of their own among the hatchlings and didn't grow attached. No dragon could be treated with any more or less love than another and ensuring that no hatchling knew its parents. Dunepoppy knew why the clan was this way but she had also seen how other clans raised their children. The mage clan moved often for they moved as the magic did, never in one place for too long. Often times they would pass through other clan territories and stay the night. On those nights, Dunepoppy would sneak away from her clan and see how the other clans lived. Adults and hatchlings slept together as families, keeping each other warm and safe. The simple difference that knowledge brought her changed everything the pearlcatcher thought she knew.

After that, she began to search for who her parents were, or at the very least who one of her parents were. It took longer than she hoped it would but eventually her quest came to an end. Her mother turned out to be one of the clan’s greatest architect mages, a dragon who could construct magnificent statues and buildings with a single thought. Knowing that her own mother was a powerful mage made her want to work even harder. Instead of focusing on feeling the magic around her, Dunepoppy instead worked to see the magic. It was easiest at night when everyone else was asleep, when she could focus on looking around at the life around her. It wasn’t until she stayed up on a moonless and cloudness night that she finally caught a glimpse of the magic around her.

It was like watching ribbons dance through the night sky. It was fluid and moved with a grace she hadn’t seen anywhere else. Each ribbon was a different color, connecting to a different living organism. The sight brought tears to her eyes and filled her with such joy that she knew that she could do it now. She could become a mage.

The morning after that Dunepoppy trained harder than she ever had. The clan elders looked at her with surprise and pleasure. They saw the power that she now had, saw the possibility of that power. Much like her mother, the pearlcatcher took quickly to architectural made work, constructing buildings that would stand for as long as was necessary. Seeing that her power could be used for more than that, the mage elders asked why she’d chosen that. There was a slight hesitation before she explained that it was what her mom did. The mages were horrified. The clan had survived for so long, had been successful because none of the dragons knew their parents. The records were kept secret and now that it had been found out, they were afraid that it would tear the clan apart.

Hours after revealing her secret, the young pearlcatcher was banished from her clan. She had nowhere to go, no one who would take her in. A banished mage was considered an omen of bad tidings and since she was coming from one of the most powerful clans it was even harder. Searching far and wide, she yearned to find a clan who would accept her. A clan who needed her powers just as much as she needed a home. It would be years before she found that clan, and during that time she began to rely even more on magic. In times of struggle, she watched the threads of magic waft through the air at night, meditating on its power and what it could be used for. Beyond her powers of building Dunepoppy learned the power of healing and words of power that could combat large numbers of enemies.

The Clan of Clear Water was the clan she was looking for. They accepted her without question, not caring about her past. Few even understood just what a banished mage truly was since they had no mage clans in the Sea of a Thousand Currents. Their appreciation of her magic only grew as she used it to help her new clan. Her own heart grew and she realized this is what clans should be like, open and caring about the members of their clan. Her heart ached for the family she had once had but in her new clan, Dunepoppy could have her own family. She could raise her own hatchlings, teach them the magic she had been born to respect and fear, and she could love them. Earth may have been eternal but water was ever changing.
