"I will not risk all the life a vast river supports for the sake of spareing a single crop field."

Carta is a Tunosset, a member of a nomadic clan responsible for cleaning and maintaining Sornieth’s many rivers. It is a thankless job that many clans wish she wouldn't do as the process causes flooding. During the winter season when the rivers freeze Carta returns to the Draumer Den and earns her keep by training the cold season’s recruits in basic combat. Generally unpleasant in appearance, especially to those with sensitive noses. Carta’s paws and legs are caked in the muck of the stagnant rivers she cleans. Worse still, she frequently crafts her apparel from things she finds in the riverbeds including waterlogged hides and bits of bone. Born blind Carta was trained to see using the utilizing a special technique only known to the Tunosset. This technique allows her to see any water that is currently moving including the water that makes up the pumping blood of most living things. Her unique perspective makes her a bit clumsy while navigating her surroundings as she still has to rely on hearing and feel to navigate inanimate objects but allows her to detect and discern the presence of a fellow dragon with unfailing and unnerving accuracy. If her appearance doesn’t succeed in repelling a dragon upon first meeting her career choice will. Tunossets, by the nature of their profession, are viewed by most clans as an ill omen, especially clans who live and work close to the Icefield’s riverbeds. Because of this Carta is rarely well received by others and has since learned to be self sufficient when traveling. Despite her size Carta manages to move largely unnoticed, the only sign of her passing is the rustling of leather and a sulfurous smell. She speaks very rarely and leaves little room for argument or interruption when she does choose to converse. Carta was hatched in the Draumer Den on the Decennial anniversary of it’s conception as part of a grand celebration. But after it was discovered that Carta was a Tunosset she was sent to a secret and sacred location for training. She returned some years later fully grown and harboring a deep distrust of others. During the course of her training Carta learned full well what the standard opinion of a dragon of her profession and, having not had the time to get to know her clanmates before leaving for training, expected to be rejected from the Druamer Den upon arriving. When she wasn’t immediately dispelled but instead welcomed back with open arms Carta remained suspicious that this too was some sort of ruse to trick her into letting her guard down. Regardless of these fears Carta returns to the Den every winter season without fail and the Den in kind has always kept a room available for her. Her natural distrust of others makes befriending Carta a challenge, of all the Den’s residents only two have managed to earn her faith. Argonia, who has never once wavered in her insistence that Carta will always have a home in the Den and Tullius, who earned Carta’s trust through persistence and a great deal of time. In the beginning Tullius lack of revulsion at Carta’s appearance only served to make Carta more weary of him. It was only after a great deal of time spent working together that Carta realized that Tullius truly did not care that Carta spent much of her time covered in mud and spelling like stagnant water and genuinely liked her company. It was Tullius who first encouraged her to take up training as a means of income during the winter season. The two have been close friends for years and have been dancing around becoming something more for sometime. Fortress of Ends Excavation Carta honestly couldn’t care less about Marco and his failure of an excavation or about the many clans they cut ties with as a result. So long as she has a place to call home all else is irrelevant in her eyes. That being said, at Tullius’s behest and Argonia’s insistence Carta has agreed to assist Tullius in advancing training during the winter months to aid in making up for the lost revenue. |
