Ryan's investigation into some shady events led him to Joe, initially for his assistance because of his expertise, during which time the two dragons became very close friends. Though he wouldn't admit it to himself or anyone else, something in Joe appealed to his own buried dark side.

When Ryan discovered that Joe was actually behind the events, he became obsessed with hunting him, to the point that his own Flight wanted nothing more to do with him.

With nowhere else to turn and still drawn to Joe despite his knowledge of his darkness, Ryan fled in the night to the Tangled Wood and sought him out. Joe eagerly took him in.

Ryan's one time partner Tyson and new partner Mike joined him, fleeing Lightning for both the way Ryan had been treated and for their own reasons, and while Joe tries to slowly draw Ryan's darkness to the surface, the two of them try to keep him from slipping too far.
