Black Woolen Scarf
Although the day was swelteringly hot, I donned a black woolen scarf to protect my hair from the wind. My destination was the Nu'uanu Pali Lookout.
The journey took me slowly up the tree protected path where a canopy of green soothed my spirit. In my mind's eye, I anticipate the vision of a steep drop down where the land and sea stretch out before me. I recall the battle story which took place long ago.
The walk is long and strenuous. The majesty of the Ko'olau mountains raise up on either side with their magnificent jagged cliffs. The winds are resisting my advance; they whip around me, but I finally reach the edge. Childhood memories playfully run wild. The view is surprisingly more satisfying than I could have imagined.
The scarf wants to come off, but I try to keep it securely around my head to prevent my hair from whipping into my lipgloss. The scarf scratches me; it is ill-fitting and it is confining. I remove it and for a moment hold it up in my two hands for the wind to beat against. I contemplate my actions. And then I let go. I am free!

2016
This story is inspired by the struggle I am having with two toxic members of my family; a mother and a daughter. Be careful what you pass down to your children. Toxicity, not cleaned up in a family, will destroy many lives. Thankfully, there is a remedy to sin. Truth. Love. Justice. The Light has come and I feel His glory!
Arise, Shine; for Thy light is come, and the glory of the Lord is risen upon thee. Isaiah 60:1
Although this journey is not yet complete and probably won't be for some time, God is slowly revealing my path. He gave me the short story above last night before my head hit the pillow and the strain of the day was complete.
It is very hot here in California. About 97 degrees. The week has been as high as 104. This is reminiscent of the pressure I have been under during this last year. This heat/pressure is represented by the wearing of the black woolen scarf. The black, woolen scarf is a toxic relationship. It is a covering--- like an authority. I submitted to it even though it was ugly, hot, scratchy and generally unpleasant to wear. This is nothing new. It's been worn on and off since I was 10.
The Pali Lookout is a childhood favorite. On the drive up, I recall a canopy of trees which symbolizes the protection of God on my journey. It is cool, refreshing and full of fruit. I recognize that the journey will be met by both the deep pain of loss; a loss as severe as the one ushered in by King Kamehameha toward his enemies. The towering Ko'olau mountains represent the large-scale, difficult and virtually un-passable mountains to climb and cross; just as it is in this toxic relationship; and as it can be in life itself. But in contrast, I anticipate an expansion of beauty and freedom in the future, like the land and ocean that stretch out into the distance below the lookout.
The wind is the physical, emotional and mental struggle of holding on or letting go. Despite the struggle, I reach the edge.
The playful memories take place around the edge of the Look Out and the entrance to the Old Pali Road. These places spark mystery and legend, and a slight bit of fear as does the steep drop from the cliffs.
The structure of the Pali Lookout is secure as is my relationship with Christ, and it is a vantage point at which I can view my life with all it's depth and layers of character. Christ is my Rock, as the picture of my life reveals its beautifully messy art.
The scarf is the relationship. The harder I try to keep it on the more it scratches me. I finally choose to take it off. I hold it a moment to let it beat violently against me, struggling against the wind. It flaps wildly around. But then I let go and my emotional resistance with it is carried away. I am free from the Black Woolen Scarf.
I realized after I wrote this that the Ko'olau mountain range is quite small in comparison to other mountain ranges on the planet. When standing next to it, it seems daunting; but when looked at from heaven's vantage point, it's height is no more than a groove in the grain of a plank of wood. THIS is the size of my problem as God sees it. He is my canopy, as well as the concrete Look Out beneath my feet. My solid rock.
