Biography

Bearer of the
Standard of the Lightweaver
“Write something, Sterling, so we’ll be remembered after the Stormcatcher calls us to serve him,” jewel told me. Since arguing with jewel rarely works out, here it goes.

Obviously I was hatched and raised, but I can’t remember where or by whom. The first words I remember saying were, “Beastly hot here,” though I knew it was the Shifting expanse-- my own identity was a mystery. I had a small knapsack with a few trinkets and some insects inside -- nothing that gave any clue where I came from or who I was.

All I could do was keep moving, catch insects, and pick up bits of debris --- parchments, chess pieces, leather that had seen better days, twigs, scraps of cloth, tree sap -- to stash in my knapsack.

I don’t know how long I wandered.

At last, The Stormcatcher smiled upon me.

At the end of a long day, I stumbled on a pretty girl crying as though her heart would break amongst a half-built lair. I pulled a scrap of red linen from my knapsack.

“Hello.” I offered the cloth.

She jumped and whispered, “Are you real?”

“I think so. Don’t be afraid. I won’t hurt you.” I extended the makeshift handkerchief again.

“I have to be afraid. I have tree sap to gather and cure. I have to find enough insects to keep my strength up. I can’t do it all alone.” She swiped one glossy wing across her face. “Why shouldn’t I be afraid? Why shouldn’t I cry? Keep your dusty cloth and be on your way. I’ll be fine. I have to be. The Stormcatcher kept me alive for some reason. I can’t let him down. Go on! What are you waiting for?”

The rapid transition from fear to anger was shocking. “Do you need help? You have no clan; neither do I, at least not one I can recall.”

She eyed me warily. “Well, I suppose we could give it a try. You look a bit on the scrawny side. But if you turn out to be more trouble than you’re worth, I’ll send you packing.”

I nodded, “Agreed. What shall I call you?”

Tears glistened in her eyes, “Whatever you like. Dragons hatched from abandoned eggs don’t have anyone to give them a name. What’s your name?’

“I haven’t a clue, about my name or anything else. But I will try not to be more trouble than I’m worth.” I ventured a small smile.

She smiled back. “Do you like moth wing cookies and Pauper tea? Maybe we can find names for each other.”
