- power concentrated in the ram's skull
- favors pearlcatchers as they most comfortably wear the skull
- the Judge's "resting" demeanor varies according to that of its host
- speaking changes with state of possession: royal "we" when the host and the Judge are in agreement; imperious "I" when the Judge overtakes an objecting host; soft-spoken half whispered speech lacking in pronouns of self-reference when the host is allowed to the forefront
- Previous host, Ampoule disguised himself and took the title of Judge in a bid to rescue his mother from imprisonment
- was possessed before he could pass judgement and grant freedom for her
- for a short time, wandered ghost-like through the Home, overseeing trials brought to his attention
- Ensio challenged previous host for ownership of the title; as a former merc versus an inexperienced youngster, he won easily
- breed changed self into a pearlcatcher to increase chances of possession
- sees his new role as a form of penance for failing his former comrades
- sought out this role when his attempt to become a sin-eater failed ("How can you possibly relieve others of their burdens, when you already carry your own prodigious weight?" - Treacle)
- only the Peacekeeper can reliably locate the Judge in its wanderings; they are not fond of each other
