RECKLESS EXPLORER • CAUGHT BETWEEN WORLDS
RECKLESS EXPLORER • CAUGHT BETWEEN WORLDS
nereid was born a bold, enthusiastic child of the sunbeam ruins. exploring forgotten caves, gathering materials and listening to tales told by older dragons were among her favourite pastimes. however, her foolish streak often led her into undesirable situations. her flight-mate asteria was often the friend who checked up on her and helped her out of those plights. upon nereid's move to the starfall isles, the two became fast friends. asteria's calm and wise nature were a perfect match for nereid's penchant for recklessness. between the mysterious starwood and the labyrinthine libraries of the observatory, the isles were a perfect fit for nereid's curiosity. and yet, there are some anomalies that should simply be left alone. deep in the starwood strand, nereid found herself exploring the darkest and strangest corners of this haunted shoreline. she had lost track of how long she had spent in there, the arcane energies bending time itself to their will. each new sight piqued her interest and she found she simply could not turn back. such is the nature of a place so saturated with arcane magic. up ahead, a dappled pink light was glowing faintly through the tress, so she bounded forward eagerly. a small portal was pulsating with energy and a faint buzzing sound, but she could not place where she had heard the sound before. with a slight turn of her head, she found that the portal was only visible from a specific angle. she expected to see the vast expanse of space within it, but there was nothing. not even a single sparkling star. although this did give her cause for concern, the opportunity for adventure was too good for nereid to pass up. she thrust herself forwards into the portal, grinning with delight. however the smile swiftly vanished from her face. a rush of roaring static met her ears causing her to cry out with instinctive terror. there was something within that static she knew - without really knowing - was terrible. she spun around to find the portal was closing, revealing a dim light behind some kind of odd, swirling clouds in the distance. with a sense of dull horror, it became clear that whatever was behind the light was causing the sinister static. she did not intend to stay and find out what it was. she hurled herself back through what was left of the portal while the static grew to a deafening scream. a burning sensation briefly passed over her wings, ensuring she would never forget this day for as long as she lived. no more weird portals. nereid still enjoys the thrills of exploration, but the grim reminders she received from that otherworldly place ensure she is (somewhat) more wary of the dangers that could befall her. haunted by this experience, she is constantly reminded by the pure, yet ghastly rip in reality that adorns her wings. only she can hear the faint hum of static, and only she can see the churning clouds every time she shuts her eyes, backlit by the horror behind them. |
