They hungered. In the night, the shadows whispered, tittering and laughing. They knew the aching feel in their body, the gaping hole that ached and ached and ached. They smiled, charming and magnificent, that glint in their eyes that always meant something more. Won’t you come closer? they asked, all honey and sweet and too sharp smiles. It’s lonely over here.
Once upon a time, they thought, looking around at this clan, at everything that’s changed, things were normal. They skirted around on the outskirts — never go in too far, they warned each other. Lest you be trapped, hampered in on all sides by them — nervous and bitter. Oh, how easily such a marvelous idea turned sour and hard.
They watched Stalked, soundless, and stealthy
As their clan turned to ruin.
Breathless laughter, high-pitched giggles. Oh, oh how this world turned and churned and burned.
All that work
Burned, burned, burned! Flames crackling in the sky, cackles of cheer and might.
Everything they’d put into this
Roaring and boring and— Gone. Still gone. Something was wrong.
And now
Missing. A hole, an ache, a craving and yearning and longing.
All they had was nothing.
Silence. Silent.
When did it all go wrong?
In the night
Once upon a time…
They hungered.

They’re friendly and kind, jolly and happy. They’re the kind of dragons everyone wants to know. They fill their days with laughter and jokes, worrying about trivial things such as clothing or looks. They’re always willing to lend a helping hand, to greet each other with smiles and kind words. They’re the oblivious. They’re seen as misfits and outcasts. The dragons no one wanted around. They’re the ones with nowhere left to go, with no one left to care. They’re the ones who sneak in the night, who hide behind layers of lies and masks of deceit. They’re the ones who string along their hapless victims, laughing as they watch them dance to their tune. They’re the monsters. They watch each other with narrowed eyes and nervous laughter, with knowing smiles and sly glances. They don’t reveal their cards. They don’t reveal their suspicions. Because sometimes it’s easier to pretend that your neighbor, your clanmate, isn’t a murderer. Because sometimes it’s amusing to pretend that you’re a completely normal dragon, with completely normal aspirations and fears. That, of course not. Of course you didn’t do it. What body? You don’t see a body. They’re the ones who call these woods their home.
