The Heartwood
.
This is an exalting lair.
.
. . .L o r e. . .
Deep among the brambles of the Wispwillow Grove a
tree like a small mountain reaches through the mist.
Said to have survived since the wars of the Third Age,
this tree reaches both above and below the fetid
swamps of the Shadowbinder's domain, with roots
that pierce the solid bedrock beneath and branches
that breathe the clean air above. Despite its size, its
isolation made the tree a poor home for a clan until,
driven to by a disastrous cave collapse in her former
home to explore farther north than most Shadow
dragons bothered or dared, a wandering Ridgeback
discovered a streak of rot near the tree's base. With
fire and dark miasma she and her clan hollowed out
the old wood and cleared a warren of caves and
tunnels through both the wood of the tree and the
stone beneath.
Today, the clan has grown to fill the tree. The
Ridgeback still rules in the hollow heart of the rotting
behemoth, now with a fine film of silver scales around
her eyes and muzzle. Her companions in that first
desperate mission have mostly gone to the
Shadowbinder, but new dragons have come to take
their place. Every year the clan delves higher into the
tree's trunk and deeper into its roots like parasites
slowly killing their host, aware of the damage they do
but unable to mitigate it completely. Shadow dragons
can never resist a play on words and so the clan has
come to call their home the Heart Tree, named for its
missing heartwood and the dragons who have
replaced it.
