They made it to the cliffs this time, Spades and Dormire and Sacred. Spades had seen the cliffs a few times in his life, but having grown up deeper in the Starwood Strand, he hadn’t found too much reason to come to the cliffside often.
Perhaps that was why he didn’t know how much weight the edge of one could support.
“Spades—” Dormire called, but it was too late.
Spades slipped with the crumbling bits of land dislodging themselves beneath him. Dormire caught his tail, but Spades slipped through her grip and into the water below.
He surfaced, coughing, disoriented but still paddling to stay afloat.
“Be careful of the edge, Spades!” Dormire called down to him.
Now you tell me, Spades didn’t say aloud.
It took effort, but Spades splashed around enough to take off and fly back up to the others, whereupon Spades and Dormire noticed they had lost their third companion.
“Where’s—where’s Sacred?” Spades grunted, out of breath.
They found her, mumbling, surrounded by a pile of loot.

Spades had repaired damaged books with his cousin before, though the books were never as badly water damaged as this. He spent the night variously dampening, separating, and drying the pages out, working by memory in a futile attempt to save his mother’s book.
He worked until early morning, but even then his task seemed far from done.
“Are you interested in hunting for loot today?” Dormire asked. By this point, Spades wasn’t even trying to hide what was going on with his mother’s book.

And Dormire was surprised, to say the least, to find a guardian with the same pink skeletal markings as Spades out wandering her land, but company had been becoming more frequent as of late.
This dragon looked at her with abject disgust, though—or perhaps fear. “Your blood’s haunted.”
“My blood?” Dormire almost chocked it up as more stories—but then she remembered yesterday, and Spades reading out of the book. “Spades said—”
“Spades?” the dragon asked. “You’ve seen a dragon named Spades?”
And somehow, something in Dormire’s blood grew wary. She responded, as if out of her own control, “I haven’t seen him in a while,” which, technically, was true.
And the other dragon sighed—but said, “Thank you anyway. And be careful.”
Before Dormire could ask if she needed a place to stay, the other dragon retreated deeper into the forest. When Dormire followed after her, she found that the other dragon was gone.

Worrying. They grabbed Sacred and left Athux with the hatchlings, but their search of the land turned up nothing. It was as if Spades had disappeared.
Close to dawn, they gave up searching. “He can’t have left,” Oneiroi muttered, back at the lair. “He’s left his mother’s—” She stopped midword. “Oh, no.”
“What?” Dormire asked.
“The book,” Oneiroi said. It was lying part way open where Spades had been working on it earlier, its pages open, dry, and crinkled. “I forgot about the book. What happened to it? I can’t even read the text…”
“What do you mean?” Sacred asked. She fluttered over the pages, saying, “I think I can still tell what it says… like it’s… like…”
She started mumbling, slowly, until finally, she said—
“Undeath can help me read it.”
And something icy flowed down Dormire’s veins. “Surely,” she said carefully, “if Sacred can read it, then she should take care of the book, yes?”
Oneiroi shot her a glare.
“You still need to summon your Undeath, don’t you?” And Dormire needed to figure out how to uncurse her blood. She pushed the book toward Sacred. “This might be the way to do it.”

“How’s the reading coming along?” Dormire asked.
The book looked oversized compared to Sacred. She was laying on pages bigger than her, like she’d been doing for most of the last day and a half, and seemed enraptured by the text.
“Sacred?” Dormire asked.
“Come check this out, Dormire,” Sacred said.
Dormire obligingly sat beside her and the book. Sacred then pointed to a less washed out section of the text.
“This passage,” she said, “is about necromancy.”
“Necromancy?” Dormire whispered.
“You seem agitated lately,” Sacred said, “and—and I know you’re doing so much for us already, giving us a place to stay, but if you want to get your mind off it… how do you feel about giving this a try?”

“That does sound nice,” the tundra said.
“So you’ll join us?”

END OF DAY 12.

These impish spectres appear at the edges of one's vision when the nights are darkest. It remains unknown if they truly exist, or if they are a figment of the mind.
2750
THE CLAN rolls a ten, gaining a new wildclaw companion.
Dragons just appeared in this lair, didn’t they? Oneiroi took one look at the new wildclaw sitting next to Sacred and Aili and didn’t even need to ask who had brought her home.
“Dormire,” Oneiroi murmured.

THE CLAN rolls a ten, triggering Event 10: Um, Oops Haha.
Oneiroi left quickly after meeting Cirrostratus that morning, and soon after, Athux left, as he said, to “get a sense of the surrounding area for future loot hunts.”
And Dormire was keeping Dodger, Cirrostratus, and Aili busy with the promise of food, giving Sacred the perfect opportunity to read the book by herself today.
Sacred sighed dreamily.
Ah, the book.
The very, very cursed book.
Sacred loses a life!

“Did you make this?” Dormire asked. “It’s wonderful, Athux.”
“Thank you. But about the next area—”
“Oh, no,” Dormire said. “That area’s off limits.”
Athux laughed, but it was a weary sound. “Then what about—”
Oneiroi hummed a sharp sound. “That area’s off limits as well.”
“Okay,” Athux droned, “then where do you suggest we look for loot next?”
Dormire perked up. “Did you do any scouting by the cliffs?”

Athux took Aili and Cirrostratus to the cliffs, but the cliffs seemed empty of loot today. Athux noticed the off limits areas perhaps with too much interest. “Check the perimeter again,” Athux said.
“And what about you?” Cirrostratus asked.
“I want to check something further in.” They left, and Athux hopped toward the trees. He spotted fallen branches—as if something large had brushed against them—and fell back, wondering about it.
Luckily, near the tracks Athux ran into some agreeable loot.
