I believe the whole things started with Undel meeting Akiri and the former said they wanted to start a dragon site.
Some time later Xhaztol and Thrage came in and the Alpha was created. This was shown on Flight Rising's Youtube to allow everyone to get an idea of what the site was all about.
The Beta was then done and proved successful, which then lead to the Kickstarter. The site was successfully funded (by A LOT) and, through the hard work of the staff and artists that dedicate their time to the site, we have the Flight Rising you are in right now.

A group of friends met on WoW and decided to make their own dragon game. Undel was already a published artist (she has how to draw dragon books). They set up a kickstarter after registering Stormlight Workshop. It premiered as a beta, then launched as the actual Flight Rising not long afterward.

I pinged Xhaztol once and nothing happened so I don't think so
