Had a gander at the retired familiars out of curiosity and, obviously I know that sprites were from a time of fewer users and so are much more expensive, but I didn't realise how large the gap actually was. Specifically, I mean that the nature sprite and the sunbeam soldier were only a month apart, but the nature sprite is like 2800g rn while the soldier is only about 400g.
All I'm wondering is.... what happened? Did the site grow exponentially during the anniversary? Did people start buying more familiars during festivals? Did the mechanics change? Or is it just artificial scarcity because the sprites are so infamously coveted?

A year apart actually, the bears were the next set after the sprites.

Not entirely sure, as I'm a newer player, however from what I can gather partially why the sprites are so expensive is probably out of high demand, lol. It's easier to price them for so high when there's very few and high demand.

I remember reading another post about this some time back, and one of the main reasons attributed to it, especially with the Light Sprite, is that the site was still in it's infancy and, naturally, had issues, glitches, etc. As a result, it wasn't always possible to actually get the sprites back then.
Another issue is that people at the time didn't realise that the Sprites were gonna be retired afterwards, so the vast majority of people didn't buy several extras to sell at a later point like many people do now, they just bought one or two.
Combine those with other factors, such as the massive growth of the userbase exponentially increasing demand and players from the Sprite year no longer playing or being banned which leads to their sprites being effectively removed from circulation, and that at least partially explains why the Sprites are so expensive.

*Looks at lair* Ah yes. Organised chaos.

That actually answers all my questions and makes me feel a bit dumb; I didn't realise the bears came first whoops. I guess since they retired the acolytes I assumed they must've come after the sprites, but if they were an extra year apart that'd give the site time to grow enough to make the sprites extra scarce by the time they rolled around.

Open reg happened close behind the close of FR's first year, it was a more stable site, less demand because there's less prestige than the First set of familiars.
Functionally they're all identical and you can unlock them to the Awakened state like any other, but if you want the png in the Familiar spot on a dragon, gotta pay the big bucks for the rarity. Honestly, linking them in the bio works just as well, and you can headcanon they have a sprite ally just as easy as headcanoning their career.

The bears were a huge monkey paw to the very loud part of the community that hated anything retiring. For multiple years the bears were Baldwin fodder because they were so numerous and dropped from NotN boxes. They thankfully corrected that error, but the backlog of dozens of bears means those things will never be in the same realm as the other early familiar sets
