I think that the best solution to use an 'artist's choice' method. I've seen it used a lot in other hobbies where art services are offered!

Essentially, take 'bids' for the slots but have fixed pricing - have users post their desired orders within a specified time frame (3 days or so) with the understanding that you are going to pick which ones you want to do, so posting isn't a guarantee that they get a slot. At the end of that time period, go through and choose which orders you will accept, and arrange payment with those people (and politely inform those who didn't make it that they can be on a pinglist and try again next time).

This way you get to pick the orders that are most interesting/rewarding for you to draw, and you aren't excluding people who have more limited budgets and can't fight in a bid war for your art. It's a win-win for both parties!

@TheGermanTaco I'm bad at bidding because I often don't have a lot on me (given what other people on FR can offer there are some rich people here) and I'm generally uncomfortable in such a competing environment, so I prefer 1st come 1st serve since I either get it or I don't you know? I know 'artist's choice' is pretty popular, like people post their characters and their offers with the understanding it's up to you to pick based on your preference of characters and orders~

Whatever you're most comfortable with doing, you know I'll be there trying to steal all your art~

Personally I like the method where people post orders and the artist chooses based on which one interests them most or something along those lines, kind of like rembrandt's art shop over here for reference. I believe it's called the "artist's choice" method, judging from what other people in this thread have been saying. I'm more or less uncomfortable with bidding because I know I can't fight all those rich people and I'm bad at keeping up with something on a deadline. But when in doubt, 1st come 1st serve is always a classic choice.

I agree with the majority of the feedback thus far: I think that artist's choice sounds most fair to both you and your commissioners. I'm rather fond of the first come, first serve style, as well, but it's your time and effort that winds up going into the art, so I don't think anyone could fault you for choosing not to do that if you don't want to.

I agree with the artist choice, it really is the most fair and helps keep you from taking comish you really just wouldn't want to do ^^
