When Mid was but a young hatchling, green forests were all he knew. He loved to hide in the shadows of the trees, hidden by his grey hide and dark stripes, and watch the lives of other animals go on around him. His small size and preference to run rather than fly made it easier for him to get around in the closely-growing trees. As he grew up, he quickly made a name for himself as the Night Tiger, the mysterious defender of the forest who was never seen but could always turn away all intruders. Then, one day, Mid met the one intruder he could not defeat -- humans. They came with their large, loud, dirty machines and tore down the forest. In its place they built a towering city of steel and cement, and all Mid could do was watch as his beautiful green home was replaced by grey cinderblock. He watched as deer and squirrel and bear fled from the forest and as birds flocked away from the treetops. He watched as the animals he worked so hard to protect were crushed under the human machines. Still, Mid refused to leave. This was where his home stood, and this was where he would stay until the end of his days. One day he came across the skeletons of some unfortunate birds that were unable to escape in time, their bodies long since rotted away; he kept their skulls and wore them as a necklace to remind himself of what he had lost. From then on, he found a new purpose: he lurked in the shadows of the concrete jungle, always on the lookout for any animals that might have gotten trapped inside, and helped them escape. And always, he longed for days long past, when he was surrounded by trees rather than skyscrapers, when the shadows were comforting rather than ominous, when the sky was blue rather than grey. Such was the life of Mid, until one day he woke to find the grey city covered in pristine white. The white was snow, but Mid had never seen snow before -- all he knew was that it was clean, and fresh, and invigorating. And out of the white came something he had not seen in years and thought would never see again -- a dragon. Her name was Yukin, and she had come to see if the legends of a mysterious being in the city that defended the animals from humans were true. She convinced Mid to leave the city with her and relearn the wilderness, to live with her and her partner Sika in their forest. Mid said he would only do so if Yukin promised to keep any more animals from venturing into the city -- she agreed, and so they left. Now Mid is once again the protector of a forest -- Sika's forest, where he lives happily with his partners Yukin and Sika. He has reclaimed the name of Night Tiger and spends his days scouting for intruders or animals in need of help and defending his forest from invaders. Still, once in a while he clutches the birdskulls around his neck and remembers his birth forest, forever gone. |
