Bob grew up nearly identical in a family of Bobs. As a result, he always had dreams of rising to the top and making a new name for himself as a mage. However, he hated having to put in the hard work to do so, and spent his time looking for shortcuts instead. After some research, he found a pearlcatcher-specific spell that could trade his pearl for Phenomenal Cosmic Power. He was delighted, his ambitions suddenly within reach. Without questioning it, or thinking of the implications, he cast the spell, and, as promised, his pearl disintegrated and was replaced with a shining runestone. In the same moment, all of his memories from before the spell vanished too, replaced with the knowledge of hundreds of spells. He pieced together what had happened from his notes, immediately regretted what he'd done, and tried to find his way home. Not knowing the name of his clan, its location, or even what his family looked like, he didn't have much luck. Instead he drifted from clan to clan, putting his new abilities to good use and gaining a reputation as some sort of wandering god. (One of his sisters did stumble across him and ask him for some help.
