This is probably a concept that's already been introduced before, heh. Figured I should give it a go none the less! Peacocks!
Since it's just a rough idea, the artwork is a little sloppy and I only bothered to do one side, since it's pretty detailed as a concept! I ended up trying out different colour combos, most of which I colour-picked from scries of butterfly.
It'd look particularly lovely on feathered dragons, like coatls, sds and imps!
What do you guys think?
Original concept, using Emerald:

Some other colours:

Okay! People have been asking a lot about how this would work on dragons with more leathery wings, so I went ahead and plotted out some basic blobs for where the pattern could be placed on them. It was fun to expand on this as a concept, even if it's super rough. c:
I would imagine that it wouldn't NEED to have a feathery texture, since as a concept, I think it's more about the dramatic pattern than than anything else.
(These aren't any particular FR colours, I just picked whatever colours stood out.)

Oooooh! Yes please! This could look so cool as an actual gene! :D

Yes yes yes all of my yes this would be amazing!

YES.
I would definitely get several dragons with this if it existed.

A ladybug secondary. It would add a chitin-like shine to the wings and big dark spots (I'm thinking black with around 70% opacity so it would still be slightly lighter than the line art). The very dark colors like obsidian would have white spots instead. And the special two-toned colors like lapis, copper, metal, etc can have spots in their respective second tone (or they could still have black spots, that works too).

Examples in cherry, sunshine, obsidian and lapis.

I like this! We have some spotted/splotchy genes but they're all really busy; none of them are as simple and straightforward as this one. There's definitely an empty spot (heh) in the gene pool that something like this could fill. You could easily get a matching primary and/or tert out of this concept, too.

I'm not an artist, so I can't exactly make this on a dragon, but could you consider a secondary gene called discus? It would be based off of this freshwater fish.

The gene would look mainly like this fish's fins, meaning that it would have rippling lines at the base, then taper off and have the edges with spots. I think it would look magnificent with Freckle, Ripple, Tiger, and other genes.

I would like something like this^^

Perhaps a moon related gene?

so, we already have a butterfly gene, but I think a dragonfly one would be neat too :0
it would be translucent, and tinted with the secondary color.

I love it! It would look perfect on Fae dragons, given how small they are!

I was thinking about a sec gene kinda equivalent to Petals. I would call it Mosaic. Maybe it could work with the color-system like Petals or Butterfly do, if you know what I mean?
Just gonna leave this here

(Well, probably not that colorful though)

My ideal secondary gene would probably be marble/swirl, such as in the marbled jester familar. It just seems so pretty and would have some oppurtunities for some interesting colors to be thrown in!

It would great a gene to be paired with a primary gene that looks similar! And here's a marbled tabby cat as another example.
