I've already seen people saying they won't be able to get the familiar since it will be locked behind a paywall. I think it would work better if it was available for gems instead of USD.
Instead, you could have it so any gem purchases made with IRL currency have a set amount of the money donated.
(I will also note, if it stays as paywall, I have no issue buying it + trading it in exchange for 250g, though I won't be able to do it for every single person)

I can't afford groceries right now. There's no way I can afford to buy one. I get it's a fundraiser. I get why it matters.

Big agree that making the only access to this through a paywall and no other way feels really bad. I totally appreciate its for charity, but it should have been a set amount of money sent over from gem purchases during the period that its active. It feels super FOMO to me since it will be less accessible to players (not everyone can spend USD, or maybe players may be offline during the event), its almost giving me the same vibe as missing out on the kickstarters lol (except obviously there is a lot more players now so it will be more common ofc), but as a collector its definitely... not a great feeling, and knowing they are perma retiring makes me want at least one copy, which I have plenty of gems to do, but alas...
Giving some of the gem proceeds is my ideal solution but I would feel better about this if we got one in galore and then for people that wanted more than one copy they could buy them.
That, or as another thread suggested, to not retire them at all but keep them USD (so people could get them when they are more financially able, or will be online).
But as a retiring item, only for USD (regardless of if people have already spent USD on gems, and could give that money to charity) gets a bit of a wince from me.

My currency isn't dollars, and I don't really like online transactions, but I'd hate missing out on such a cool familiar. What if something comes out and they're corrupt? A lot less bad for Flight Rising and it's community if that was only an optional fundraising item and not The Premium Currency!

I think they either need to change it to gems with a portion of gem sales over a period of time going to the charity or make the familiar permanent, if its permanent it'll trickle in for in game currency and people can just buy it when they have money. Its one familiar, so I think making it so any and all proceeds go to the charity just forever shouldn't really hurt, since they weren't intending to make anything from it anyway as is.
Given their update in other threads, the way they’ve done it makes sense, I’d still prefer one of these laid out above as the consumer but understand now it probably won’t be possible. Non-USD will have the issues they laid out and having them open forever will probably be hard logistically. I’ll just make sure to buy a handful of them to help out buddies who might not be able to buy them!
