How is exalting sad, exactly? I don't really understand that viewpoint.
TOPIC | make exalting less sad
@ProbablySkeletor A ton of people use exalting in place of dragons dying, I assume is a huge part of it. And then also the element of "Well, now no one can ever have that dragon ever again, it's permanently and completely banned from having children or fighting in the coliseum or getting dressed or anything". Those are some of the sentiments I've seen expressed a lot. Also a lot of people get extremely attached to their pixel dragons. Hopefully that helps you understand!
As for me, I think it's sort of sad when you find a dragon you want, specifically of a unique ID or unique coloration, that's been exalted. Because maybe you would've even paid good dragon money for it, but now you can't have it. But having someone else able to interact with that dragon or something through some means? That doesn't... really help me there.
I guess it's also slightly sad that it's gone forever, with no chance to come back (if the person can't or doesn't unexalt it in time), and I understand permanence of such a thing can sometimes be sort of hard.
While a method to play with or interact with these dragons could be kind of neat, as other people have said, exalting serves to remove dragon data, and this would be unnecessarily keeping it around. I think it'd be cool to see a list of all the dragons I've exalted, but also like... I don't need it. If I want to keep a list, I'll keep my own list. Flight Rising doesn't need the bulk of a feature like that.
And it basically says "Hey, exalters are better than non-exalters, because they get bonus stuff to do because they exalt dragons." And I don't ever approve of that message. Exalting is and always will be a choice. Not everyone likes exalting. Some people love it. Trying to force people into exalting by locking some amount of features behind having exalted dragons is a slap in the face to those who don't want to exalt.
The one bit I can support is maybe a sort of Flight Pantheon. While there's the pedestals for exalted dragons now (which I love a lot), it might be neat if you could keep like, ten exalted dragons on a special Pantheon background suitable for your (current) flight. Maybe you could bookmark specific dragons in here for aesthetic reasons, or maybe it only shows your ten most recent exalts. Either way could be cool.

Literally the only thing that could be done to make exalting "less sad" for me would be giving me more money for every dragon I exalted. And the impact that would have on the site would be terrible.
Exalting isn't sad if you go by site lore. People that think so are essentially creating a problem by viewing exalting as "killing" even though it isn't.

I think it's sad because it's permanent. I undid an exalt once; what a relief. But I don't really think there is a way to make it less sad unless they make all exalted dragons able to be recovered at all times, not just progens; keeping a 90-day cooldown though.
EDIT: It's also sad because I don't get to see a list or collection of all the dragons I personally exalted, a list like that would be pretty useful, even if it were an option in Dragon Search.

Yeah; I think my main issue with this suggestion is that it seems to be looking for a sitewide solution to a user-created problem. Going by site standards, exaltation is already great: lore-wise, it's an honor; exalted dragons are given a fancy pillar with recently updated shiny new unique-to-flight artwork (where we previously had a pretty boring same-for-everyone pillar) and remain accessible on the site; the user gets a big ol' cash reward for exalting; there were previously achievements for exalting dragons, and I imagine when the site revamp is complete and achievements can come back, they'll exist again…
It's one of those things where no matter what the site does to encourage exalting = good, some people are always going to view exaltation as something sad or unwanted because it removes the dragons from the game— but it's also a fundamental game mechanic and has been what FR revolved around from the beginning. I think at a certain point the site has to just shrug and let people have their sad headcanons, because those are always going to exist. There's no point in fighting an unwinnable battle.
And while it does remove dragons from the game, before the Hibernal Den existed it was essentially my Hibernal Den because the exalted dragons remain attached to your account— the only drawback being no bio/no apparel/no skins, which wasn't a huge drawback until the apparel catalogue started to be big enough that I really wanted to dress my dragons. Whenever I exalt dragons, I exalt them to the Windsinger, and since the pedestal looks like somewhere they would rest after playing with the kites in the sky and stuff, I like to think of it as they are sent to serve their deity and they do stuff like carry messages and little jobs, then get to play and say hi to noodledad.

This is what headcanons are for. All of the 27059 dragons I have exalted thus far are petting Icewarden's colony of cats. This is the opposite of sad.
More seriously, part of the purpose of exalting is to remove data. I do think exalting could be a little more fun, like the aforementioned exalt shop idea, but otherwise, going off to serve one of the gods is a high honor. It's the dragons who weren't chosen for this (the ones in our lair being pretty) that's more sad, canonically speaking.

I don’t know how to figure out how this would work. Exaltation gets rid of data. I agree it’s sad. It doesn’t help when people say that it’s canonically the highest honor. Because it’s still sad to see them sitting on a pillar doing nothing. I wish they would be reading or something, but that would be horrible to make extra poses and everything, so I don’t think it’s possible.

Many people, like me, don’t like exalting because they are gone forever. Yes, you can breed that pattern, but how often will you see a XXX G1 breedchanged dragon? (using that as an example, of course.). Same thing for people who have breeding projects. You want to make an awesome Pearl/Pearl/Moon with Iridescent/Shimmer/Runes, but let’s pretend all the dragons that you would use are exalted... now you have to use a huge range and it takes forever.
So basically, it’s the fact that they are gone, and maybe they really liked it, but once somebody bought it, they exalted it.

I agree that it's sad, but from the angle of "I don't want this in my lair anymore, but since it's not selling on the AH, it needs to be exalted."
Lore does try to soften the blow, but I do feel a lot of guilt doing it. I'm not sure if that's a site issue so much as being very emotionally attached to any dragon I have, no matter why I have it.
I like JonSnOwO's perspective. Imagining something more pleasant eases the process.
I'm not sure how much detail is given about exaltation, but filling it with writing is likely a nicer solution in the meantime.
