support! i think variants should be passed down randomly through breeding and then a 50kt scroll allows you to change the variant of a gene one time per scroll
edited to add “randomly” bc i like the idea of many possible surprises :)
edited again to change g to kt as i saw other people suggesting a Change Variant scroll to be a good treasure sink

Ooo I'd love this idea!
Support <3 Hopefully, the FR team atleast consider this idea

Support, I wonder how it would be implemented but the possibilities look fun. Tbh it would renew the joy of hatching dragons, I've been breeding them very sparsely lately.
I prefer option #3 for breeding, even though I guess it would be a major headache for hatcheries trying to get a specific dragon. But with ways to control it, like the variation scroll, I think it would be manageable.
The thing I'd like to see the most is tert genes like flecks work only for the body or wings area.

every once in a while i come back to this thread just to stare at all the mock ups and sigh wistfully. scroll of variance my beloved.
it would probably be better off being single-use(if you decide you want a different variant/og version you have to buy another scroll to use, ect), and as tempted as i am to say i like how fun option 1 sounds for breeding mechanics, i think option 2 would likely be better in the long run + make more sense with how most other scrolls like it already work.

I love this idea so much and I really hope it's the next big feature they work on
Many tertiaries are harder to work with than they need to be because the art is drawn to cover many parts of the body, having variants that are more localized would be much easier to work with. I don't think that variants should be significant differences in the art, stuff like the alternate keel feels like it should be a new gene.
Additionally, with variants in mind new genes could be created with multiple versions, I'm sure the team spends a lot of time trying out different iterations of new genes before deciding which one to actually use, variants being a thing could let them realize multiple ideas instead of having to commit to just one.
Obviously the extra time spent drawing all the variants would probably outweigh the shorter time spent deciding on a set of variants rather than a singular final one (assuming that time actually would be shorter), but I wouldn't mind a slower rate of gene releases if it meant more customization.
How I imagine variants should work
Breeding: Getting a random variant would be fun, I quite enjoy a bit of randomness as long as things aren't locked behind it.
Choosing variant: This could be simply a cheap treasure scroll like the Remove Gene Scrolls, just a one time use to choose a new variant. Applying a new gene should give the same choice for the specific variant.
If the cost of changing isn't that high I don't think people would take issue with having to fix wrong variants when breeding and buying dragons.
As for concerns of people being demanding about new variants, we have dedicated suggestion threads for genes, apparel and familiars, just make one for variants and redirect any new threads people make.

I don't know if I ever actually commented on this, or if I just stare longingly every now and then at what could be. I would love this SO MUCH. This concept lives rent free in my head. I need variant colors SO BADLY. Like how Radioactive's 1st accent is that bright pinkish-purple (Fade/Skink) and how the second accent is that cyan color? (and maybe that darker teal, I don't know.) I would pay BIG BUCKS to switch the accent color on some genes. I'm almost certain this has been proposed before so I'm sorry, and I'm also sorry for some of the wackest mockups known to man.
Sometimes, I want to use a gene on my dragon, but for SOME REASON it gets the weirdest accent. Like Wisteria being green. Why are you green. Just be blue. Look how easy it is to be blue!
Example One: Steel Skink with default accent VS Steel Skink with Orange accent (from Stitched)

I love this idea. Sounds like it would be some work, but it would satiate a lot of issues I have with scrying without having to make completely new genes for something we already have similar.
Support!

We now have a gene with variations that depend on the dragon's breed and pose, maybe we could have a variant that inverts this?

Bringing this back on account of SS Cherub/Seraph. I don't like Cherub, but I'd love it if it could look like it does on the new breed with the feathers on Seraph (the f PC at least kinda has this going on right now) and wings on the shoulders and legs...

I am obsessed with this idea haha especially since Auraboa genes came out
