I am not sure we need entire new mechanic for "alter gene" but what could be done within existing system and is good - add more variations as new gene.
And while some mentioned genes are really different from old and requair as many work as any new gen; alot of cool variants are simple recolors!
Add more genes that are recolors of old. It is mutch faster and easier to create. It make happy alot of players who "like old but want a bit diffirence"
Let's say very popular Fla/Fla!
Instead of make dramma with "fixing reverted colors on obey" simply add new gene with reverted colors for each breed!
Actually I'd like some other breeds has "reverted manes" as well as some obeys hase "unreverted"
Recoloring works good with all cnon'monochrome genes and could be done easy with their coloring engine.

Because we're so limited on Ancients their genes really need to be able to pull their weight on showcasing them.
This scry bane is Obs/gold/gold, with Marble/Toxin/Fans. But some kind of Fans version where it uses an accent color or serious shine as it is a gem gene and a super plain one for a gem gene at that would be very welcome. Something to add some extra character, like the color change mentioned or rips or tears in the membrane.
The same would probably apply for Gaolers too, though their fans don't make much sense to me, they're so wooly, I don't get making them look like fish.

This is a really cool idea! I'd love to see this in FR's future as this seems like a BIG project to work on. Especially with the coding and stuff.
I like the idea that it can be passed down when breeding, probably option 1 mixed with 3. It would have similar mechanics that genes have now; if bred with common and rare genes, its a 75% chance you will get a common gene, and additionally (depending on the gene, if it's common and uncommon, etc.), you would have a whatever percent chance that the gene will be passed down to the offspring. I hope that makes sense
The gene scroll def makes sense, I'm just wondering if it would be a gem scroll (it would make sense since it would vary your dragon's appearance), but also I like the option where you could lock variant genes for those who don't want variants passed down. I would guess that would be a treasure scroll, so anyone could access it.
I'd also love to see a variation of the Skink/Spinner genes, like with more of the lines or dots or a hue change (if I have time, I'll post what I mean :P )
(also following this thread, I want to see all of the suggestions and arguments )
edit: maybe variations could be player-submitted, kind of like skins? They would probably be coloured in greyscale and have an example alongside it, then reviewed by an FR member and finally have the FR colours overlayed on top of them. I hope this makes sense. This would save a lot of time for the FR team, but could also have the players more involved.
Edit Edit: these would look cool as variants - they're subtle, except for the crackle.

@Amut
Kind of agree with you - for a gem gene that is very little. I made it so that it has a gradient change

Meriii Oh whoa! That is fantastic. That particular bane actually has Squiggle as her tert, because it looks a bit more like something. But in general ancient genes are a little bit lacking in the shine and flash department.
I also notice there's a ragged bit to the frill at the top of the neck, apparently that's always been there (never noticed it before), but with a gradient, it's much more noticeable. It's a nice tiny texture touch that I think could work really well. Gradient, texture, markings. Frills really is an extremely plain gem gene and it could stand to be a bit more flashy for it's cost. It's underbelly, basically.

Fully support! When clown was first introduced, I gene'd my first Nocturne (Ventus in my lair) as I loved the dark points. Unfortunately it was reversed soon after and I hated how the light clown looked, so I literally bought a skin to bring back the reverse clown on her. Would be nice to have the option of the old genes when they’re changed, even as a legacy version.

What about fireflies, but with no fireflies, instead extra dots?
