I wana summarise a bit my opinion about redrawing genes and how this SHOULD be to not harm existing dragon's owners:
- most likeli if we got "Silhouette gene scroll" to swap betwin it's variations.
If it is imposible then
- Keep gens unchanged (expect of REAL bugs like absent color at one sprite among all colors breeds and sexes or absent of img at all)
- if we can not be saved from eventual redrawing genes then make pole before changing (loudly announced on main page! not somewhere deeply in "devs discussions" where most people even has no idea to search)
- redrawing genes without any warning just after devs reading some posts on forums is worst desicion for me. And this should not happens again!
"Do not fix something that isn't brockem" and if some gene do not looks brocken than devs just should accept this as final variant and make brand new gen if wana new look for existing gene.
Another thing (if devs can not test new gen for mistakes by theiselves) make "prerelise period"
During this gens availble in scry but do not availble "change scrols" thus no one become a victim when their dragon that they scrol (for alot ** currency!) suddenly "turnes into pumpkin"
And when they fis all bugs that players send in report or devs decide change something by themselves during this period only afterthat gene become relised. And do not changed majority after that! (only small reall bugs that left (like tottal absent of img or differ that can not be counted as "breed specific" )
Please feel free ad this in head if you wish, but I think it is better if you rewright it more correct with you words. I think I've done gramar and syntax mistakes.

This suggestion is not about changing existing genes, it’s about adding variations of existing genes. The original gene will remain unchanged. When applying a gene to a dragon the player would be able to choose between any added variations (or stick with the classic original version of the gene. If a dragon already has the classic gene and new variations are added the dragon would keep the classic appearance. Players could choose to change the classic gene to a variant by applying a scroll of variance- this scroll would be a relatively inexpensive scroll. The scroll of variance would allow a player to change a dragon born with a gene that may not be the variance the player wants and allow them to change it to a desired variance without having to regene a dragon

I like these suggestions every time they come around, gene "alteration" scrolls could be a rather simple way for staff to make a new treasure sink, and realistically it would be pretty low effort. The one that would be the highest effort that i've seen suggested would be iri/shim alternative versions, because (if i'm remembering correctly) those are still done entirely by hand, so any new variants would also need to be done by hand for each color on each breed and pose.
However, for other genes, it (theoretically) wouldn't be nearly as much effort. I feel like I recall seeing suggestions a long while back about things like python/morph getting "inverted" color versions that could drop from the coli during NotN- the parts that are dark now use the pale color, and the parts that are pale now would use the dark color. A gene alteration scroll would be a really smart way to implement something like that- it'd be a pretty great treasure sink.
As for things like breeding, I would prefer that alternative genes have no impact on a dragon's actual genes and breeding. I think it would be best if these alternate genes were a purely cosmetic thing, like eternal youth scrolls or pose change scrolls.
Personally, I think i'd prefer them being one-time use items so they don't make a toggle, and you'd have to purchase another one if you wanted to switch back to the original art. I can understand that might be an unpopular suggestion for this topic though, and it's not like it would bother me if there was a toggle lol.
It could also be interesting to me if there was a treasure scroll for treasure genes, and a gem scroll for gem genes, but that could cause problems for baldwin/coli obtained genes in terms of how to get the respective variant scrolls. I'm not sure if they should then also have their own scrolls, or maybe they'd just get put under the gem scroll? It could be more confusion than it's worth, so maybe better to keep it as just one item for all genes.

spacedaydreamer I think a single variance scroll for all genes would be best, there is enough confusion with the modern vs ancient parallel genes so having different variance scrolls for different methods of obtaining genes (treasure, gem, baldwin, swipp, coliseum) would be just as confusing
I personally feel for breeding if a dragon has a variance applied then the offspring would inherit that variant or the other parent's gene. So if a player bred a dragon with Classic Alloy and Luster Alloy, the offspring would be either Classic or Luster, if a Classic Alloy Dragon was another Classic Alloy the offspring would all be Classic Alloy, If two Luster Alloys were bred together the offspring would be all Luster Alloys... I feel this would be less confusing than breeding two Luster Alloys and ending up with Classic Alloy offspring or breeding two Classic Alloy offspring and ending up with a Luster Alloy offspring

DragonSage yeah, even as I was writing up that part I was realizing just how complicated multiple scrolls could be lol. Not to mention, it would be really frustrating if you went to get a scroll for a gene, and realized later that you picked up the wrong version by mistake. At most, maybe a split between primary/secondary/tertiary could be considered, but even that feels kinda unnecessary.
And that's fair! My thinking was for if you can't get variant genes through breeding at all, then people would understand "even if I have Variant Y, I will still get the classic gene", but visually it would be odd.
I suppose in the end I wouldn't mind however they implemented it, but I would at least prefer there being no random chance of a variant showing up if you bred two classics. Like you say, it could get confusing, and it could also remove some of the effectiveness of the scrolls as a treasure sink.

i want the other keel & jupiter/saturn ;_; they feel a bit too busy for my taste rn

Personally, I think those "Alternate Keel" suggestions would work better as their own unique genes, since they're quite different from the original in ways the other Alternate gene suggestions are not. Some of the Alternate Keels look more like Alternate Scales anyway.
Overall, I think this would be a decent solution for when there's art errors that people have gotten attached too. I know there's a lot of people dreaded the day when the devs get around to Iri/Shim because no matter what happens, there's going to be disappointed users. It'd be a massive amount of work for the artist(s) to repaint every single colour with both variants, but I don't think there's any way to really satisfy everyone.

That's the thing though. The artist's aren't repainting every gene by hand. They do it through a program that autofills the colors.
Once the gene is drawn and set in its overlays, the program does the actual coloring.
The ONLY genes that this cannot work for is Iri/Shim as they are because that geneset was made and colored by hand before the auto-coloring program was created. But if the plan is to make reg Iri/Shim look like Obelisk iri/shim then the original files for reg iri/shim will remain (for all except the Obs, which is honestly acceptable for me).

I was specifically talking about Iri/Shim there :V Sorry for any confusion.

I like this and support the idea . I miss old irishim

I know this has been suggested already. But really. I'd like Thylacine enough to actually use it if it was like this:

Orca
Instead of this:

Ice
If it's just a removable layer, it would be such a treat to get Orca consistency across the gene.
