Overview
Massive dragons from the Emberglow Hearth region, their aimless burrowings lead them far from their birthland. Most active during dusk and dawn.
(edit note: Another locale they can originate from is Greatwyrm's Breach)
Physical
Gaerds are very large dragons with short limbs and a long, serpentine body. Their wings are very reduced, incapable of flight. They have a tough ribbed armoring on their back and head. Running down their sides all the way to the tail are little nubs that the dragon can move a little, and they can accurately sense vibrations in solids or liquids. They usually lay on their bellies, but when rearing up they lean on their muscular tails.
Gaerds are expertly skilled at swimming and burrowing, whether it is through lava, earth or water. Their preferred method of hunting is ambushing prey from below or camouflaging themselves and waiting for it to wander into their grasp.
----
Potential differences between females and males. The female is the 'default' of the species, and the males are a lot smaller and sharper in their shapes.
Social
Gaerds are rather sociable, talking with other members of their species with low rumbling and growling. They gather up into piles and sleep in the sunlight, sensing each others' moods through the constant tremors. They are rather vague when talking to other species, leaving out most of the important details.
Gaerds are naturally lazy, but pick up new skills quickly. Their enthusiasm is short-lived, and they usually give up at the first sign of difficulty.
Lair
Natural lair is a simple loop where the dragon can turn around without too much trouble. In mixed-species clans they burrow an u-shaped corridor into the shared lair.
Combat
Gaerds prefer to ram with their armored head, crush small enemies with their bodies and tear larger ones with their teeth. If overwhelmed, they quickly burrow/dive away.
