Hi!
I want to run a RPG campaign!
It will be loosely based on the dungeon crawler Carl books- but if you haven’t read those, no problem! It will be very loosely based. It will also use heavily modified d&d 5e system. Never played before? Also not a problem. This probably won’t be much like dungeons and dragons you’re used to anyways.
TLDR? The story takes place on earth- which has been turned into a fathomless, wacky dungeon by aliens terraforming the planet and using its residents for entertainment television. Your characters will start out as human- with a chance to change their race when they pick their class on floor 3. If you make it to floor 20 you just might be able to save your planet, and reverse what the aliens have done. But the games are not rigged in your favor- in fact, they’re run by a broken AI that’s gone mad with power and is only leashed by a cruel interstellar oligarchy.
I have a ton of fun surprises in store. If your party has enough viewers you might just get sponsored! The party’s safehouse will appear on each floor, a base for you to customize to your liking! Sometimes you might be stopped after a fight to do an interview with some strange alien host. And don’t get me started on the crawler leaderboard- if you’re tough enough to make the top ten there will be a bounty on your head. There will be games, puzzles, enemies and NPCs. Unusual items and weapons and even weirder monsters.
And there will be a plethora of achievements with generous prizes- so long as your characters put on a good show.
Interested? Here’s some more details!
This will be a written campaign, basically just an RP with a turn order and dice mechanics. We will come up with an order that works for everyone- no need to battle for a date and time that works for everyone!
I’ll play various NPC’s but most importantly- your dungeon guide, a character who has survived in a past dungeon.
We will use a dice bot and I’ll tell you what to roll. Easy peasy!
Good vibes only! I want the RP to be a fun, safe space.
——
Here’s a basic character sheet! I recommend making a new character that you can develop throughout the game. I think it will be more fun that way!

Oo, sitting myself down for this one, even if I don’t have much experience with the book or D&D. I’m always a sucker for this kinda genre where characters have to go through games/challenges.
If you don’t mind me asking, what’s the world like outside of the gameshow? I’m trying to start brainstorming some ideas for my character’s backstory, so I was wondering what they would have experienced before being recruited into the dungeon. Also, as an extension of that, if they were added to the games because the aliens found them “interesting” and abducted them or some other reason.
That’s it for now, though I (admittedly) will probably have more later haha. Thanks!

Omg hi!!! I am also a sucker for this genre. I always loved the puzzling it out aspect of D&D more than the combat.
Before the dungeon, the world is just normal earth as we know it. When the aliens decide to take over a planet- all the buildings on that planet collapse inwards. They are what make up the dungeon itself! A safe house might be a McDonald’s or a library or a grocery store. Goblins might chase crawlers with tractors or trick them into a pyramid scheme. This lets the aliens learn about the culture of the planet as it’s destroyed, which is great for ratings.
When the collapse happens, anyone who is indoors at the time is said to be killed. Anyone who survives is advised of the competition and told to find the nearest entrance to the dungeon. Reaching the final floor is the only way to gain control of the planet again (although it’s yet to happen).
Each floor of the dungeon collapses after a period of time and if players fail to find one of the entrances to the next level before times up, well, its game over.
It would make perfect sense if the aliens did arrange for specific players to enter the dungeon, either by waiting till they are outside before the collapse or luring them out somehow, and then by placing a dungeon entrance nearby. They definitely manipulate the games alongside the AI to keep things interesting, and they tend to have favorite players!
I will try to have a character sheet up later tonight! Don’t be afraid to ask more questions! I’m sure I left a lot out and I’m figuring some out as we go!

Got it! Having the world be normal before the dungeons makes it pretty easy for me to make a background because I know the conditions of life on Earth very well. c;
Also, I hope you don’t mind me nerding out about the mechanics of the dungeon. :D As someone who’s working on designing a few of my own RPG leveling/magic systems, I may be just a little bit too interested in them haha. Feel free to tell me to tone it down if that veers a bit too deeply into meta-gaming. I like giving my characters goals they want to accomplish IC to get stronger, but at the end of the day, there’s still definitely an element of me taking advantage of OOC info to do so.
With that aside, I’m going to start cooking and asking about the aliens’ sponsorship system! I assume the aliens favor people who put on a good show~ Would it be possible for characters to take advantage of this and improve their strength by purposefully putting themselves into dangerous situations to attract viewers? And if you can, does their aid mainly affect the bases/out of dungeon zones or will there be other rewards as well? Additionally, can humans to interact with the aliens who are watching them/the streams they're using to do so?
Of course, that’s only if you’re okay with me leaning heavily into it. I don’t know how fleshed out it is in the source material or if you’d rather focus on the dungeon clearing aspect. Also, feel free to tell me to wait if you've already got an explanation planned but you need more time to finish writing it up.
Edit: Rewrote this so it'd have more clarity than my 1AM ramblings.

resuscitation feel free to nerd out as much as you like!
Taking risks and putting on a good show definitely reaps rewards. There’s two ways to get goodies in the dungeon- boxes rewarded from achievements and gifts awarded from sponsors.
Interaction is possible but difficult- as the aliens are off planet and watching through their screens. One way communication is allowed with your sponsor- but to avoid them giving any advantage and favoritism it’s only allowed from the crawler to the sponsor. Mainly meant as a way to show thanks.
There’s a recap every day that plays the highlights and with the number of crawlers it’s a bit of a feat to get air time. Showy battles, dramatic deaths, and interesting puzzles- or whatever else is good television- is more likely to make the show. Watchers only get a limited number of favorites (basically a way to save their favorite crawlers so they can come back and watch their journey)
Rewards range from base upgrades to weapons to buffs. Reward boxes have tiers (bronze, silver, gold, platinum and legendary) based on the challenge level and are said to be random (that feral AI comes into play here, as it seems to like to manipulate the games) but sponsor gifts are chosen by the sponsors themselves.

melancholies hi! I just added a character sheet in my first post!

kwip yes, the dungeon is the whole planet. As for the collapse, it’s sorta like all the buildings were flattened and their materials used to craft the dungeon itself. The books this is based on are like a combination of a video game and a book. The RP will be like a combination of a video game and an RP! Picture a crazed AI has been assigned to transform earth into one big souls-like dungeon crawler for alien entertainment- that’s the state of the world now, and the only way to fix it is to reach the bottom of the dungeon.
