Far away from any of the known regions, there is a lab where people and Pokémon have been taken to in the past so that experiments could be run on them. Some of these people and Pokémon were from alternate worlds and did not recognize their new surroundings while others were from this world. They were all brought to the lab at once where they were experimented on. The experiments also ended up creating human Pokémon known as Gijinkas and also resulted in the creation of hybrids, beings created by fusing a person with a Pokémon. These beings weren’t entirely uncommon but legendary Pokémon, Gijinkas and hybrids were still rather uncommon among the residents of the lab. The experiments had an almost free reign of the lab unless they were pulled for hostile behavior or for an experiment.
The lab itself is meant to bear a resemblance to Alola’s Aether Paradise in that it’s an artificial island. It’s also equipped with some of the best technology around. Humans run the lab but they allow their experiments to roam around and monitor them while they do so. There is also a hospital wing of the lab that is dedicated to diagnosing and healing medical ailments. These ailments range from broken bones to a whole array of other ailments. The hospital wing also does have to deal with poison and other status effects that can be brought on from fighting.
Pokérus is a microscopic life form that attaches itself to Pokémon. While beneficial to normal Pokémon, it causes a negative reaction to the experiments. Every experiment reacts differently to this life form however, the worst that can happen is a high fever which can lead to them drifting in and out of consciousness although this is extremely rare. A mild fever and muscle soreness are the most common symptoms. Then, there are the experiments that end up being completely fine.
