His heart pounded hard against his ribcage, and it took several blinks of tired, hazy eyes before he recognized his surroundings. He unfurled his wings as far as his position allowed for it, and waited several tense moments before emerging from his makeshift nest. It was disgustingly hot on the beach, and the widlclaw's thin fur and feathers did little to protect his sensitive skin from the scorching rays. Freyja's journey started out as normal as it could have been; running away from home, learning to be independent but still learning from friendly dragons along the way. Now he was alone again, and hunger and anxiety ran through his mind constantly. He blinked stupidly into the morning light, and listened closely to the waves crashing against the sharp crags of rock and beachwood, listened to the breeze that brought little relief from the humidity. Listened to his heavy breathing, and the soft 'pop' of his stiff joints as he flexed and stretched. The Tsunami Flats smelled rich with freshwater, and it was this life source that kept Freyja from immediately collapsing in the sun. He bowed low and drunk greedily from one of the tidepools. Even if he wanted to, in his weakened state, he couldn't sense another presence. He hoped he was as hidden and isolated as he felt.

Freyja awoke with a startled gasp, curled unnaturally beneath dying brambles. His heart pounded hard against his ribcage, and it took several blinks of tired, hazy eyes before he recognized his surroundings.

Joji flapped his deep red wings and descended, soaring in lazy, downward circles towards the endless blue beneath him. The Sea of a Thousand Currents rolled in white-crested waves, with the mosaic pools of the Tsunami Flats glittering in the morning light. Joji descended lightly onto the white shores. The sand did not sink under his feet. In spite of his heavy plumage, he seemed unaffected by the sun. There were just so many *perks* to an unconventional parentage, he thought. Lifting his head, Joji continued to follow the trail of arcane energy. Strange magic. It reminded him of dark hidden places in the Starwood, of the secrets hidden in the Starfall Isle. It made his feathers ruffle in anticipation, it made him smile. Ah, he thought, as he gazed into the distance with gleaming eyes. A wildclaw, practically teeming with magic, was drinking from the pools of water. Finally, something interesting. Joji let his pristine plumage wilt a little, allowed his clawed feet to sink into the sand rather than float on top of it. It wouldn't do to give the game away too soon, after all. He cleared his throat—more of a habit rather than a necessity—and spoke in his politest, most charming voice. "If you keep on drinking so quickly, friend, you'll start to feel sick."

As the day dawned, Joji was following the scent of magic.
