@Decaffeinated For Malachi: My parents always told me about the battle I would inherit. As we walked side-by-side on empty, rubble-filled streets, they would recount to me how the ironclad demons had torn down the world. How they never stopped coming, in huge hordes of shrieking metal- and why they continued to destroy them. Summoned in a time long past, my parents had been tasked by living beings to defend them while they fled over the horizon- and were never seen again. I found it all ridiculous. We were ghosts, holding on to the memories of creatures of blood and bone, in a world devoid of life. We were spirits, and spirits should be free to roam the earth. We should not have been tethered to the past. For all I knew, there was no such thing as life, and I was not about to stay fighting in its name for all eternity. So on one moonless night, as my parents left me to hunt down the machines, I escaped the ruins of the city I had never left before. I was a grey shadow, with scaly wings that reflected the nighttime sky as I slinked through the deserted metroplex. As I reached the edge of the city I did look back, once, thinking of the parents I was abandoning, but I knew they would never leave that place and would never knowingly let me leave either. I remember drifting across barren land, occasionally coming across machines (and promptly dispatching them). I remember chasing the sun as it fell in a burning blaze. I remember spending countless nights with nothing as far as eye could see apart from the ash that coated the ground. I remember… Disappointment. And my mother’s voice ringing in my ears, from centuries ago- from the only time I had ever asked her to let me leave the city. You will be let down, my son. You will be bored. This world is empty. It has been empty since the flesh-beings left and the iron-demons rose. And for a minute, on one particular night, as I heard her voice again I felt nothing but fury towards the flesh-beings for leaving. I threw back my feathered muzzle and let out a roar that was deafening in the silence. How dare those flesh-beings flee, after their discarded robotics rose against them! It should have been their responsibility to quell them. They should have never summoned my parents to their dying world. I should have never had to be shackled to this cold, dilapidated world of death and dreariness! Suddenly, there was a loud thump from the ground under my claws. I yelped and leaped back, snarling fiercely as a screeching began to emanate from the ash. I prepared myself to attack- for surely a machine would appear. But instead a hail of debris was thrown into the air as a gleaming drill-bit appeared. It was followed by a head of coppery hair and a black mask with mechanisms surrounding the nose and mouth. Two pale arms lifted the rest of the figure from the earth, revealing two skinny legs sheathed in black leather. From behind smudged lenses, two green eyes stared up at me. Eyes with life. The same life I could hear thudding in a cage of bone, in each breath that filtered through the mask. I realized then how the living creatures had disappeared. I realized my parents mistake. They weren't dead. They were hiding underground. I could only watch as the creature of flesh and blood extended a warm hand towards me.

My parents always told me about the battle I would inherit.

I remember…

Disappointment.
