His gut twisted as his mind thought about Springknight. It was wrong to leave them behind, just as it was wrong to leave behind Everchange, to let Briar and Zanfalcon go off on their own while he stayed behind. It was because of his sickness, he had told himself. He would've infected them if he had stayed, or hindered them if he followed. And now there was mention of the forest being "broken", as that frenzied Coatl said. It was reckless of him to abandon others, for they relied on him as much as he did on them, even if he didn't want to admit it.

Kutta's heart sank, his limbs felt sluggish and clumsy as he trekked through the woods, now just as lost as he was before. Didn't he want to remake a place he could call home? Why had he ran off from those who wanted to help him? Sure, he became weaker and more vulnerable when he had others to rely on to help him, but that might just be his body finally taking the time to fend it off, finally recover from it. Ever since he fled his previous clan and discovering he had caught the plague anyways, he never took a moment to ponder
how to recover from it.

The path before him was uncertain. Kutta's mind was heavy with guilt and what-ifs, chains tightening around his ankles as he took smaller and smaller steps. He stopped. His eyes looked up into the dense trees, admiring the thousands of needles upon the pines. Tiny bugs crawled along the bark, easily missed by passerbys and creatures looking for a snack. A slight smile formed upon his lips as a familiar blackness spread in the corners of his vision.

A faint buzzing played in the back of his mind, but it crept into his ears, down his spine, into his toes, blocking out all other sounds. It occupied his thoughts, but this sensation didn't scare him. He was used to it from when he was with his friends, Briar and Zanfalcon. If they were here then they would have laid him down and fetched him fresh water, made him smile with their chats they had with him, even if he could barely speak. But they weren't here.

Finally, his legs gave way, collapsing into a tangled heap. The rays of sunlight that snuck through the forest felt warm on him. He wondered where he would next wake up, and when. Back at the lake would be nice.

The last thing he saw was a blurry view of a dragon looking down at him. Were they calling out to him? It didn't matter. His eyes shut, and all was black.

Recollecting what has happened in the past since Kutta first tried to find a safe haven with Briar and Zanfalcon, he feels suffocated with guilt of his actions. Kutta's body finally gives way to the plague within himself, after being put through constant stress of the previous weeks and the realisation of what he had done. A dragon finds Kutta just as he faints.

The faster one had a harsh edge to them, angered about something. The other was calm as they explained their side, soothing to Kutta's ears. "...it's reckless to bring someone in like him here." "It's even more reckless to leave him out there. I didn't want..." Then he opened his eyes, gaze wandering around. Chimes and bundles of dried herbs hung from the ceiling, squares of bark with unknown runes carved into them at the end of all of them. Small baubles with fireflies and luminescent mushrooms gave the room an eery blue glow, but it was for the best since the whole place was made of wood and dried reeds. The bed Kutta laid on was made of actual linen and stuffed with feathers, something he hadn't seen in ages. There was a table nearby, cluttered with pots and bottles with liquids and mould and dirt. Books were piled haphazardly upon each other, tattered and smeared with mud and leaves as though they were prepared for camouflage against dragons hungry for knowledge. It worked- Kutta only spotted it after looking at the skull of a wild boar that sat next to them, marked with colourful streaks. He hesitated to call this place an apothecary, but it was the only word that would come to mind. Then, of course, were the two dragons at the entrance. Another Veilspun like himself, and a Spiral. When Kutta shuffled to sit up, the Spiral instantly fled, as though he snapped out of existence, meanwhile the Veilspun came over to Kutta's side, their hair elegantly braided so strands never caught on the random bits and bobs around the room. "Here, drink this." They poured him a cup of water from a pitcher on the table. He downed it, a bit too quickly as it fell down the wrong pipe, reflexes making him cough and hack. They leant him forwards and rubbed his back as he regained his breath again, patting him as he went back into the pillow once more. "What an enthusiastic one!" They giggled as they poured another cup, but they placed it on the table instead of handing him it. "How are you feeling? Can you tell me your name?" "Kutta." His throat felt like sandpaper, even after the drink. "That's good, you can say your name. I'm Veronica, I found you on the road down below, and thank the Plaguebringer I did, because you would've been food for the wolves. Are you alone?" "Yes. Can I..?" He gestured to the cup, and they gave it to him. A few gentle sips, and he noticed a tang to the water. It was musky with a hint of citrus, though he couldn't see any fruits or powders inside the wooden cup. He assumed it was some medicine for himself, since Veronica wasn't drinking any for themself. "You, ah, said you found me on the road below. What do you mean by that?" "I mean what I said. We're up in the trees right now. There's two others, Drake and Leonardo. Drake you'll meet soon enough, once he's gotten the courage to see you. Leonardo is tending to some eggs, so it'll be a while before you can meet him. We're not from around the Shifting Willows, but we know this place well enough. We're just investigating the fungi from around here, since people say that they have restorative properties to them. Just saying, so you know what kind of dragons we are." Veronica explained, taking the cup away. "You're not allowed to leave this bed, alright? You've pushed yourself far enough, and I can help repress your disease so you can recover." "Mm, but I'm fine. I managed myself out there, I can move around." Kutta insisted. The thought of not knowing the layout of where he's staying ticked him the wrong way, and began to get up out of the bed. As soon as he got onto all fours, he fell. His legs were like paper; he couldn't even support himself to stand. "Tell me that when you can actually walk outside this room without falling." Veronica lifted him back into bed and covered him with the sheet once again. They smiled at him sweetly, the runes upon her horns glowing faintly, and Kutta felt himself relax. The Nocturne limped towards Veronica, his scales and wings torn apart, multiple stab wounds and slices bleeding. His face was pale, one eye shut tight. "There's a clan coming. Raptoriks. Soon." He struggled to breathe, keeling over as he hacked up blood from the strain of talking. The Veilspun dropped down her tools on the deck of their home, soil and spores spilling across the planks, and rushed to his side. She laid him down on the floor, hands already moving around to tend to his injuries, faintly glowing as she attempted to shut them with her magic. "They want the eggs, they want their 'retribution' for what we've done. Unnatural. They know about us. They- they want to stop us." Leonardo groaned as Veronica concentrated herself, though whenever she moved on, the previous wound reopened itself. She knew she wasn't trained enough to fully heal it, but perhaps it'll be just enough to stop the bleeding. It wasn't working. "Hush, you've done enough to come back here to tell us. Can you still hear me? Leo!" His eyes were glazed over, still breathing faintly. Veronica changed her efforts to dull his senses; She was used to doing that, and he would pass peacefully in her arms over to the next life. She held him close. He pushed his face into her and closed his other eye. A jittery Spiral hopped out of the branches and down next to them, tail twitching. "Drake, get those yapping eggs out of here and hide." ~ It happened suddenly. Drake had only left half an hour ago, Veronica was fluttering from the nesting room, dark and clammy as it was, to her room where Kutta rested. The already messy room from before only had clutter piled into it, with scrolls and more books and, curiously, vials of a teal liquid. Kutta always asked what was going on when Veronica came in, but it was just before she closed the door behind her that she responded: "Listen. If anyone comes in here, you drink that and you fight like it's the Shade." "Let me come help you! Don't-" Kutta's futile words were drowned out by a sharp whistle that cut through the air. The door slammed shut, something large scraped outside the door, presumably to block the entrance. "Veronica!" He cursed himself as he heard her hissing and spitting as a series of clacking footsteps ran over the roof and down outside. "Dragon, we'll make an easy offer for you. Let us in the room behind you, and we'll let you scurry off back home." A shrill voice spoke. "Here's an offer for you: Flap back where you came from, and leave us alone. You've already done enough damage." "Hah! We've done enough damage. Well, that's your choice then." And a caw of battle came out, booming. Veronica valiantly stood her ground, snapping at every spear and every strike that pummeled down on her, returning some of her own painful attacks with bites and swipes, but she was never a fighter. She swiftly went down after her initial stance, weapons and arrows jutting out of her body. Kutta rolled out of the bed. They were already clearing the entrance to open the door. He pulled himself across the floor to the vials on the desk, knocking aside papers and glasses to the side. Orders were being shouted outside, his heart pounded inside. Hauling himself up, his hands grasped one of the vials before he went straight back down, limbs failing him. Kutta yanked out the cork with his teeth, face hit with an acrid smell that stung his naked eyes. He shouldn't drink it, he knew he shouldn't, for who knew what it was, but the door was already opening. Down the hatch it went. ----------------- There's never any time to rest it seems, for only a few days had passed before a gang of raptoriks arrive to attack the group. Leonardo was ambushed by them, and unfortunately passes from the wounds he received, leaving the other three alarmed for the raid. "Leonardo!"

They- they want to stop us." She knew she wasn't trained enough to fully heal it, but perhaps it'll be just enough to stop the bleeding. It wasn't working.

A jittery Spiral hopped out of the branches and down next to them, tail twitching.

"Drake, get those yapping eggs out of here and hide."

Kutta always asked what was going on when Veronica came in, but it was just before she closed the door behind her that she responded:

"Listen. If anyone comes in here, you drink that and you fight like it's the Shade."

"Let me come help you! Don't-"

Kutta's futile words were drowned out by a sharp whistle that cut through the air.

You've already done enough damage."

"Hah!

There's never any time to rest it seems, for only a few days had passed before a gang of raptoriks arrive to attack the group. Leonardo was ambushed by them, and unfortunately passes from the wounds he received, leaving the other three alarmed for the raid. The remaining dragons do their best to protect the most precious resources, and each other, but Veronica is lost when defending their home. Kutta drinks a strange liquid as a final resort she gave him so he could assist in the fight.

Drake tiptoed around the landing, avoiding the scattered feathers and scraps of cloth and shredded parchment and upturned dirt. There were no bodies to speak of, giving him a glimmer of hope that Veronica had made it. A thought gnawed at the back of his mind, telling him something was off as he looked. What was most important was that the eggs were safe, though. They sat securely in a sling across his chest, strapped tightly to let him move freely without fear of them falling. Drake walked over to where there was the most blood: in front of Veronica's room. His breath quickened as he came to peek inside, dreading what might be in there. If this was where she had been hiding all of their valuables, she had to be in there. "Veronica?" He squeaked. His blood dropped as he saw inside. It was as if a whirlwind had passed through, with the furniture upturned, glass shards scattered across the floor. Kutta was the only one who laid inside, still breathing he noted, but he was bloody and bruised. Their research notes were thrown about haphazardly, completely ruined. "They aren't here." Kutta turned his head up at him, voice hollow, face expresionless. Drake scurried backwards, making distance between themselves, wings shielding the eggs from him. "What- what do you mean?" "I mean they aren't here. Veronica isn't here. They won't be returning." Drake snorted, dismissing his point. He didn't dare to step closer to Kutta's aid, eyeing the tendrils that crept across his face and down his neck. He never got a good look at him, but there were now lumps that dotted his body, his extra wings looked like unrolled crumple paper. A chill reminded him that this was a true dragon, one that would be just like normal, except for the plague that festered his body. His stomach churned, and he hurried off to return the eggs back where they belonged, and to go and search for Veronica. ~ Night came by. Kutta still laid where he was from that morning. Nothing would move, save his neck. It was like a pair of scissors had cut his nerves from the neck down. No amount of struggling would even cause a single toe wiggle, the gentlest shift of the wing. The vial shut off his senses, for he had no recollection what occurred except for a flaming sensation deep in his gut that spread out across his entire body. The fire let him move freely once more, but once it fizzled out, he did too. Kutta's body hurt. His worst fear had come true, for he was all alone, utterly helpless, and nobody would return. Veronica was dead, Leonardo was dead, and Drake would rather die than come close to him. It was like the start all over again, and, yet again, he couldn't do anything to stop it. He giggled, smiling. The circle would come around once more, where another soul would come for him, and be lost to the world. Kutta shut his eyes, mind wandering back to the past, before he was here, before the plague had hit, back when he and the colony he lived in had a peaceful life. They even played pranks on travellers, nothing harmful, just to make themselves laugh. They always returned it back to how it was before, and got even more of a chuckle when they watched the travellers recount tales of faeries and pixies in the woods, telling their fellows to watch their bags. Oh, how Kutta would kill to return back to those times. Maybe he'd try to make his place in these Shifting Willows, make a legend for people around these parts. He hummed a soft lullaby to himself, one that he'd sing to the hatchlings when they couldn't sleep from nightmares. A large body stomped in front of the door, shaking the creaking boards.
