It was smooth sailing once Kutta had located the red pine Everchange told him about.
First, I find the tree I placed a little pile of rocks next to. Then, I just follow the marks I made along the way to find the lake. That's where I go to hunt. His words echoed in his mind as he tracked down the crosses and followed them, careful to remain quiet in the dead of the night. Hungry eyes rest in the boughs of trees and behind every trunk, waiting for something to prance along into their grasp.
Suddenly, Kutta exited the woods. There was the grand shore, sand and dirt speckled with a variety of pebbles, that led to the surface of a still lake. It stretched out far enough that Kutta supposed that it would take half an hour to walk to the other end. In the centre there was a small island nesting a quaint lodge, though it was hard to tell much else about the place from where he stood.
His ears twitched- it was deadly silent. Even his footsteps, as he walked closer to the shore, felt silent. Kutta warily looked around him, his senses warning him. There was no cover around here to run and hide, nor to wait to attack anything that might come for him here. He yanked a reed out of the ground, fiddling with it as he observed his surroundings.
Then he was pinned down. His neck was forced down, legs held, as he gasped. A jolt shuddered down his spine, head craning backwards. Through the locks of his hair, he could just about see a green Coatl snarling down at him.
"What is your business here, pest?" She spat out, a sticky slime dripping down her claws that gripped him tightly.
"I- I'm trying to survive. Please let me go." He choked out. Each breath he took felt lighter and lighter, the Coatl's face was starting to blur.
"Wait. You're not from around here, you're the one who's breaking the wildlife, aren't you? Don't lie to me." She lessened the pressure on Kutta's neck, letting him speak more easily.
"I'm not doing anything! I'm trying to find a place to settle down. Let me go, please, I'll walk away and you'll never see me again."
"Liar." She hissed, before tightening her hold once more. Kutta coughed, the corners of his sight fizzling into a black.
"Halt, fiend!" Kutta felt his limbs suddenly freed, gulping down air. The Coatl screeched, and Kutta felt a breeze pass over his head as something collided into his assailant.
A silvery Spiral had tackled against the Coatl, and the two were viciously fighting one another, though the Spiral's agile body aided them in avoiding her bites and swipes. One scream passed by and the fight stopped, the Coatl running off.
"Curse you!" She fled into the woods, holding a bloodied wing close to her body. The Spiral stood victoriously, wings flared, horns poised, as they glared down the attacker until she finally disappeared.
Kutta finally regained his composure, and stood to look at the dragon who just rescued him for no apparent reason. An aura of pride came off of them, though Kutta doubted that they had a lot of true combat experience, seeing that they had no scars nor wounds across their body, nor any weapons to speak of.
"Have no fear, traveller, for I, Springknight, shall help you wherever you wish to journey to. Let us adventure!" They announced, a giddy expression across their face. Kutta sighed, he wouldn't be shaking this one off any time soon. Though perhaps another dragon would be nice to have.
"I'm Kutta. Let's go... Springknight."
They nodded, wide eyes sparkling.

Pink streaks leapt through the air, a fluffy mist covering the waters as the sun began to break the surface. Songs and trills brought the land to life once the birds awoke, songs to show their glee to live another beautiful dawn. The first animals have crept out of their burrows and tunnels, rabbits and mice alike foraging for their daily meals. There were no vicious predators around the lake, no deadly growths prepared to poison one, there was only a peaceful harmony in nature here.
Kutta and Springknight laid curled up by a small campfire on the shore, the sticks now a pile of white and grey ash. Leftovers from yesterday were snuck away by squirrels with the confidence to approach them, leaving behind shells and bones from their dinner. The Spiral was the first to wake, stretching like a cat in bed, scratching at that one itch behind their ear.
"Awake, my good fellow, for there is journey to be had, exploration to be explored!" Springknight announced, shoving Kutta's body with their horns. Kutta instinctively scrambled up to his feet and looked for his assailant, just to let out an exasperated sigh when he saw Springknight grinning right at him.
"Just because it's sunrise doesn't mean we have to get up yet. It's cold..." Kutta shook his mane of dew and fluttered his wings. His breath blew out puffs of mist in the chilly morning. He felt sluggish, something he just had to live with as a Veilspun, though Springknight seemed to think otherwise.
"Cold never stopped anybody from moving onwards to the future. However, I shall be gracious enough to let you rest while I go gather some delicious morsels for our breakfast." They said, a gust flowing beneath their wings and tousled Kutta's hair. With the flap of their wings, they took off to the woods, their magic rustling the grass and leaves.
Kutta felt a fondness for the naive dragon. If they had met when he was younger, he knew that they would've been good friends, playing warrior with makeshift sticks and baskets for swords and shields. However, this is not the past. This is real, and this would not last.
~
Springknight returned with a mouthful of sticks and a handful of worms and caterpillars. There was no sign of Kutta, but they didn't mind. He had just gone off to wash up in preparation for the day. He would come back to a wonderful meal, prepared by them, and they would head off to wherever he needed to go. It reminded them that they also needed to wash, too. He'll be back.
...right?

The two rest by the calm waters of the lake after the fight from yesterday. Springknight is looking forward to adventuring with Kutta, not understanding the situation he's in. Despite this, Kutta decides to leave them behind when they went off gathering, not wanting them to hinder him down. Springknight waits by the camp, still waiting for him to return.
