1/11 - The Six of Them
It’s not just about freedom.
When they’d escaped, they didn’t just want freedom. Selfish of them, perhaps, considering their circumstances in that hellhole. But where Glitz was pessimistic and Kiyo was reluctant, the rest of them yearned for something more. Something nicer. They wanted comfort that wasn’t entangled with sacrifice. They were willing to work for it — for it was the only way — but they were not going to make themselves into martyrs and messiahs to fulfil a dangerous lie.
(Lost to time and scattered with age, stones of bitter glory marking rage.)
It wasn’t easy to run away. Their ideologies had sunken deep into their minds, and even now, they had difficulty distancing themselves from that sort of mentality. But where one went, the rest of them followed — both a means of protection, and a habit ingrained into them by their caretakers from young — and where one would die, the rest would move hell and heaven to get them back.
Perhaps their caretakers did not expect their attempt at making selfless sacrifices out of them would turn into undying loyalty. Or perhaps they did, but they just hadn’t expected it to apply to the rest of them too.
(In carpe diem will lilies lie, marked in exaltation with a guardian’s cry.)
Still, it was foolhardy of them to expect them to sit by and watch their youngest be marched off to sacrifice. So, in one night, with a burst of flames, the church’s six imperials — six sacrifices — disappeared into the darkness, leaving the remains of their past aglow in red and orange.
(Find a bright keep to eternity’s wish, a wreath of shadows to capture ever-bliss.)
They ran, and ran, and ran. None of them knew what to do with the prophecy they had constantly been told about — Glam was the closest the church had to a believer, and even then, she only believed in the last verse of it wholly and truly — but they all knew that they wanted no part in it. And from the tales they would hear as they ran, if others could avoid their fates and seize their own time, why couldn’t they?
(For six of imperials shall mark the dawn, golden light of moon forewarned.)
They have made a life for themselves, true, but it would catch up eventually. And when it did… they had tasted freedom, and comfort without sacrifice, and they weren’t about to leave their lives without a fight.
Kiyo, Omi, Glitz, Glam, Kaeya, Cuth. look i wasn’t going to put six portraits up there so you get the links here.
