about the kingdomlocke

Everything (rules, rolls, and dragon info) is being recorded on a tracker spreadsheet! For this reason I don’t bother updating dragon profiles, nor do I have a ranking masterpost. (If this changes in the future, well, you’ll see it.)

Lore-wise, this is a direct continuation of the fodderlocke (hence starting with round 18). After dethroning the previous/first leader of an ambiguously-criminal crew, the steadfast and fairness-minded Justiciar hopes to lead a new clan into a more peaceful tomorrow.

Joining him are, at the time of writing (round 21), two followers from the fodderlocke era, the unknowing [insert non-gendered term for nice/nephew] of the fodderlocke’s fallen leader, and a bright-eyed new recruit. They’re currently trying to find a place to call home, never mind establishing a kingdom—lore does not use kingdomlocke terms (the “kingdom” itself, jobs, other challenges) unless I deem it relevant.

Mechanics-wise, I’ve significantly altered the rules to fit my fodder-based playstyle, mostly because I do not want to use battlestones on or grind for hours with dragons I don’t plan on keeping long-term. And for lore spice, I’ve thrown in a bit of wanderlocke, to keep the travel interesting (and grounded). All of this is being “felt out” as I go along and is extremely subject to change.

I also use RNG judiciously to help flesh out lore and other events. This is occasionally marked via underline, like “Dragon chose not to help” (implied choice: helped, helpn’t). It’s just for lore spice.

All in all this continues to be me treating the forums like a blog and rambling indefinitely about pixel lizards. Detours into non-’locke lore will probably happen. Prose is a bonus, not a default. I don’t know why I’m making an introductory post at all, honestly.

recap/TL;DR

fodderlocke
  • First leader Xylophone is forced to stop mooching off his sister and her mate, and thus turns to crime.
  • Early recruits Stickynote and Marimba stick with Xylo through thick and thin, even through multiple accounts of theft and attempted backstabbings. (Among the failed traitors is Xenon, but he’s allowed to stay via an obscene amount of extra lives Xylo’s good will or something.)
  • Space is limited; some would-be recruits are rejected even when they win challenges fair and square. Two of these rejects, Justiciar (who Marimba personally escorts away) and Bobok, get together and Scheme™.
  • Justiciar and Bobok plan a surprise attack on the clan by enlisting a wayward aberration and planting seeds of doubt amongst the members. Although no one turns on their crewmates, the attack devastates the group.
  • Stickynote invites Xylophone out for old times’ sake—and kills him.
  • This sparks a civil war among the remaining dragons, with Xenon casting a decisive vote against Marimba and other Xylo-loyalists. Bobok is killed in the fray, as is Marimba (by Justiciar, no less).
  • Only Justiciar, Stickynote, and Xenon remain.

interim
  • The trio ends up staying with Xylo’s estranged relatives, sister Odessa and her mate Cen, and helps raise the couple’s new hatchlings. Odessa is not aware the trio had a hand in her brother’s demise, but she’s not too concerned about him either.
  • When Justiciar and crew finally depart, two of the now-grown hatchlings join them: Lithophone and Metallophone. (The third, Glockenspiel, stays behind.)
  • An odd imperial, “Paperclip,” offers to join. Justiciar declines.

Cactus Marzal --- round 22: new recruit!
RNG-determined breed: Guardian

The crew pushes through the thorns unscathed. Hooray! The RNGods smile upon my attempts at pacing and offer a new face: the vulgar but entertaining Leonine.

76780593.png

“Psst,” says the Shadow native, “hey, fellas. You look like you got somewhere to go!” Is it a compliment? Does it matter? He’s so foul-mouthed his dialogue cannot be adequately transcribed on the Flight Rising forums. (Lithophone is smitten. Justiciar is doing a terrible job at this whole “peace” thing.)

Amidst the banter, Leonine learns of the crew’s goal and brings them to a very special place: the Sunportal.

Since the Portal roll actually worked and the travel was uneventful overall, thought I’d add the spice of whether the new recruit even stays. He doesn’t. That’s amazing. He shows up, causes a little chaos, and leaves. Love that for him.

Oh, the “chaos” part?

Kamaitachi Blades --- round 23: Relationship
Two random dragons are now in a relationship. If one gets exalted, so does the other.

Going from the murk of Plague and Shadow to the bright, so bright, so deathly burning bright plains of the Sunbeam Ruins is a bit of a shock. Or at least that’s what the crew tell themselves as they feel increasingly lightheaded.

Oh, hey, shiny elemental energy thingy!! And with that the crew heads up to the Daylight Sanctum, which is definitely the right direction. It is so bright and so wonderful even Xenon is in good spirits, and he celebrates their arrival by confessing to a deep and long-lived admiration for Stickynote.

76331960.png76332980.png

I had no goddamn clue how else to justify this roll okay. If it was, idk, Justiciar and Stickynote or Litho x Quint, okay! fine! workable! And then the RNG gave me Xenon and I lost it. Number-sponsored comedy episode, I love it.

Welcome to the team, Evergreen.

Man, wish I’d got a screenshot, but yeah guess who got a ridiculously lucky egg drop. The goal and personality rolls… make little sense, as of now, but they could be fun as lore develops. She’s also likely to stay a hatchling in-lore for quite some time, for some realism’s sake, but I’ll only do 5 “survival” rolls.

Speaking of rolls: the circumstances of her finding were determined via RNG, although I overwrote the second because egg-hatching was more fun and matched gameplay better:
Quote:
circumstance rolls
found: abandoned/lost OR given willingly
as a(n): egg OR hatchling
in: a sheltered place OR in the open
first seen by: Justiciar OR Xenon OR both
And last but not least, seeing as she’s super dang pretty I will absolutely be keeping her regardless of ’locke death. And I think it’s more interesting if she sticks around for a while instead of anticlimactically (and depressingly! moreso than I want for this little story!!) dying young, so here’s the deal:

If Evergreen’s hatchling rolls call for death, I will instead 1) RNG a different dragon and 2) roll for their survival as if they’d fainted in coli.

Challenge rolls involving potential death may also be harder if I think it’d be dramatic for someone to die there.

Brown Bat --- round 29: levelup +4
Stickynote & Xenon

This morning, the sun’s warmth is not a welcome but a warning. The crew’s settled in a small, cozy alcove—which makes the absence of one immediately palpable.

Xenon is gone.

Justiciar is first to notice, rising with a start, careful not to rouse Evergreen; she stays asleep, and Justiciar tucks her into Lithophone’s wing. Stickynote, sensing the disturbance, is up just as quickly, and before long he’s out on Xenon’s trail.

He doesn’t return.
