A Fodderlocke.
___ Tucked into some obscure corner of the Thunderhead Savanna, the tiny town of Sandalwood sits peacefully amidst the tumultuous highland scenery. For as long as anyone can remember, the place has been as sleepy as it appears at first glance, the citizens all sweet and kindly. Even as it began to draw the traffic of tourism, nothing seemed to shatter the persistent peace that hung over the town.

That is, nothing until the Tumbleweed Gang came along. Criminals, all of them, or that's what they like to call themselves, anyhow. Despite their obvious lack of talent when it comes to illegal endeavors, they've still caused a stir the likes of which quiet Sandalwood has never seen before.

This is their story.

Part of an operation known only as “The Claw”, from which her code-name is sourced, Ironclaw was assigned the sleepy town of Sandalwood as her first big mission. The cruel leader - original four - day 003

“Ironclaw” might be the only one in the Tumbleweed Gang who was trained in criminal activities. Part of an operation known only as “The Claw”, from which her code-name is sourced, Ironclaw was assigned the sleepy town of Sandalwood as her first big mission. She is a cold persona and only joined the Tumbleweed Gang to get a look at the criminal scene in the area.

So far, she’s not very impressed. Which is why, precisely, she decided some changes were in order.

The old leader, Xena, was the root of the problem, she calculated. So she...took care of the problem, quickly and efficiently. Now, SHE is the leader of the Tumbleweed Gang, and for better or worse she will drive the operation forward--perhaps into infamy, perhaps into death.

She's been working with birds of prey nearly since her hatching day; she doesn't really know how to be happy doing anything else. Now that the Sandalwood Falconry Club has banned her from their ranks (not for poor practice but rather poor social interaction), she's been left adrift without a purpose. Weasel promised her that the Tumbleweed Gang would give her the outlet she needs to infiltrate the Club and reclaim her birds, and so she figures that joining them is her best step forward. If only her obnoxious cousin, Paskhal, didn't come along with her...
62694919p.png » Strix - the owlish - day 013
Stealthy and skilled, Strix is a masterful resource gatherer, procuring life's necessities quickly and quietly through a variety of less than reputable means. He isn't particularly interested in the riches brought by crime itself but rather the thrill of breaking the law and walking away unscathed. His efforts help keep the rest of the Gang well-fed and cared-for as they go after more valuable targets.
62806513p.png » Merion - the overtaken - day 018
With a haunted trident as her Charge, it's understandable that Merion would turn towards combat as a trade. However, the cursed being that dwells within her beloved weapon has encouraged her, through years of use, to use her skills in battle for more...malicious ends. Now, she wanders Sornieth with one thing in mind: destruction. She takes what she likes and doesn't let anyone stand in her way. Sandalwood is her most recent target, and the Tumbleweed Gang was quick to capitalize on her presence.
62636557p.png » "Vampire" - the enigmatic - day 015
No-one really knows "The Vampire"'s true name. He's a bit of an enigma, really, sneaking in with the night and leaving behind a slew of victims who've had the blood drained from their bodies. Whether he actually consumes the blood or merely steals it to leave a form of calling card is uncertain, but what is certain is that he's taken up residence in the sleepy town of Sandalwood. The Claw has managed to achieve a sort of running contract with him on account of Rot's own infamy, though he still insists on doing his own thing most of the time.
62966694p.png » Cojiro - the wistful - day 019
A member of Sandalwood's tiny post-office, Cojiro has been looking for something to spice up her mundane, ordinary life. The Tumbleweed Gang offered her a uniquely interesting experience that felt like a great, rewarding, place to start, so now she serves as their spy. Every day, she monitors incoming shipments of mail for beneficial items and letters to rival operations, which she then reports to her new allies. They are more than happy to compensate her for such efforts, and she's just glad to do something exciting for once.
62877143p.png » Harper - the curious - day 020
An enterprising entomologist, Harper has made it her life's goal to publish the first comprehensive paper in existence on the ranked pain levels of every insect bite in Sornieth. From the common mosquito to the legendary bullet ant, she aims to establish a tried-and-true scale for bite pain through testing various dragon species. Unfortunately, it's quite hard to simply...come up with the test subjects. The Tumbleweed Gang has just the perfect angle for her, though, and she's eager to see how the various members of the Claw react to the bites and stings of Sornieth's most powerful insects.
62355042p.png » Mihlos - the suave - day 021
A suave and secretive drake, Mihlos has a flair for the more...eccentric arts. Despite his Wind heritage, he can manipulate darkness as well as any Shadow dragon. He habitually creates "familiars" from congealed shadows, using them to fight and spy for him. Rumor has it that he uses pieces of his own soul to create them; his hesitance to create any more than he must seems to support this particular piece of hearsay.

» Xena
The enterprising leader - days 000 - 003

An impoverished young dragon who subsides in one of the abandoned barns just beyond Sandalwood proper. He has always been somewhat of a nuisance in the town, making off with food from the storefronts and rifling through the discarded possessions of the citizenry. In particular, he is known for stealing whole crates of underused books from where they are stored outside the library. Such things are his primary form of entertainment, and he is particularly thrilled by the cheap romantic novels that nobody else reads.

After reading a tacky western about a band of criminals known only as “The Tumbleweed Gang”, Xena has decided to start his own criminal enterprise in hopes of getting enough money to procure the finer things in life, like actually decent romance novels.
57910089p.png » Akantha - the jaded prophet - original four - days 000 - 004
A prophet from one of the Icewarden’s hidden operations in the Sea of a Thousand Currents, Akantha has gone somewhat insane now that she can no longer receive proper visions. Her last prophecy vaguely pointed her to the town of Sandalwood; she has wandered it since, trying to uncover her pre-ordained purpose. With the portentous return of the Banescales just recently past, she was on the look-out for any new opportunity. The Tumbleweed Gang proved to be just the new opportunity she was looking for; that’s how she took it, anyways.
58114612p.png » Ollrod - the confused - days 001 - 004
You'd never think kindly Ollrod to be a clever lock-pick, but he well and truly is. He's always had a knack for it, though he never really thought of using it for ill deeds. It was his brother Stonebinder who convinced him to come and see what the Tumbleweed Gang was all about; who could have guessed that only Ollrod would be deemed fit enough to join? Now without his brother's support, Ollrod isn't quite sure he can manage a life of crime.
57561495p.png » Nightmarewing - the pompous - day 002 - day 005
Almost too young to be a criminal, Nightmarewing (yes, that's the name he gave himself) makes up for his youth by being a stellar battlemage. Capable of manipulating light into weapon form and projecting a hypnotizing pulse through his wings, he's a force to be reckoned with on the battlefield, if you can get him to stop boasting about his "epic skills" first...
59737032p.png » Neofelis - the tinkerer - day 005 - day 006
Though his apathetic nature would not make him out to be a criminal OR a tinkerer, Neofelis is both, by some strange convention. Though he'll procrastinate as long as possible on most projects offered to him, crime and crafting are two areas where he rarely feels the need to stall. He's a clever hand with any sort of mechanism, able to rig a simple automaton in seconds from a few random scraps, and he's just as good at disassembling locks, hinges, and other such devices. His unique skills will help to fill a necessary niche--if he can manage to overcome both his garish, unstealthy coloration and his apathy, that is.
58078291p.png » Sarmlar - the freeloading weirdo - day 001 - day 010
Sarmlar appeared out of nowhere; the Tumbleweed Gang found him hanging around the hideout after they returned from a scouting trip. They asked his name. "Sarmlar" he said, bold and simple. They asked him where he came from. He just blinked--hundreds of eyes all along his body fluttering. Seemingly content with his answer, he trotted off to fall asleep in a pile of hay. The others don't exactly know what good he'll do for them, but, at this point, they're afraid to ask.
58412338p.png » Arelle - the infectress - day 003 - day 010
When you look at Arelle, all you see is the flowers. They bloom along her mane and tangle on her wings, releasing a sent so intoxicating you miss the bright red glimmer of her eyes, the cruel helmet that shadows her face. Arelle knows how manipulate the opinions of others; at this point, she hardly as to try. You give her a target and she gives you results, if there's something in it for her. She always gets the job done, sometimes by poison, sometimes by disease, sometimes by brute force as the circumstance dictates. She must have fallen on hard times to have been forced into quarters with the Tumbleweed Gang...perhaps, the relative anonymity of the operation was what appealed to her?
59919829p.png » Moralization - the vindictive - day 006 - day 010
Healers rarely see fit to align with more criminal enterprizes, but Moralization is one exception to that general rule. He has become rather disillusioned with the current state of draconic healthcare and seeks to rebel against what he fancies an unjust system. He has willingly offered his services to the Tumbleweed Gang, and will cure them of their ills to the best of his ability.
35903888p.png » Rohak - the veteran - day 007 - day 011
Old dragons are seldom fit enough to manage the athletic lifestyles of their younger peers, let alone the dangerous trades of criminal enterprises. Rohak cares not one whit for what his age would make him out to be; instead, he uses his vast experience to make the shock factor brought about by his appearance all the more deadly.
58139680p.png » Epimetheus - the thief - original four - day 000 - day 012
Much like the mythological figure for which he is named, Epimetheus lacks a certain degree of foresight. This, coupled with his impulsive nature, has created an excellently oblivious petty criminal. He specializes in theft; in other words, he tends to take anything he finds pretty or interesting. He might not even know that such things are wrong, but, then again, he signed up for the Tumbleweed Gang pretty quick, didn’t he?
60570261p.png » Amou - the heartthrob - day 008 - day 012
Amou is more clever than anyone gives her credit for. Their eyes stop when they meet hers, and their hearts stop not long after. She is not an experienced crook--she's been in the business only a few short months. But past experiences have made her practiced in the art of "flirt and kill", as she likes to call it. She sought out the Tumbleweed Gang for the opportunity to hone her craft as well as the benefits that come with organized crime; who knows wether it will actually provide the experience she seeks.
60691635p.png » Tetsui - the stealthy - day 010 - day 012
Small, quiet, unassuming. Parker and his twin brother Tetsui don't seem capable of much. Both are mute and neither can do magic very well, and yet their names incur fear in any criminal acquainted with them. Why? Every quality that would make them seem weak is a strength in disguise. They are the perfect assassins, darting through the darkness and striking noiselessly. They almost seem to read one another's minds, moving with a coordination seen only in the most practiced individuals. Their entry into the Tumbleweed Gang is a sign of utmost fortune--if they aren't here to eliminate the competition.
61026546p.png
61026547p.png
» Eulalia and Ferric - the vengeant - day 011 - day 012
Eulalia and her brother, Ferric, are full of seething rage despite their youth. Robbed of one parent before they even hatched and left with a grieving father to look after them, they quickly accumulated a desire for revenge against the dragons who wronged their family. Both are dedicated to learning as much as they can about combat and using their skills to exact their wrath on the Claw. Wether or not they will be capable of such a lofty feat remains to be seen, but they certainly have the anger and passion to make it happen.
62536169p.png » Paskhal - the compassionate - day 011 - day 012
Paskhal is...not a criminal. He isn't even a miscreant; in fact, he has never so much as had a bad thought in his life. He is merely a compassionate soul who stumbled across the Tumbleweed Gang after his cousin, Hawk, was directed to them. He does not see the Gang for their dirty deeds; instead, he sees their hurt and grief. All he wants is to help them recover from the destruction of their hideout, and he will do this however he can, even if it means supporting their life of crime.
58087412p.png » Mooney - the charlatan - original four - day 000 - day 016
One wouldn’t suspect criminal misdemeanors from a blind dragon, and that’s exactly how Mooney likes it. He’s been swindling the overly sympathetic dragons of Sandalwood for years, and they still haven’t realized it. Mooney supposes that the Tumbleweed Gang will be the perfect opportunity to gather more than he needs to simply scrape by, not to mention that he could use the support. He is still blind, after all.
62572225p.png » Dawnspirit - the belligerent - day 014 - day 016
An angry dragon who lacks a true outlet for her frustrations, Dawnspirit has turned to organized crime to help her vent the fury she feels. She's what some might call a brawler, taking any position that would allow her to fight or destroy. Her thoughtless, brutal tactics have seen her kicked from many more "refined" groups across Sornieth; fortunately for her, the Tumbleweed Gang has no such reservations.
60691634p.png » Parker - the stealthy - day 010 - day 017
Small, quiet, unassuming.
62673848p.png » Hinekiri - the dedicated - day 011 - day 017
A serious and passionate individual, Hinekiri is certainly a force to be reckoned with--both on and off the battlefield. Though tracking and patrolling are the particular skills that the Tumbleweed Gang appreciates in him, he also has a clever mind. The information that he gathers is almost always reported to the Gang's leader alongside a suggestion of the next step forward; though he is young, his plans almost always receive official support.
62556131p.png » Harvestman - the disconcerting - day 013 - day 017
Small and spindly, with a tiny voice that few care to hear, Harvestman seems a bit too fragile for a life of crime. However, years spent surviving in the harsh desert wilderness have taught her a tenacity that few city-born dragons can match. Without access to the tree sap commonly used by faes for their magic, Harvestman turned to cactus juice as an alternative. While this material makes a poor base for amber nests, it is uniquely suited for magical attacks. With such powerful projectiles in tow, both survival and crime come to Harvestman with ease.
44762540p.png » Bryn - the immovable - day 014 - day 017
Bryn has been touring Sornieth for a long time in an effort to conserve endangered species. His latest project has landed him on a large swath of abandoned farmland where a rare species of barn owl has taken up residence...and a criminal enterprise. After panicking for a long time about the potential havoc such a careless group of dragons could do to his beloved owls, he decided quickly to insert himself into their organization in an attempt to regulate their actions. The Gang, being short on members after some particularly ill-fated raids, isn't likely to make him leave.
62818989p.png » Giovanna - the portentous - day 015 - day 017
A diviner who has fallen on hard times, Giovanna has learned to use her premonitions in an entirely new way: to commit crimes. One doesn't have to be a particularly good criminal when they can see the future, and Giovanna is mildly successful in her endeavors. The future can be fickle, however, and fickle doesn't pay the bills. The Tumbleweed Gang can offer her better job security--and she can bolster their efforts with her visions. It's a win-win situation!
62864127p.png » Veilwing - the devious - day 017 - day 017
Veilwing runs a totally legitimate bakery that is one-hundred percent not a front for a contraband smuggling ring, not at all. Her shop has been in Sandalwood for decades, passed on through generations of similarly devious tundras who use their soft demeanors and delicious goods as the perfect disguise. After hearing of the legendary heist at the Helmscopper Family Bank, Veilwing decided to extend the breadth of her ill-deeds to encompass the Tumbleweed Gang's efforts. Now, she provides them with a safe place to lay low and a slew of illegal items, alongside her shop's signature baked goods.
61059194p.png » Destin - the dealmaking - day 017 - day 018
One of Sandalwood's local ranchers, Destin only recently learned of the Tumbleweed Gang; he was quickly acquainted after he stumbled across their hideout whilst scoping out abandoned farms to use in his business. Naturally, the discovery surprised him, but not enough to turn him off the thought of procuring the property. In exchange for his support in heists and a small portion of his herd, he's been allowed to use the Gang's territory to his own ends. His presence makes the Gang's hold on the land far harder to notice.

Growing up in the Scarred Wasteland, he was never afforded the jewels and finery he decided he deserved. Therefore, the turn to crime, for him, was quite natural. He spent a great deal of time scouring trade routes, gradually winding his way towards the rich caravans of the Lightning lands. He gained great material riches at the cost of notoriety; eventually, the so-called "Baron of Rot" was forced to flee the roadways and find solace in a smaller operation, nursing his bruised ego all the while. At first, the Tumbleweed Gang seemed the perfect place to settle. However, when one of its members, split to form her own group and threatened to destroy the Gang, Rot quickly fell in with her new operation. The Claw, as she called it, was dangerous, and efficient, but the way "underlings" were talked down to rubbed Rot the wrong way. After being treated like worthless fodder, he decided that it was time for a new order...his own.[/columns] [columns][nextcol]» Cloudrun - the destructive - day 010 Cloudrun is a master of demolition. She's a bit ditzy and unprofessional, which has cost her many an official job with more established criminal organizations, but such traits mean nothing when she is given a chance. There's nothing in this world she loves more than breaking something--or someone--down to their base parts; perhaps, her skills will prove useful in dismantling Ironclaw's schemes.[/columns] [columns][nextcol]» Selena - the conniving - day 011 A deserter from the Icewarden's primary force of Gaolers, Selena uses her official documents to grant her access into whatever she pleases, especially in small towns like Sandalwood. With few official Gaolers about to disprove her story, frightened shopkeeps are more than glad to let Selena have her way--whatever it takes not to face the Icewarden's wrath! When Ruriske found and approached Selena about her skills, she was quite glad to offer her protection to the newly-founded branch of the Claw; after all, excusing the actions of a criminal enterprise to local authorities would net her a much greater benefit than she could achieve on her own![/columns] [columns][nextcol]» Yadael - the prodigy - day 011 When adolescent Yadael acquired a strong interest in gardening, the Claw was naturally concerned that their efforts to train him into a high-class criminal had gone to waste. Fortunately for them, this was merely the beginning of an extraordinary new form of criminal action: poisonmaking. Entirely self-taught, Yadael used his mild ability to speak with plants to develop a wide variety of fast-acting toxins to aid the Claw's endeavors. Certainly, this view is one Nonet herself encourages in others, though any who take more than a moment to consider her actions might find that something fishy waits beneath the surface...fortunately, the Claw isn't particularly picky over what talents it welcomes, be they the result of true religious devotion or something more cultish and sinister. Nonet is certainly grateful for a way to practice her "dark arts" in peace; a little crime here and there has never been an issue.[/columns] [columns][nextcol]» Crayton - the creative - day 017 When Crayton was a hatchling, orphaned by his parents and thoroughly alone in the world, he learned to make his own friends with magic. He quickly picked up the art of animating inanimate objects, enchanting pebbles and sea-shells to talk with him when he had no-one else to keep him company. He continued to hone that skill as he aged, developing it over time into a monstrous tactic for crime--which provided a meal more reliably than scavenging ever had. Now, his imaginary friends range from towering pieces of Lightning-flight machinery to fossils risen from beneath the dunes. Sandalwood happened to be the first safe town he encountered in his flight, and he decided that it was the perfect place to lay low for a bit. 60253980_350.png » Rot
The covetous leader - original deserter - day 012

Rot is a dragon of rich tastes.

After being treated like worthless fodder, he decided that it was time for a new order...his own.
IcBeQK3.png
60764432p.png » Cloudrun - the destructive - day 010
Cloudrun is a master of demolition. She can take one look at something and know just how to take it apart, and she always carries an arsenal of means to to the job. She's a bit ditzy and unprofessional, which has cost her many an official job with more established criminal organizations, but such traits mean nothing when she is given a chance. There's nothing in this world she loves more than breaking something--or someone--down to their base parts; perhaps, her skills will prove useful in dismantling Ironclaw's schemes.
62550090p.png » Selena - the conniving - day 011
A deserter from the Icewarden's primary force of Gaolers, Selena uses her official documents to grant her access into whatever she pleases, especially in small towns like Sandalwood. With few official Gaolers about to disprove her story, frightened shopkeeps are more than glad to let Selena have her way--whatever it takes not to face the Icewarden's wrath! When Ruriske found and approached Selena about her skills, she was quite glad to offer her protection to the newly-founded branch of the Claw; after all, excusing the actions of a criminal enterprise to local authorities would net her a much greater benefit than she could achieve on her own!
62671668p.png » Yadael - the prodigy - day 011
When adolescent Yadael acquired a strong interest in gardening, the Claw was naturally concerned that their efforts to train him into a high-class criminal had gone to waste. Fortunately for them, this was merely the beginning of an extraordinary new form of criminal action: poisonmaking. Entirely self-taught, Yadael used his mild ability to speak with plants to develop a wide variety of fast-acting toxins to aid the Claw's endeavors. Now everyone carries a dart-blower on them at all times so that they may use his skills to the fullest in their crimes.
62558581p.png » Nonet - the pious(?) - day 014
At first glance, Nonet is merely an odd dragon with a great grip on some of the more obscure forms of Shadow magic. Nonet is certainly grateful for a way to practice her "dark arts" in peace; a little crime here and there has never been an issue.
62734271p.png » Crayton - the creative - day 017
When Crayton was a hatchling, orphaned by his parents and thoroughly alone in the world, he learned to make his own friends with magic. Though his skills exhaust him quickly, they are devastating when used properly--something the Claw is eager to make use of.
62610856p.png » Treydis "III" - the anarchist - day 018
A member of an anarchist group from the Light lands, Treydis was forced to flee after the rest of society took particular offense to his group's arguments. Sandalwood happened to be the first safe town he encountered in his flight, and he decided that it was the perfect place to lay low for a bit. Membership with the Claw seemed to be an excellent way to make some extra treasure with which to fund the next phase of his life, and he gladly offered his myriad talents to the group's cause.
62955228p.png » Lynwen - the dogged - day 019
Bitten by an opal cobra as a hatchling, Lynwen suffers from a rare, quick-spreading form of gembond. Unless she keeps constantly on the move, the opalescent growths on her body are liable to wedge themselves into her joints and keep her from using the attached limbs. She was persuaded to serve as a lookout for the Claw with promises of a constant food and water source, so now she prowls the streets of Sandalwood and delivers information back to their hideout in the evenings.
63146786p.png » Haurahi - the young - day 019
The child of leader Rot and his beloved, Cloudrun.
63146787p.png » Terrowin - the young - day 019
The child of leader Rot and his beloved, Cloudrun.
63146788p.png » Panorus - the young - day 019
The child of leader Rot and his beloved, Cloudrun.
63063681p.png » Sparklestar - the theatrical - day 020
Theatrical and showy, Sparklestar has a knack for impressive magic. She craves attention and praise, using her skills to set off magnificent displays of magic that awe--and quite literally hypnotize--those around her. She has a spell for every situation, able to confuse, distract, or control those that view her magic with ease. The only issue is that her style quickly becomes recognizable in the towns she raids. She must travel often, forging new alliances in every locale. Here, she's chosen to side with the Claw until she wears out her welcome; then, she'll head off for better horizons.

While Yadael developed an unforeseen talent for poisonmaking, young Srilk never experienced a sudden revelation of skill. » Prologue: Five's a Crowd Xena sat back on his haunches and looked critically over the note he had penned, dark eyes tracing every letter with care and precision. It was done on his finest paper—some old scrap set out behind the printing store on main street—with words painted in with the last blots of ink he owned. It was simple and small, something an ordinary dragon wouldn’t glance at twice. But he wasn’t aiming it towards the ordinary dragon, anyhow. He wanted the bad ones, the criminals. He held the note up to the light that streamed in through holes in the roof. It was perfect, as flawless as it could be. His penmanship was excellent, the letters all even and straight. The ink hadn’t bled or smudged. It was such a small thing to be proud of, but he really was proud. This represented a future that might not involve scrounging in the alleys for the rest of all eternity. Xena released a breath he didn’t quite realize he’d been keeping and grabbed his tailcoat from where it hung on a loose board by the door. The one piece of half-decent clothing he owned, it was what he wore when he wanted to walk amidst the “normal” folk who peopled Sandalwood. It was still as baggy as ever, loose folds of cloth pooling around his wrists, but he wore it with a dignity that made even that seem intentional. With such an important mission standing before him, it felt only fitting that he should wear such a formal piece of attire. If things went to plan, he would wear the tailcoat every day. He, as a leader, would need such a distinguishing mark from those who would join him. With a sharp tug on a crinkled bit of his undershirt, Xena strolled out of the rotting barn he called home. He sauntered past all the collapsed outbuildings that stood like obelisks over the rolling fields of grass and wild grain. Lightning flickered in distant clouds, dancing over the dark savanna. It was a pretty vista, in a way, especially to one who had never known the joy of white-sand beaches or bright gardens. The sleepy town of Sandalwood was in view within minutes, rising slightly above the surrounding plains. The bright noonday saw dragons scurrying this way and that, to storefronts and businesses alike. Lazily among them, tourists strolled down the wooden walkways and marveled at the old-fashioned construction. It was its own little ecosystem, wild animals poking from alleys and the lawns of homes, wary but not unused to the dragons who towered above them. Xena could care less about any of that. He turned well before he would cross beneath the rickety arch-gate that lead to main street. Instead, he wandered down to the seedier bazaar that sat alongside the sometimes-dry riverbed. Just like main street, the bazaar was bustling, dragons calling out prices from beneath sun-bleached awnings. In all of tidy little Sandalwood, the only place to find a criminal was here. He stepped quickly into one lane and slipped into the milling throng, well used to blending in. When it was appropriate, he stopped to browse a stall’s wares or to answer the calls of a hawker. Just enough to seem deliberate, like he was here to buy. It was really a meaningless thing, no dragon sparing him a second glance, but he was intent on utmost caution. If this was to be the path his life took, he needed to be ready. He looped slowly around towards the auction block, where the one dragon who could deliver his message was sure to be lingering. It was down by the docks, ready to receive shipments when the mountain snowmelt filled the rivers. In the heat of the summer it would be practically abandoned, but Weasel would be there, regardless. Weasel was a peculiar little dragon, a cunning sprial who do anything and everything in exchange for a bit of coin. She’d take trinkets, too, if they had a story behind them; even a promise could be used in barter if she trusted you. The poor flocked to her in droves; she could provide food cheaper than anyone else, if a dragon wasn’t picky for its freshness. And, despite all the attention, she never seemed busy. Always, she was there and ready for another order. Xena spotted her the minute the auction block was in view. She was basking in the bright sun of noon, her face eased into a familiar smug grin. Nary another dragon wandered nearby, all caught up in the fullness of the bazaar. At the sound of his steps, she lazily opened one red eye and looked him up and down smartly. “Xena, old friend! How’s life treating you? Not too well if you’re back to visit me, I’d assume.” And Weasel never forgot a face, either. “Actually,” Xena snapped back, “I’m not doing as bad as you would assume, thank-you-very-much. What I’m here for today is a bit of courier service; surely, you out of anyone could help me?” “Courier service, you say? I could be persuaded. What’cha delivering?” “A note,” Xena pulled the pearly paper from one of his coat pockets, careful not to wrinkle the precise folds. “That’s it? Maybe you have fallen on better times, Xena. Who’m I getting this to, and what are you going to pay me for the service, hmm?” Xena pulled a pawful of treasure from yet another pocket and Weasel whistled. “Nice! Good on ya, Xena, gettin’ that life turned around.” It was the last bit of money he had, but she didn’t need to know that. “Quite,” he lied breezily, “Now, would this be enough to compel you to deliver the message to some…unknown recipients? I need my message spread under the radar.” He handed over the note. She read it. “Oh, I see. You know, I’d say we have a deal. That much treasure and I’ll have some dragons ready for you.” He handed it over. “My thanks to you, Weasel. I’ll see you next time I need something done.” With that, he took a brisk pace away from the auction block and left Weasel to sort his affairs. » Prologue: Five's a Crowd

55890861.png

Xena sat back on his haunches and looked critically over the note he had penned, dark eyes tracing every letter with care and precision.

Not too well if you’re back to visit me, I’d assume.”

And Weasel never forgot a face, either.

“Actually,” Xena snapped back, “I’m not doing as bad as you would assume, thank-you-very-much. What I’m here for today is a bit of courier service; surely, you out of anyone could help me?”

“Courier service, you say? I could be persuaded. What’cha delivering?”

“A note,” Xena pulled the pearly paper from one of his coat pockets, careful not to wrinkle the precise folds.

“That’s it? Maybe you have fallen on better times, Xena. Who’m I getting this to, and what are you going to pay me for the service, hmm?”

Xena pulled a pawful of treasure from yet another pocket and Weasel whistled. “Nice! Good on ya, Xena, gettin’ that life turned around.”

It was the last bit of money he had, but she didn’t need to know that.

“Quite,” he lied breezily, “Now, would this be enough to compel you to deliver the message to some…unknown recipients? I need my message spread under the radar.” He handed over the note. She read it.

“Oh, I see. You know, I’d say we have a deal. That much treasure and I’ll have some dragons ready for you.”

He handed it over. “My thanks to you, Weasel. I’ll see you next time I need something done.”

With that, he took a brisk pace away from the auction block and left Weasel to sort his affairs.

She sleeps a LOT, and also writes quite often in this thin little leather diary. I can never seem to find it when she leaves to hunt; her den is always empty save some hay to sleep on. Not that I’m one for snooping, or anything like that. Mooney and Akantha both bedded down in the cow paddock, each taking their own stall. Mooney’s is full of old cloth scraps, which he brought in with him, and Akantha’s is lined with smooth river-rocks that surely didn’t come from the river down by Sandalwood. Each one is carved with a date but she won’t tell me what they mean. Mooney stumbles into her den often by mistake; Akantha finally got fed up with it and put a deep gouge in the wood next to Mooney’s cubby so that he’d know which one it was. Altogether, I’d say the team is looking pretty strong. Ironclaw is our brute force, obviously, and I’d say Akantha is too, though she only gives me vague answers when I ask what sort of criminal work she’s good at. Mooney’s our silver-tongue—apparently, he’s been swindling the folks of Sandalwood out of their coin for over a decade—and and Epimetheus is obviously our thief. We’re missing a few key dynamics, though, so I managed to convince Weasel to keep spreading word about the Gang for me. The Twentieth

I am penning this log entry one week past the establishment of The Tumbleweed Gang, to report our progress in fixing up the hideout.

It’s going well! Everyone—except Mooney, who is actually blind—has helped a lot in finding and applying spare lumber to the barn. We have so far fixed the biggest holes in the roof and nailed down some of the siding that was prying itself up. Epimetheus is really good at finding nails for some reason; maybe it’s because they’re shiny? He does like shiny things.

I am also pleased to report that tensions are minimal; everyone has a space of their own to hide in if things go south. Save the hayloft—which is mine alone—they were allowed to pick their own place in the barn; very generous, I know.

Epimetheus, that weird little creature, decided that the rafters were the best spot for him. He likes to see how fast he can run across all of them, and he had a little hoard of oddments at the place where a bunch of beams meet. He behaves a lot like a hatchling, but he’s a right clever thief; I was reading in the loft and he snatched the barn keys off the keyring that was right beside my head and I didn’t even notice. Impressive, as I’m quite keen usually.

Ironclaw couldn’t quite find a secluded area big enough to fit her, so she manages half-in and half-out of a horse stall in the back corner.

Hopefully, new recruits will be pouring in soon!
