So, of course, he'd take the eggs from his mates and hide or sell or adopt them out. Give them to someone who might be able to raise a good dragon. It wasn't like his current mate, Helvetica, cared at all. It always stung a little, giving away his eggs, but he'd never given the emotion much attention. But… it seemed to hurt more this time as he set the egg down in the rotted log. Maybe it was because there was only one egg this time. He wasn't sure. No, no… Roz… “I got you, Rozzie. You’re safe with me.” The hatchling was beginning to calm down, and Kayhen breathed a sigh of relief. Though, this was quite the dilemma. Taking Rozzie back to the lair was out of the question- he didn’t want his clanmates questioning where he got her from, and then there were the moral problems he’d been thinking of earlier… of course, he could still go through with his original plan and take her to the crossroads or the trading post. Prologue:

Kayhen picked up the egg cautiously. examining it. He traced the bumps and divots in the shell lightly, admiring the glowing patches.

He wasn't sure what to do.

See, Kayhen knew he would be a terrible father. His line of work was no place for a hatchling, no matter how easy it would be to draw people in with one. The Mirror may have been a scoundrel, but even he had standards.

He gave the egg one last small smile, then stood cautiously and picked up his hat. He sighed and turned his back on the egg, starting to leave-

Crack!

Kayhen froze. He twisted to look back at the egg he was trying to abandon, eyes wide with shock. A crack ran the length of the egg, which shook as more lines started to appear.

"Oh no," he gasped, whipping around to press his face close to the hatching egg. “Oh no,” he breathed.

Pieces of the shell began to break away, and Kayhen couldn’t think of what else to do besides watch. Finally, the egg collapsed, and a small Mirror plopped onto the ground. Kayhen couldn’t help but stare.

Day 0: What little light filtered into the Tangled Wood had long since been consumed by the dark of the night. It was a quiet night. It was perfect. It was too dark for normal dragon vision to see anything, but her heat vision would be fine for the time being. Quietly, Rozzie stood up. She tucked her wings in carefully as she looked toward the front of the lair and stepped out of her nest. She pulled a note she'd written the night before from beneath it and set it lightly atop the nest where she slept. Her father’s familiar, a dark-feathered Corven named Abactius who’d come by as an ambassador a few Trickmurks ago, rested near the mouth of the wooden structure. Rozzie’s father had assigned him to watch over her when he wasn’t there. The young Mirror crept closer, pleased when her movement didn’t wake Abactius. It was time. Still being as quiet as possible, she cautiously snuck around Abactius, and slipped out of the lair into the cool night air. She knew that some dragons lived in groups, but her father had always said he was on his own in his travels. And where was ‘home’? As far as Rozzie was aware, the only home Abactius had was the lair she was standing outside of right now. After all, you couldn’t have a ‘home’ if you were constantly traveling… right? It all just sat wrong with her. What else had her father been hiding from her all these years? So, she’d prepared to leave. She’d hidden a bag in the brambles, which she now retrieved. She’d hadn't packed much, just some dried meat, a waterskin, the letter from her father, and a gemstone from her tiny hoard. She secured the bag under her wing and straightened up, allowing her wings to unfurl in a stretch. She wasn't sure where she was going. All she knew was that she couldn't stay here, stay with Abactius, any longer. She needed to discover the truth about her father. The truth about herself. She looked back at the den one last time. Abactius was still sound asleep. "Goodbye, old friend," she murmured. "I hope you can understand why I left. I hope father doesn't punish you too harshly." Satisfied, Rozzie took a few steps away from the wooden lair. She took a deep breath to steady herself, then tucked her wings back in and ran off into the inky black night. Day 0:

What little light filtered into the Tangled Wood had long since been consumed by the dark of the night. It was a quiet night.

It was perfect.
dragon?age=1&body=91&bodygene=23&breed=3&element=7&eyetype=1&gender=1&tert=19&tertgene=9&winggene=19&wings=24&auth=c1ed1015017fc6447927ddf3379b5894c9ac37d3&dummyext=prev.png

She hesitated the moment she was free, sparing a final glance back over her shoulder at the sleeping Corven.

Rozzie had never been far from the lair. Her father had made it quite clear what boundaries she wasn’t allowed to cross unless he was taking her on a hunting trip, which had always been a treat. She could remember that when she was a hatchling, her father had come by nearly every other day, but his visits became less frequent as she grew up. He told her that his work required him to travel all over Sornieth, explaining his long absences. But, just the other night, she’d found a letter in the brambles outside the lair, sealed with an odd symbol she didn't recognize.

The young Mirror stared at it blankly, a growl building up in her chest. Something flickered in the corner of Rozzie’s heat vision, and she snapped her head up track the movement. The creature sprang out, tackling the mechanical bird and cutting its squawks short. Now visible in the dim light, Rozzie recognized it from her father’s books. A Fae dagon. She’d never seen one in person, but it was just as tiny as it was described in the encyclopedia. Its words were punctuated by agitated flicks of its fins. The bird’s beak clicked shut and the Fae flapped its wings to pull itself away, apparently satisfied. “I am so sorry about that,” it (he?) said, turning to look at Rozzie. "Sen here is programmed to alert to intruders, but… It was more effective back when I was part of an actual clan.” “It’s fine,” said Rozzie. “Sorry I intruded on your land. I guess your lair is around here, then?” The Fae nodded. “No worries. You're plenty far enough away from it, and it's too dark to really notice it anyway. Honestly, it’s kinda strange that you're out this late on your own… you’re a Mirror, aren’t you? Where’s your pack?” His fins snapped up. “Oh no, are you lost?” "Er… not exactly. I don't really have a pack. I've lived alone aside from my father my whole life, but… it's kinda complicated. I ran away, basically." "Oh." Rozzie didn't need to know Fae crest signals to see that the smaller dragon was at a loss for words. "Uh, well, I'd invite you back to my current lair, but…" He paused, looking Rozzie up and down. "I'm not sure you'd fit." "Really? I'm young, and still pretty small. Do you live alone?" "Well, no, but…" He trailed off, fins twitching in thought. "Here, I'll show you." He didn't wait for a response, flitting off and clearly expecting Rozzie to follow. It was only a short walk before the Fae announced, "We're here!" He fluttered ahead and called out, "Hey Rhi! We've got a visitor!" He'd led her to a large fallen tree, and she stooped to the ground to look inside. The inside seemed barren, but before she got a good look at it, another dragon's face appeared in her view. "Hi!" A Spiral, she remembered from the books. "I'm Rhiderch!" the Spiral stated excitedly. "What's your name?" "Uh. It's Rozzie." She swished her tail across the ground. "You live with the Fae?" "The F… oh! You mean Sinsey?" Rhiderch laughed, twisting around in midair. "Did he forget to tell you his name? He's kinda scatterbrained like that." Sinsey perched on the fallen tree, crest relaxing. “Yeah, Rhi here is my lairmate. See, my birth clan had this thing where once you’re of age you have the option to strike out on your own and, well… I wanted to see new horizons. I ran into Rhi here pretty soon after.” Rhiderch added, “I just got tired of sittin’ around in my boring ol’ clan!” Sinsey’s crests twitched in amusement, then looked to Rozzie. “What about you? You said you ran away, right?” Rozzie took a breath, and then explained how she grew up isolated from other dragons, about her father, about Abactius… about the letter she’d found. “I didn’t really think about it,” she admitted during her conclusion. “I just packed up and left, thinking maybe I could figure out what all my father had been lying to me about. Then Sinsey’s bird found me, and… now we’re here.” Sinsey and Rhiderch stared at her, processing the story she’d told them. Finally, Rhiderch broke the silence with a grin. “Awesome. Can we come with?” “With me?” “Yeah, I mean, you’re goin’ on an adventure right? SQUAWK!

Rozzie jumped at the sudden loud noise, whipping around to locate the source.

Day 2: Rhiderch and Sinsey, it turned out, didn't have many belongings to speak of. Both were ready to leave well before midday, the agreed time to leave. Rozzie had woken up a few hours prior to the scheduled departure time, standing up and stretching both her legs and wings, taking note of their length idly. She was still on the smaller end for a Mirror, but she didn’t think she was going to grow much more. Her father hadn’t been much bigger than she was now… then again, she had never seen her mother. She was broken out of her musings by the squawks of Sen, signaling Sinsey and Rhiderch’s return- apparently, the two had gone out to gather insects to add to Rozzie’s travel pack. Rozzie didn’t mind; the extra food was easy enough to carry. The trio (plus Sen) had set off a bit earlier than planned, happy to be ahead of schedule. “Where are we going, anyway?” Rozzie asked. “There’s more to Sornieth than just the Tangled Wood, right?” “Of course there is,” Sinsey replied, perched on Rozzie’s back. Honestly, he was so light, Rozzie had barely even noticed he’d landed on her. His wings brushed against her as they spread to display his emotion. “Right now, though, we’re heading to the Forum of the Obscured Crescent. We’re in the Driftwood Drag.” Rozzie tilted her head curiously. “Isn’t the Forum where the Shadowbinder resides? And where we send dragons to be Exalted?” “Correct.” “I’ve heard some clans have lairs near there!” Rhiderch added excitedly. Sinsey’s tail twitched. “I’ve always wanted to see it. Besides, if you want to see the world, Roz, this is a good place to start!” Rozzie’s crests twitched in amusement. “Since when did I say you were allowed to call me Roz?” A cry broke out across the clearing, interrupting Sinsey before he could reply. All three dragons froze, lifting their heads to locate the sound. It sounded out again, echoed by multiple. Sinsey fluttered up to over in Rozzie’s view, crests dropped in his version of a frown. “That sounds like… birds?” Suddenly, there was the sound of dozens of beating wings, and weird, mutated birds flooded the clearing. Webwings, Rozzie registered, just as a duo dove at her. She ducked out of the way, then twisted around and scratched at one with her claws. Panicked, she looked around the field for her new friends. She spotted them soon enough as she pinned on of the birds to the ground. Rhiderch was holding her own, twisting and dancing around in the air, too agile for any of the birds to catch. “Keep moving!” Rozzie yelled, pouncing onto another. “They have terrible depth perception!” Sinsey screamed. Rozzie didn’t even know Faes could scream. Immediately, she turned to move towards him, slashing away any of the creatures that got in her way. She didn’t see him at first, his small form hidden by the flurry of feathers, but eventually her gaze locked onto him. His wings beat furiously as he fought to stay in the air, the runes along his side glowing dimly as he desperately threw small bursts of magic at the Webwings threatening him. “GET AWAY FROM HIM!” Rozzie shrieked. The group of birds froze. Then, strangely, they all backed away from the Fae. Rozzie blinked, confused, but wasted no time in dispatching the Webwings with her claws and fangs. She took a moment to catch her breath, panting, before turning and holding up her claws to Sinsey. He all but collapsed into them, looking up at her gratefully. Sen hopped up to the two off them, cooing lightly in delight as it saw its handler was okay. “Nice charmspeak,” Sinsey said weakly. “What?” Sinsey tilted his head. “You influenced them just by using your voice. It’s a form of Shadow magic. Albeit, yelling isn’t the most common way to do it, but…” Rozzie sat back on her haunches, staring at her small companion dumbly. “I didn’t know I could do that.” Rhiderch’s high-pitched voice broke out across the clearing. She was… giggling? Rozzie narrowed her eyes and let Sinsey climb onto her shoulder. Cautiously, the Mirror crept across the clearing, slowly poking her head around the tree she’d hear Rhiderch’s voice come from behind. Her eyes widened in surprise, not expecting the sight she was seeing. The Spiral was in fact giggling, curling around and hugging a Webwing as if it were a stuffed animal. The Webwing for its part seemed confused, but… not entirely opposed as to what was happening. Rozzie took in its size and color, racking her brain to understand why it was so familiar. “That’s the Alpha,” she stated as it clicked. “The leader.” “How do you know all this stuff?” Sinsey asked curiously. “I thought you’ve never left your lair.” “My father gave me lots of books. I’ve read through encyclopedias… a lot.” Her tail swished across the ground. “I didn’t have much else to do.” Rhiderch poked her head up from behind the Webwing Alpha, grinning at Sinsey. “This guy’s really cute! Can I keep him?” “Uh, I don’t know… His friends did try to kill us...” She ignored him, continuing, “I’m gonna call him Raoul!” Sinsey “sighed,” giving Rozzie a blank stare. Rhiderch and Sinsey, it turned out, didn't have many belongings to speak of. Both were ready to leave well before midday, the agreed time to leave.
