TOPIC | [RBC] The Hungry Games (DONE)
As Damek nears the Pillar, he suddenly notices the first aid camp off to the side and considers the amount of loot that may be stored there. Oh, what a quandary: to loot or not to loot?! Should he make that little detour and hope to pick up a little extra for the pot, but risk a confrontation and losing what he's got already? Or be satisfied with his takings so far and continue on to the pillar in all haste? Aaaargh, Damek hates decisions like this!!!
Thinking over recent events, he considers who he'd loot from, makes his decision .... and then the peace loving hippie wins out over the desire for more (or is it just the fear of losing anything he may already have?!) and Damek goes back to concentrating on getting to the Pillar before Pecan and Maroux.
But still... he'll always wonder if he should have looted...

DAY SIX
...in the final stretch, folks! The last several reports have been vicious, and we're down to the final three players. That Pillar's not an easy climb, though, and it isn't a safe one, either! This tower takes power to scale, and the Hungry Games have already put these dragons through the wringer and back.
But before we talk more about that, a quick glimpse into another Spectator Gift: a generous soul has given one dragon a mostly-plucked featherduster and something for which they'll just flip. And with that taken care of, let's go now to a live report of their progress for the day!
Maroux is a Wildclaw, and those wicked toeclaws of his aren't just for show. That heavy offering sack is doing his best to drag him down as he climbs up the stairs and leaps over gaps in the path, but his claws are catching in the cracks and saving him from what might be unsteady footing placements for many others. Good thing, too, because with his arms busy lugging along his food, the only other things he's got for balance are his wings!
He's starting to look a little tired now, though. It appears as though he's--yes, he's stopping to climb into a deep hole in the pillar! I remember when that piece came away ten years ago, faithful listeners; the impact could be heard for miles. He must be trying to rest without getting caught by other players. We'll have to wait and see if his strategy pays off.
Pecan has a fire in her belly now that she knows she has oodles of food items. I'm sure Earthshaker would've loved a little more variety in his diet and a lot fewer carbohydrates, but winter rations are winter rations! Her size gave her a boost, with every one of her strides equalling several of those of the other players, allowing her to pull up to the Pillar just after dawn. You'll never believe this, folks, but this is the most unconventional scaling attempt I've seen in my decade of announcing for the Hungry Games. She's gripping the top of her offering bag between her jaws and climbing up the side like a rock wall--what perseverance! What fury!
But surely she's got to be questioning her sanity at this point? I certainly am. If Pecan falls now, she'll have to start from the bottom, and Maroux is already ahead by at least a third of the tower's height--and there's no telling what'll happen to the contents of that bag! I just hope she can get to the top before her grip fails.
I thought for sure that Damek was going to try to fly the entire way up the Pillar, but the strain of that speedy flight here has taken the wind out of his sails. He's looking pretty beat, if I do say so myself. That isn't stopping him, though! This determined Skydancer won't be letting those last few rough days stop him from taking home first place and a rare blessing from Earthshaker. Slowly but steadily, he's getting up that spiraling path carved all around the Pillar, pouring more sweat than a Gaoler in the Molten Scar as he takes one step at a time. That's Earth determination for you!
But what's going to happen when he reaches Maroux's hiding spot? Will he ambush the dragon, or will he--wait--wait--I see something! There's a beehive in that crack! Maroux jumped over it earlier, but it doesn't look like this player has seen it... Watch out, Damek--!
That's it! That's it! His foot has gone in the beehive! Oh, it's terrible, folks. He's dropped his bag over the side of the Pillar in his flailing--they're swarming now--oh, I hope he's not allergic to stings--and now he's followed the bag! He's followed the bag! Damek has toppled off the Pillar! It's all over for Damek!
Never fear; our wonderful Fork has whisked him away to the safety of the medical tent with the help of a teleportation spell. He can proudly greet his fellow players with the knowledge that he managed to set foot on the Pillar.
Wow! What a morning. All we can do now is stay tuned and wait for a last showdown. Don't touch that dial--we'll be back with more Hungry Games news as soon as it's made!

Tuesday, 11/26, I will be opening signups for a Round 2, once again using the morning/evening split format. I'm going to up the knockout rate on that one to minimize the risk of running way far over the end of RBC, so be prepared for it to get rough!

As Damek reached the pillar, he was finally able to land and stretch then rest his aching wings. Unfortunately, he didn't dare rest the rest of him - he wasn't sure where the other two competitors were - I mean, that blob on the side of the Pillar couldn't be one of them could it?? - but couldn't risk stopping now, in case they were ahead of him.
He kept moving, one foot in front of the other, step by step, all of his focus now on continuing on the tortuous climb. Moving, moving, moving... then all of a sudden there was a lurch and he snapped out of his daze to find himself surrounded by an angry black buzzing cloud "What the...????". He automatically threw his front paws up and stepped back, dropping his bag as he did. Another step and he lost his footing on the edge of the path... oh no, how far had he climbed?? Could his oh so tired wings control his descent? Heeeeeeeeeeelp......
Suddenly he found himself in the medical tent he'd been eyeing off so recently. The sudden quiet and calm disoriented him for a few moments. Thankful for the peace and a little time to gather himself, he sat down to think about the last few days and start coming to terms with all that had happened before going out and meeting all the other dragons again.
Awww, so close!! So proud of my Damek!

Pecan got to the bottom of the Pillar and knew she couldn't stop to plan out a strategy. If she stopped now, she would lose the energy driving her forward. Instead, she launched herself against its rock side and started to climb, carefully gripping her offering bag in her teeth.
As minutes passed, her claws began to lose a bit of their precise grip, and she faltered slightly. Pecan knew that she had to keep her determination. Her opponents were ahead of her, and maybe they had already reached the top. Maybe all of her work was for nothing. But she had had enough of doubting herself. She was no longer a quiet dragon to underestimate. She was no longer the dragon to give up at the first sign of failure. She was one of the final players. She could make it.
Pecan took a deep breath, dug her claws into the gaps between the Pillar's stones, and renewed her previous pace, pushing herself ever upward.

Euclase waited while Beaumont went to fetch his letter. When he returned another dragon followed close behind him and greeted him. She didn’t recognize the pearlcatcher, but from her warm greeting and lack of medic’s clothes she guessed she was another player whom he’d met in the Games. Beaumont’s next words confirmed this.
“Hello! Nice to meet you now that we don’t have to be rivals,” she held out her hand to Olivine. “Euclase is a type of stone, too, you know, so we already have something in common.” The skydancer had noticed the other’s wariness when she saw her, and decided to try and dispel it quickly. No company was too large as far as Euclase was concerned.
((Do dragons shake hands? I don’t know, but it seems appropriate here.))

Maroux took care when jumping over the broken stairs in the pillar, wings flared to keep him from tipping too far to one side and plummeting off the stone. His sack was beginning to grow heavier by the moment, and he would have to rest soon lest he dropped the pack by accident.
Looking ahead, he made note of the nook he could rest in for a while. No reason letting himself get caught by someone else at this point in the game. It was a bit cramped, but he could still set the offering bag in a comfortable position beside him.
Maroux decided he would rest there for a while, a few hours at most. It wouldn't be useful to reach Earthshaker but not be able to hand over the sack, after all. Looking out at the landscape, he was grateful he didn't have a fear of heights.

Olivine perked up slightly at the mention of going outside. She hadn't been in the tent that long at all, but after so many days outdoors she was already starting to feel rather cramped. "I'd love to come stretch my wings outside, if you two don't mind me tagging along," she said to Beaumont, before she realized that Euclase was offering her hand to shake. Olivine hastily took it.
"It's nice to meet you as well," she said to the Skydancer, smiling a little. She was already starting to feel more at ease. "I've never heard of that particular stone before, which is odd. I have quite the collection at home."

NIGHT SIX: END OF ROUND 1
...strange turn of events, nothing of major interest happened anywhere on Sornieth this afternoon. Dragons everywhere are wondering whether it's just a bizarre coincidence or the fault of something much larger in action. "What if we're all part of a cosmic storybook?" asked famed philosopher Playdoh. "If the author couldn't think of anything to write down, then we wouldn't do anything worth noticing, right?" This reporter would like to counter with the following point: If you're talking about it, and I'm talking about your talking about it, then it got noticed. The lesson to be learned here is, as they say, that no news is good news!
I've just gotten word that Maroux is waking up and crawling back out of his hiding hole. Let's go to the Hungry Games for a live report on this, the last leg of the race to the top of the Pillar.
Maroux is looking refreshed and strong, taking those steps two at a time. Normally, I wouldn't advise it, but with good sleep comes a restored sense of balance, and he seems to have no problems digging in those claws again to make sure his footing is stable. It seems he hasn't got a care in the world now; if I had to bet, I'd wager he thinks nobody else has reached the Pillar yet. Don't be a fool, Maroux! Not hearing someone pass you by doesn't mean they haven't!
Speaking of other dragons passing him by, Pecan has about a quarter of the tower on him now, and it looks like she's finally too tired to keep making a sheer vertical ascent. She's carefully making her way toward the nearest section of carved path now, inching sideways instead of upward. I don't have to tell you all that it's a dangerous choice. There might not be enough cracks in the stone to help her make the trip.
She's going bit by bit--oh, that's a tricky handhold; I'm glad she got her paw into that--and that's a crumbling foothold! She's scrabbling now, trying to find another place to stabilize herself before her other leg gives out--and she's got it, she's touched another small ridge in the stone and is putting her weight into it. That was close.
Maroux faces a gap in the walkway now, and it's too big for someone his size to jump over. I've seen this gap trip up a lot of players over the years. One of them even sat down and forfeited on the spot. He's turning away from the wall now, looking out over the land--is he going to give up and jump off? Now, after all the work he put into taking out the competition? ... No! No, he's leaped out, but he's soaring in a curve that should take him in a half circle--making the turn back now--beating his wings, and up he goes--and he just makes the landing! He hasn't got far to go at this point, and there aren't many more stumbling blocks.
Pecan has just finished wriggling her way onto the path as well, and it was touch and go for a moment there. Clever work, wedging her bag in as a weight! She's got stride length advantage again, so Maroux will have to move fast if he's to steal the lead. Good thing Wildclaws are known for their strong legs!
He's pouring on the speed, sacrificing safety for the last chance at victory--any stumbling now will cost him the title--she's heard him coming up behind and is blocking the path by moving in a wide S shape--and I can't believe my eyes, folks! What a fantastic leap! He's jumped up onto Pecan's back and run along her spine--no way for her to grab him without falling--and over her head he goes, laughing! Run, Maroux! Run for all you're worth!
Oh, this is going to be a nailbiter. I'm almost afraid to watch! Only another couple of minutes left before one of them reaches the top. Pecan is around the far side now, out of sight for a moment... a long moment. Is she flagging? Has she just given up? Whatever the reason, I think she's too late. Maroux is almost to the top of the Pillar. Earthshaker's nearly within reach!
But here comes Pecan, streaking out of the clouds like an arrow! With her own bag dangling from her jaws, she's got both claws free to wrap around his--and that's exactly what she's doing. Maroux's size is no match for hers! She yanks the bag in a wide arc and--and Maroux loses his grip! She's thrown him far out into the open air, struggling to right himself as he falls! There's no way he can catch her in time.
Pecan sails the short way to the top and lands in front of Earthshaker with both offering bags! Pecan is the victor of the Hungry Games! What blessing she receives, only she knows. It isn't our place to listen in.
Wow. Wow! All my applause for Pecan--and for the other loyal Earth dragons who gave it their very best! I hear prize distribution is about to get going, so let's go to that.
That's it for round one! Thank you all so much for participating in it. <3
Signups for round two will begin in the morning, so keep your forms ready. Just as before, I'll take 12 players in the morning and 12 at night in order to give players in all time zones get a shot at being involved. There will not be a third game, so if you want in, tomorrow's your only chance!
By the way, if you have a dragon in the medical tent and want to keep them there to RP through Round 2, you're welcome to do it! The more posts, the merrier. :)
Congratulations again to Round 1's winner, Pecan!
NIGHT SIX: END OF ROUND 1
KDRT Earth News Radio wrote:
...strange turn of events, nothing of major interest happened anywhere on Sornieth this afternoon.

Beaumont brightened as the two introduced themselves, relieved that they hadn't met on bad terms during the game.
"I can't say th't I've ever heard o' euclase as a gemstone, either," Beamont agreed, "But, then 'gain m' not all that initiated with th' world o' gems. I'm guessin' it's probably a nice blueish-greenish color like you, Euclase!"
He paused a minute as the pain in his head pulsed a bit. Not willing to let himself be distracted, he shook it off--to moderate success--and continued.
"Well, shall w' find a bit o' adventure in th' great outdoors? P'raps we'll even get t' watch the last competitors scalin' the Pillar!"
@/Dragonfruiteen
@Thewarywatcher13 I had to actually google the euclase gemstone; your dragon's quite appropriately named! And here I thought I had all those blue gemstones down to memory XD
