They claim that magic is too wild and unpredictable, and anything that can be achieved through magic can be similarly done with safer, more reliable technology. An opposing group of arcane scholars and professors argue that magic is as much a part of dragon as their very soul. Additionally, they no longer lose life points by fleeing (as they view it as helping get their teammates to safety) and must flip a coin when fainting in the Coliseum. On a result of heads, they lose the usual 1 life point; on a result of tails, they only lose ½ of a life point. Aslesa had always been ahead of her, both in school and later in the workplace, and in the faraway place of seniority, she'd always struck Brier as something amazing. She'd always believed that if anything could be done, Aslesa could do it. If Aslesa said it, it must be right. So when Aslesa took up arms against the city's magic users and declared it something dangerous, Brier was quick to believe her and eager to follow. But. But when Aslesa fell. When she crawled away from the fight to the others waiting to carry her to the infirmary, the voice that'd been mumbling in the back of Brier's mind since this whole thing began grew louder. [i]What if...?[/i] As Brier continued the fight, taking revenge without any real fire behind it. [i]What if she's....?[/i] As they made their way home, tired and bruised from fighting a battle she could no longer say she believed in. [i]Wht if she's wrong?[/i] Brier thought of all her friends who'd study magic, loved it, reveled in it. As she packed her things, she remembered all the stories of magical miracles, of all the lives that had been saved by a quick tongue with a push of magic. And as she stole away in the night, she felt a fire burning within her as surely as if someone had spelled it there. She wasn't able to escape unnoticed, and as much as the strike of Twilight's claws hurt, it was the betrayal in his eyes that hurt her the most. But she couldn't turn back now, not with her mind made and her choices for once in her life made by her and her alone. ----- Petalpuff didn't like to lose. He had joined Magic with a mind that the citizens of Lorehaven would never let go of their precious arcana. After all, what did a hunk of metal shot through with electricity have against the raw, natural power of magic? But in his first week within the faction, he came to realize something. Magic's leader was soft. Weak. Weak leaders don't win wars. With that realization, it wasn't a difficult choice for Petalpuff to leave. He wasn't about to be dragged down by a losing faction, and if he got to watch Magic's too soft leader suffer the harshness of reality from the top? Well, that was just a bonus.
