Mother Knows Best A 100 Hatchling Challenge THIS STORY HAS BEEN CANCELLED Due to various personal reasons and a decision of me wanting to rework my shadow clan lore, I've decided to cancel this story. It was loads of fun to do, don't get me wrong, but I just don't have the energy to keep writing it. Feel free to read it still, if you want! But I won't be updating this any more. Due to this, she was constantly treated as if she were a child and she was not allowed to become a Keeper. Soon, she got tired of her treatment and decided to leave home. She wanted to prove that she could be the strong dragon she always wanted to be. After a long time of traveling, Kitty eventually stumbled upon The Tangled Woods. She was a little creeped out by it, since surely The Shade was rampant here. But still wanting to prove her worth, she went into the dark place and came upon Moonspirit's Clan. Here, there was quite the mix of dragons. There were so many different species here, she had a hard time keeping track of them all. She was amazed by this place and instantly fell in love. The hustle and bustle of clan life and bartering dragons was just amazing to her, and not at all like former home. She settled quickly into this welcoming and warm place, finally feeling like she actually fit in. But Kitty couldn't help but feel like she was missing something. Maybe it was her previous Gaoler lifestyle and wanting to be a Keeper… but she couldn't really keep The Shade trapped in this place. But staring at the hatching grounds and nursery gave her an idea. Why not watch over the little ones? And while she was at it, have some little ones herself. Surely having a few nests here and there wouldn't hurt…. Right? “Don’t you think it’s weird how many dragons come to the clan just to have nests?” Kitty glanced down at the nests full of eggs. They didn’t exactly have the best of upkeeps, and seemed to be mostly abandoned. Sometimes she saw their parents come down to keep them warm. But usually, it was herself taking care of all the lone eggs. After she came into Moonspirit’s Clan, she kind of self declared it as her job. There was simply too many hatchlings running around without parents, or parents who simply didn’t care. “It’s alright little ones, I’m here for you.” She purred towards the largest nest of 5 eggs, gently curling around them. A lot of them were very large compared to her size, making it hard to cover all of them. The glowing eggs felt cool under her fur and it tugged at a sort of maternal instinct inside her. A part of her kind of wished that these eggs were actually hers, and that she didn’t have to worry about giving away the hatchlings away once they grew up. That was silly of course, she had all the children she needed taking care of the nursery. “Excuse me.” Kitty was awoken by an upset Bogsneak. Apparently, she had accidentally fallen asleep while sitting on the eggs, and their parent wasn’t exactly happy about that. He started down at her, annoyedly flicking his tongue. “Oh, sorry.” She quickly scrambled off the nest, careful not to disturb the eggs too much. She was met with a small tailwhip from the other dragon on her way off, a sort of warning to keep away. Kitty looked back at the jerk, a disapproving glare on her face. “I was just trying to keep them warm. Eggs need a lot of attention, you know.” “Take care of your own eggs then, and leave mine alone.” He met her with a growl, teeth bared. The bogsneak was trying to be intimidating, but he wasn’t really scary. Just annoying, but not worth her time. So off she went, to clear her head. Kitty found herself going towards the small marketplace of the Clan, full of dragons trying to sell their wares. She saw a few faces that she recognized, but nothing of real interest. If anything, she couldn't stop thinking about what that Bogsneak said. Take care of your own eggs. But she didn't have any eggs, let alone a mate. She hadn't run into a dragon she was really interested, and wasn't sure if she ever would. Her ears dropped and her head sagged. She stared down at her talons, sadly walking along. She wouldn't ever have her own nest full of eggs. Kitty kept walking silently, until a bundle of blue feathers accidentally collided with her head on. The two tumbled out of the denser part of the marketplace, flopped over in an awkward mess of wings and tails. Kitty sat dazed and confused at what happened. She glanced up to see a very concerned Skydancer looking down at her. "Oh my- are you okay???" His voice had a sort of melodic tone, almost sounding a song of despair. "I'm terribly sorry about that, I was just trying to practice flying!" "Practice flying ...?" Kitty groggily got up, tilting her head ever so slightly. She examined the new dragon slightly. Nothing seemed really off about his wings. Actually, his wings were absolutely gorgeous, if she really thought about it. "Aha, yeah… I never really learned how to at home. I want to learn how before I stand in front of a deity." He shamefully shuffled his wings, snapping them shut and looking towards the ground. "It probably sounds silly, I know." "Doesn't sound silly at all. I don't know how to fly myself." Kitty stretched opened her own wings, and glanced at them. They were big and useless as far as she was concerned. "Really? O-oh, but you're a Tundra… it's not shameful if you don't fly...." He looked almost hopeful, and then looked down in shame again. Seemed like he was pretty upset. For some odd reason, that pulled at Kitty's heart. She didn't want to see him upset like that. "Hmm. Maybe you could teach me then?" She gave him a gentle smile, trying to reassure him. He looked up at her, with an absolutely flabbergasted expression. "I've always wondered what it would feel like." "Really?? You would let me do that?" That musical tone instantly lifted, he seemed absolutely delighted by that idea. "I know a great place for take off! Come on! Oh, and my name's Riverfall, by the way!" Riverfall darted off at full speed towards the small hill near the large clearing in the trees. He was surprisingly fast for having skinny legs, but not quite as fast as Kitty herself. She easily caught up to him, using her strong leg muscles to the fullest advantage. This seemed to make the Skydancer push himself even harder. “My name’s Kitty!” She shouted, keeping up the fast pace. “Nice to meet you, Riverfall!” “You as well! Careful you don’t eat my dust!” The rest of the morning was spent in awkward flight lessons. Riverfall was better at flying than he let on, but Kitty was heavily struggling. Her wings simply didn’t have the right muscles for flight, and she couldn’t quite get a good liftoff. Not that she minded, she never grew up with this sort of thing. Flight just wasn’t something she could do. “Wow, you’re absolutely terrible at flying.” Riverfall giggled, stretching open those gorgeous wings again. “It’s kind of cute, actually. Thank you practicing with me though. I do have to ask, what originally brought you to this Clan?” “Oh well I… I just wanted a new life is all. I originally came here to try and prove my abilities to my parents, and well.” Kitty looked down, her face flushed in slight embarrassment. “I wound up becoming the caretaker for the nursery. I don’t have any eggs of my own though, but I would love to have some one day.” “Oh. Well uh… Do you have a mate?” Riverfall ducked his head, blushing furiously. "I don't. I haven't really found anyone and I'm usually too busy in the nursery. What are you suggesting?" Kitty looked at him, puzzled. She sat down and tilted her head. "I still plan on devoting my life to a god, but would you like to have a nest with me?" ----------------- Kitty found herself happily curled around a new clutch of 2 eggs. One that she could actually call her own, instead of having to jealously look at the other full nests. She tiredly looked up at Riverfall, who had a sort of goofy proud smile on his face. "I can't believe these are actually mine. I never thought I would ever get to have hatchlings before I moved on." He gently nuzzled one of the eggs affectionately, pushing it closer into Kitty's warm fur. She warmly chuckled at his remark, shaking her head slightly. "I can't believe you were actually serious on your offer." She remarked, giving Riverfall a small lick on the nose. "Who asks to have a nest with someone they just met? You, apparently. Not that I mind though…" "Aha, yeah. It really is an awkward question." Riverfall started blushing again, his gaze looking the other way from Kitty. "But Exalted aren't allowed to have hatchlings, as there's too many that get sent to the gods on a daily basis. So I'm glad I was able to have a nest before I go." "That's so sad…. But I understand." Kitty sadly rested her head on one of the eggs, remembering a long time ago how one of the Gaoler Sentries mentioned there were too many children being sent to the Fortress. They must have been talking about The Exalted. "When do you plan on leaving?" She had to ask. She had to know. Her large white eyes looked up at Riverfall, silently pleading that he wouldn't leave. "....Soon after the eggs hatch." Next --> [rule] Whew! Quite the long intro, but we made it! Oh, wow this is amazing storytelling! Would you mind adding me to the pinglist?
Kitty was rudely awakened by the sound of a loud CRACK. She had fallen asleep next to her eggs for the night, because the chilly breeze was threatening snow. She wanted the eggs to keep warm, after all. She lifted her head to see what was going on. In the dawn light, she wasn't able to make much out except… Oh. OH MY GODS, THEY WERE HATCHING. Kitty clambered out of the nest to get a better look. One egg was pipping and the other wobbling like a broken stool. She had to find Riverfall FAST. So she dashed for the entrance of the nursery, frantically looking to see who was outside. Strangely enough, it was a Gaoler dragon. Kitty didn't recognize them at all, but they seemed to be walking in a quiet sort of way. Not for long though. "HEY YOU!" Kitty shouted, which caused the other dragon to jump. They looked at her in surprise. "I need you to do me a favor! It's urgent!" "Wh- me? What do you need me for?" They nervously glanced around, almost as if there was something scary in the camp. "I need you find a dragon named Riverfall! He's a shiny white skydancer with blue wings that have eye spots." She was panting and had to take a quick breath. She glanced back at the nests. "He should be in the Traveler's Dens! Tell him his eggs are hatching!" "Oh, uh. Yes ma'am!" Without another word, the Gaoler ran off. Kitty desperately hoped that they would be able to do the job. But first, her eggs! She ran back to her nest to see that both eggs were pipping now, the first one rocking violently. It was going to hatch at any moment, and she so wanted Riverfall to see this. Oh please, Icewarden, let that odd black and brown Gaoler be able to find him. "Kitty! What's going on?!" That familiar musical tone filled the nursery. Riverfall exasperatedly ran into the room, all his feathers in a ruffle. The Gaoler from before was right behind him. "The eggs are hatching!" She was absolutely delighted, Riverfall was here! She looked back down at the nest. "The first one is almost out." Kitty seemed almost surprised, almost as if she was expecting something else. But that surprise melted away when the wet hatchling looked up with the prettiest purple eyes she's ever seen. "Ahbrrrp!" The baby dragon chirped, looking around wide-eyed at her new surroundings. Kitty quickly got to work and started licking at her fur, trying to dry the new fuzzy coat. Had to keep the hatchling warm, after all. It was cold out there. "She's beautiful." Riverfall warmly chuckled, gently nuzzling his child's head. "She looks a lot more like you if anything." Kitty glanced up from her cleaning, to see that he was right. Her new child had all of her genes, even if it was hard to tell in the fluff mess she had made her to be. But there was in fact two eggs, and she looked up just in time to see another hatchling tumble out. Another Tundra girl was hatched, this time having a white striped coat and bright blue wings. She also had all of Kitty's genes, but this little one had more of Riverfall's colors. She liked that. "Welcome to the world, little ones." Kitty purred, then starting to clean the second hatchling. She felt like she could actually fly with all of the love filling her heart. She couldn't believe these were actually her children. She made these! “What should we name them?” “Oh, uh. Well I’m actually really terrible at names.” Riverfall ducked his head blushing. He had that same nervous expression that he did the same day he asked Kitty to have eggs with him. “What if we name that black and white one uhh…. Cloudy? Star? Cloudystar?” “Cloudystar? Gods, you really are bad at names." Kitty giggled and shook her head. She looked towards the black hatchling, who was curiously waddling towards the strange Gaoler. She didn't want to name her child something like Cloudystar. But that did give her an idea… “What about Nightfall?” “Nightfall... That’s a perfect name!” Riverfall seemed to approve, a big ol’ grin appearing on his face. He didn’t seem to notice that she was named after him. “Oh! Oh! I think I have one for the little white girl. What do you think about Stream?” “Stream is a lovely name. I think it fits her well.” Kitty looked towards the newly named Stream. The little one didn’t make a noise, but she seemed to acknowledge her new name. "They're absolutely gorgeous, Kitty." Riverfall gave a small, sad sigh. "I… I don't want to leave them, but I have to." The reminder that Riverfall was going to become an Exalted hit Kitty like a bag of rocks. She desperately looked up at him with a pleading expression. How could she have forgotten that? "Please don't go." The words slipped out of her mouth by accident. She just wasn’t ready for this yet. "I'm sorry but… yesterday I got a summoning letter from The Shadowbinder. I don't have a choice anymore." He sadly gave Kitty a small comforting lick. She could tell how much this hurt. It was hurting both of them. “But what about the children? Nightfall and Stream will grow up without knowing you.” Kitty shook her head. Why was she trying to argue this? She knew since she laid these eggs that Riverfall would leave her. "Maybe I could help." The Gaoler, who had remained silent until this point, spoke up. "I mean, help take care of the hatchlings when Riverfall leaves. Unless you don’t me want to! Uhm." “What’s your name? I didn’t catch it when you shoved me towards the nursery.” Riverfall tilted his head at the stranger. Kitty looked up at them as well, just now noticing something odd about this Gaoler. Their eyes were wrong. One was green and the other was red, which shouldn’t be exactly possible. Especially considering how elements affected eye color. “My name’s Reuben. I’m. I’m just me.” They looked away, as if they were hiding something in their words. That was odd. But then again, it felt odd meeting a Gaoler all the way out here. Kitty would have to talk to them later. “Kitty, what do you think?” Both dragons were staring at her now. She didn’t entirely know what to say. She glanced down at her hatchlings, one of which was trying to climb Reuben. The large Gaoler carefully lowered their head towards her, having a sort of carefulness to their behavior. Hmm…. “I won’t make you help me. Just like how I can’t force Riverfall stay.” She said that last part with a mild bite of sorrow and her voice was starting to crack. She continued on anyways. “But if you want to help, that is your choice.” ----------------- The goodbye to Riverfall was bittersweet. Kitty wasn’t able to escort him to The Forum Of The Obscured Crescent, since this journey was usually for one to take alone. Standing at the edge of the camp leading into the woods, she gazed into his gentle eyes one last time. This would probably be goodbye forever. Even if Kitty were to become an Exalted herself, the chances of her going to the Shadowbinder wasn’t entirely guaranteed. The dominance game was tricky like that. “Take care of yourself out there. May the Shadowbinder treat you well.” Kitty quietly whispered into Riverfall’s ear. She was trying really hard not to cry. None of this was fair, but such was the way of life. “I will. You take care of yourself too, Alright?” Riverfall’s usual singsong voice was unusually very quiet and sad. Seemed like this was rough on him too. “And make sure to tell the girls how much I love them. They are the greatest thing I could have asked for before serving Lady Shadowbinder. I love you.” And then he was gone. Kitty blinked through a few tears, turning around to see both of her hatchlings clambering around on Reuben’s back. It seemed like the little ones took a liking towards the gentle giant. She let out a small chuckle. "I don't know if I have a choice anymore." Careful to not hit either hatchling with their horns, Reuben looked towards their back. "I think they like climbing me too much. That's not an issue, is it?" "Not at all." A small smile crept onto Kitty's face. The ridiculous sight of Reuben covered in hatchlings made her feel a little better. "I'm glad I'm not doing this alone at least. Just don't hurt my children." "I won't. But I will have to leave camp before sundown every day." They made a few circles in the dirt with a claw. Those odd eyes were staring off in the distance. "I'm not exactly supposed to be here." "Why is that?" Kitty tilted her head. Reuben wasn't dangerous, were they? "I'm a Lawless dragon." Kinda disappointed I didn't get a bab with peacock, but oh well! Also Nightfall and Stream will be available for grabs when they grow up! They just have to stop using Reuben as a jungle gym first lol (Also note: Reuben is a trans dragon and uses he/him pronouns. Kitty doesn't know that yet, so I'm using the narration to reflect that)
Kitty was rudely awakened by the sound of a loud CRACK. She had fallen asleep next to her eggs for the night, because the chilly breeze was threatening snow. She wanted the eggs to keep warm, after all.

She lifted her head to see what was going on. In the dawn light, she wasn't able to make much out except…

Oh.

It's urgent!"

"Wh- me? What do you need me for?" They nervously glanced around, almost as if there was something scary in the camp.

"I need you find a dragon named Riverfall! He's a shiny white skydancer with blue wings that have eye spots." She was panting and had to take a quick breath. She glanced back at the nests. "He should be in the Traveler's Dens! Tell him his eggs are hatching!"

"Oh, uh.
