Even the firelight of the beacon and its lanterns failed to pierce the misty fog. Eerie skrieks could be heard within the Knowledge District Wilds and beyond the borders of the city and strange shadows lurked in the corner of everyone’s eyes. The Night of the Nocturne had arrived. Huddled within the palace, Queen Age was determined to keep out the dark. Extra lanterns had been lit, and the light dragons expended their magic bringing glowing lights of all shapes and colours to the corridors and chambers. The energy of the royal family was rising as they prepared for the great feast Queen Age was hosting in lieu of the yearly ball. “Are you sure we should be putting so much energy into the feast?” Juliette asked as she followed Age down the corridor. The queen was moving at a surprisingly brisk pace. “Jett’s going to make a move under the cover of this night, I just know it. And Ragna says the shade is stronger than ever-” “I haven’t forgotten, Juliette,” Age responded, not looking at the wildclaw. “But this darkness is precisely the reason we need this feast. Spirits are at an all time low, no one knows what’s going on in the Black Market, we know Jett is planning an attack. Continuing to celebrate in the face of such adversity is a sign of strength in and of itself.” “I just don’t want you to lose sight of Jett. He’s grown since he last took over the kingdom, trust me,” Juliette reminded her. “But I agree. Windkeep Tower is always good at bringing light to the darkest of nights. They know a thing or two about not losing heart in adversity.” Age cracked a smile at the wildclaw. “I’ve enjoyed having you at my side. If the stories are anything to go by, you have your mother’s wisdom. Keep an eye out, and if the danger is too great, let me know. I’ll listen.” As the feast approached, Juliette found no sign of attack, so the festivities continued as planned. Originally, the feast had been planned for only the royal family and their friends, but as the bloodline had spread so far that encapsulated pretty much everyone outside of the Black Market. The whole city made it out to the great dining hall. It was a much more cozy fit than the large ballroom, but in the glowing candlelight, all the familiar faces were a comforting sight. Even Lucian and Cecily made it out, though they sat awkwardly to the side, Cecily casting glances at Bahat when she thought he wasn’t looking. Bahat was trying to ignore her as he delved into conversation with Bohrium, Boo and Bridget. Cantarelli left the table early to go for a walk. As she wandered the corridors, she found herself running into Dusk. “You feel it too?” He asked his mother, looking antsy. “This is a special year for us nocturnes. We came to be on a year like this, cloaked in darkness and mimicking everything in sight,” Cantarelli nodded. “It’s natural that our kind is restless right now.” “Do you hear that?” Dusk asked. “There’s all sorts of strange noises around right now. What else do ya expect a bunch of newborn nocs to be doing?” Cantarelli grinned. “No, but this one sounds closer, inside the palace walls,” Dusk perked up. Cantarelli cocked her head and listened. Her son was right. There was a nocturne hatchling within the palace, and they were very close. “We have to find them, before they cause too much trouble,” Dusk pointed out, moving hurriedly. “Relax, hatchlings are made for trouble! Or have you forgotten what it’s like to be wild and free now that you are a father yourself?” Cantarelli’s eyes twinkled as she teased the younger nocturne. Just as she spoke, the pair of nocturnes rounded the corner to see a swinging chandelier. Cantarelli didn’t spend much time in the palace, but she could swear she had never seen such a fixture before. As she drew nearer, she could make out a small dragon swinging from the chandelier, which appeared to be looking at the newly arrived nocturnes. “Oh why hello there, darlin’,” Cantarelli grinned up at the child. “Why hello there, darlin’,” The hatchling mimicked. “Where did you come from?” Dusk asked, looking curiously at the swinging chandelier. “You come from,” The hatchling repeated. “What are we going to do with him?” Dusk whispered, looking at his mother. “We can’t just leave him here with that - thing.” “Oh, I think your father and I may be able to give him a home. After all, we do have another little one on the way, and the poor little thing is all on its own,” Cantarelli grinned. “Wait-” Dusk stopped, clearly processing what his mother was saying. “You had another nest?” “Just a single egg,” Cantarelli admitted. “Which is why i think this little dear will fit in nicely. You had your uncles to run around with. Your little brother or sister doesn’t have anyone, and neither does this one here.” Dusk cracked a smile and looked up at the hatchling. “Now we just need to get her down.” “Get her down,” The hatchling mimicked, giggling to herself. As she spoke, the chandelier fell from the ceiling and crashed to the ground. Dusk and Cantarelli rushed over to check and see if she was alright, only to find the child rolling on the floor in fits of laughter. The chandelier seemed unharmed as well. It gave itself a shake and scuttled along the floor, dragging its chain behind it. “A mimic,” Dusk pointed out, shaking his head. “What is going on!” “Welcome to Night of the Nocturne, my dear. It’s a wild ride,” Cantarelli grinned, scooping up the child. “Now, lets get this little one a little grub for her stomach. She must be starving, and we can’t have anyone going hungry with a feast going on. Even here, she could feel the joy buzzing from the castle, contrasting harshly with the seriousness of the Black Market. They were gearing up for battle. Jett was ready to attack any day, and everyone was feeling the strain and anticipation of the coming attack. “What are you looking at, my dear?” Jett asked, his voice smooth as honey as he moved beside his mate. “Don’t worry about them. Let them have their fun now. We’re on the winning side. Soon, all they have will be ours.” Scoril looked at the wildclaw, grateful he couldn’t read her emotions she way she could with his. She was beginning to have her doubts again. Besides, despite his sweet words, she could tell that he was distracted. He had barely even stopped in to visit their children since they hatched apart from to check in on their training. The skydancer turned to look at Kahlil and Kala. The two skydancer hatchlings were playing together, competing over some toy. They were smart and brave and strong, and she wished Jett were around more to see all of that. Why was she doubting him? Of course he was busy. He had a kingdom to seize. That didn’t happen overnight. It took careful coordination and planning. Still, there was a strange light behind his eyes, and something seemed off about him, like something was blocking his emotions. “They deserve the world, and I’m going to give it to them,” Jett murmured. He turned to look at the palace, and Scoril followed his gaze. “We’ll let them enjoy this night of feasting and fun. This is technically my Christmas update, though it's a couple days late! Special thanks to @Disillusionist for the noc egg! It's a Christmas tradition of mine to hatch a noc egg every Christmas, so I figured that should carry on in the Pinkerlocke, even without the familiar pull. We are at 50 dragons now, so that clan is getting pretty big! I've made a NOTN rule for the Coli that if I get any chests while in there with pinkerlocke dragons, and I get any scrolls or eggs from said chests, they are immediately incorporated into the locke, no pulls needed, but unfortunately none of my pinkerlocke battles have yielded any chests yet.

A little hatchling swinging (presumably upside-down, since That's What Nocturnes Do) from a chandelier and saying "Why hello there, darlin'" is just. So cute [emoji=nocturne laughing size=1]

This was a good one. I was bouncing on the razor's edge of excitement the whole time, because Night of the Nocturne is my favorite of the holidays, and I couldn't wait to see how you handled it in your lore. I wonder about those mimics, because I smell trouble.

@Petall Happy holidays! [emoji=coatl love] I saw this update while I was away on vacation and have only now just gotten the chance to read it. I love how the chapter started; such rich imagery for NotN, especially with Age and the others doing their best to keep the palace lit. I think Age has the right idea: a party's usually a good way to boost morale and keep spirits high. Ouch, Cecily and Bahat are not doing well tonight. =/ But I was elated to see that the egg I gave you hatched into such a fine baby. She's gorgeous!! [emoji=heart] I hope she serves your clan and stories well! Ah, Scoril, I feel bad for her. Chasing after a guy whose dreams eclipse everything else that should matter. Very pretty kids, though. Happy NotN! *flicks Jett on the nose*
