Jett collapsed as the smoke billowed towards him. He had run as far as his legs would carry him. He was in agonizing pain all over, and he could feel his body failing. He lifted his head, ready to see the smoke billowing over him, but it had stopped, forming a wall.
He was locked out of his kingdom forever.
He didn't have the energy to mourn this fact, as a dizzying darkness threatened to overtake him. He gave into it, falling into the blanketed void. His heart stopped, his breathing ceased, and Jett was no more.

The corridors were strangly empty, considering Ulf was leading an attack on the palace. Larkin and Juliette followed behind him. There had been an explosion of nature magic from the palace in the early hours of the morning, and it was time to finish Jett off, with or without the final gem guardian.
They rounded a corner, and Juliette pulled ahead, bursting into the throne room.
Jett wasn't there, instead a wiggling spiral sat cheerfully on the throne.

"Kip, get off that throne!" Another voice roared from behind the new arrivals. They moved to make way for the newcomer, and turned to see Kass storming in.

"I've already taken down one idiot, I don't want to have to take down another as well," the coatl growled.
Sheepishly, the spiral wriggled off of the throne and shrugged. "Worth a try," he said, before slipping out of the room with a laugh.
"There, that's my good deed of the year, I'm done here," Kass sighed. "Juliette, thank you for the employment, it's been fun, but I'm moving on to find something that's more my style. The throne is yours."
Ulf turned to stare at the wildclaw. He supposed she was the natural choice for the next leader. Age was dead, and Juliette was technically the rightful heir of Ivi. However, the wildclaw was fidgeting uncomfortably.
"But I don't want to rule," Juliette sighed. "I've seen how complicated it is, I don't know if I can deal with all the power struggles. I'm glad to help restore the legacy that my mother wanted to leave, but I'd be much happier returning to Windkeep Tower and goofing off with Thorburn while he tries to run his business." She shook her head. "The poor dear wants so badly to be some big scary black market thug, but his heart keeps getting the better of him. Do you know how many shady opportunities he gave up to help with your rebellion?"
"If it is not your desire to rule, we will not hold you here," Larkin dipped her head.
"Will you take the crown?" Ulf asked the tundra. "You run the council so beautifully, you would make an excellent queen."
"No, my place shall still be on the council. I prefer a supporting role in clan leadership, not to be the figurehead," Larkin admitted.
"Then Bahat? Or Bridget?" Ulf inquired.
"Bahat is a very good dragon, but he lacks the stomach that kingship requires. He would not turn it down, but he would be much happier without the weight of the crown on his head," Larkin explained. "And Bridget is still very much recovering from feeding so much of herself to the Shade, the poor dear. Besides, disputes over bloodline and heirship is what got us into all this mess in the first place. After almost causing the downfall of two clans, I think we should rethink how we appoint our monarchs, and move away from an heir system altogether. Everyone is eligible for the throne, and it's down to the council and the people to decide who takes the title."
"Do you have anyone in mind?" Juliette asked.
"I have a few ideas..." Larkin responded, a knowing twinkle in her eyes.

"We'll come and visit," Corinn promised. "That will be much easier now that the city is open for dragons to come and go."
"I know," Friehalt frowned. "I'm just really going to miss you."
"And we're going to miss you too," Kael smiled sadly, moving in to give her a hug. "You'll look out for Landon, right?"
"Oh, I think he's going to do just fine," Friehalt said. Just as she spoke, she heard his voice echo across the entry to the observatory, followed by the squeal of two hatchlings.

"I am, aren't I?" Friehalt grinned. "I guess it's time that we all get to pursue what we want, now that we don't have to fight for survival."
"Hey, I've got to go say goodbye to my parents. Come on, let's go see them off," Landon told the hatchlings.
"Alright," Iari, the older of the two, huffed.
"You know, I'm going to travel when I'm big!" Her sister Ifor puffed out her chest. "I'm going to travel, and I'm going to learn magic!"
"Yeah?" Landon smiled. "You're going to be great at that!" He trotted up to his parents. "You off?"
"Yeah, it's time," Corinn exchanged a look with her mate. "Are you sure you don't want to come?"
"Nah, we've got a kingdom to rebuild. We may have a new king, but there's still lots of work to do," Landon said sadly. "But you'll write?"
"Of course," Kael said. "This is an exciting new world, and now the Forgotten Kingdom is open to it again. We'll be seeing you again before you know it."

Fallstar and Solstice were out of breath by the time that the smoke stopped its pursuit. They watched in horror as it formed a wall between them and the city they had grown up in.
"What if Jett's still in there?" Fallstar exclaimed. "We need to go in and help him!"
Solstice simply nodded her agreement.
The two made a move to step through the smoke into the city, but they found that they were unable to pass through it. It was as solid as a stone wall, and the smoke was too thick to see anything through.
"Perhaps there's a weak point," Solstice suggested, taking the lead to walk the newly created border.
The pair walked for hours, and the wall remained as strong as ever. Every so often, they would shoot their shade magic into it, but either their shade magic was severely weakened after the final gem guardian attack, or this was magic more powerful than they could combat. It had taken all their strength to hold onto their magic as the Shadow magic overtook the Shade.
Just then, Fallstar stumbled over something. She looked down to see the body of her king.
"Well, there goes that," Solstice sighed. "I guess it's time to admit defeat and find our place elsewhere." She kicked off into the air. "You coming?"
Fallstar shook her head. "I want to give him the burial he deserves."
"Suit yourself," Solstice shrugged, and she disappeared into the darkness of the Tangled Wood.
Fallstar stood over the body of the king she had served with every breath. Still, there was one thing left that she could give him.
Taking a deep breath, she placed her hands on him, and channeled all of her remaining Shade magic into the wildclaw. She didn't have much, but what she had she would give him. Her body shuddered as it drained itself of her life force, the Shade taking everything it could get. Eventually, she collapsed with exhaustion, passing out.
Moments later, Jett's eyes opened. He felt the weight of a large dragon upon him, and he wriggled out to see Fallstar, dead. She must have given her life to revive him. Loyal to the very end.
Jett grinned, and looked down at his hands. Shade magic tingled at his fingertips. Oh, how he had missed it. With his signature smirk, Jett disappeared into the darkness, leaving behind the body of his most devoted follower. He had work to do.

I'm going to have about a week buffer room before starting my next pinkerlocke to sort out all the dragons and prep for my next story, so the pinkerlocke dragons will be up for grabs for about a week.
