@Dynami

Yeah, Khepri was definitely one of my more unfortunate characters. He could never seem to catch a break!

Thanks for sharing! It's interesting to see everyone's predictions and why they make them!

A handful of dragons had been selected to stay behind and protect those who remained, and both Hermann’s parents and Landon’s parents had been insistent they stayed behind. The bogsneak knew full well it was a move to keep the both of them out of danger, as the only thing here to protect was a hatchling guarded by his fierce mother, but Hermann wasn’t troubled. She had decided to use this as an excuse to keep Hackett out of danger. “But I have to get out there!” Hackett whined. “Kestrel is out there!” “Yes, but Kestrel asked you to stay behind,” Landon pointed out. The guardian had had a very brief opportunity to connect with his charge while she delivered the news of the attack on Lester’s family, but the spiral had seemed too distracted to pay him much mind. “It’s better if we stay here,” Hermann agreed. “Kestrel knows what she’s doing. You’d just get in the way and cause more danger. You can’t exactly sneak.” “But I have to protect her,” Hackett growled. “It’s my one duty in life!” “Charge issues?” A voice sounded from down the hall and immediately Hackett spun to growl at the newcomer. Hermann and Landon turned more slowly to see a wildclaw sauntering towards them. “I’ve seen it all. Back home, we had a lot of guardians on their search stopping in. You hear a lot, working in a tavern,” Juliette smirked. “My aunt runs one in the Windswept Plateau. What you need it sometime else to protect, to occupy your attention.” “Come again?” Hackett looked utterly offended. “We need Ragna for the fight. She has one of the gem guardians, which are Jett’s only weakness. However, we both know she’s not going to leave unless she knows her son will be absolutely safe. The three of you look like strong dragons, why don’t you take up the cause? It doesn’t look like you are doing much here anyways,” Juliette shrugged. “We can do that!” Landon looked excited to be able to contribute in some way. Hermann smiled. The gaoler hatchling was cute, and she loved the idea of spending time with him. There was something about hatchlings that made her feel all warm inside. “I guess, if that’s the least that I can do,” Hackett sighed. “Come on, let’s go.” Now all that was left to do was to convince Ragna to leave her precious son in the care of other dragons, in the midst of a war. This was not going to be an easy task. His body was weakening, and the Shade within him was fading fast. He wasn’t sure how much more of this that he’d be able to take. Solstice and Fallstar were covering him, protecting him, but they were weakened too. All three of them were powerless against the gem guardians. Still, he knew that they would stand by him until the end. Just then, the shadow of a pearlcatcher was cast down the alley, and Jett cowered, hoping not to be seen. What kind of king was he, that he feared his own subjects? He was repulsed by himself, but he knew he had to do everything in his power to stay alive. The pearlcatcher pulled nearer, and his identity was revealed “King Jett?” The pearlcatcher looked surprised. “What are you doing out here in the cold, where anyone can find you. Come, Evika and I wish to offer you shelter. Jett immediately felt a wave of relief. Finally, he was getting some of the loyalty that he deserved. Turning to his minions, he nodded, and the three dragons followed Blackwolf into his little shop. Evika was already making tea for them when they arrived. Sitting them down, Blackwolf immediately handed them blankets and let them get settled. “Who could have foreseen this, eh?” Blackwolf smirked. “You didn’t see anything, did you?” Jett was suddenly met with a rush of suspicion. “My liege, we surely would have told you,” Evika said shyly. Jett grinned. It seemed he had not lost his charm with the ladies. “Good, it’s good to know that someone is on my side,” Jett grinned. A warm fire was crackling in the fireplace. After the harrowing day he had had, Jett was beginning to feel exhausted in the comfort of this safe haven. Perhaps he could rest and recover, let his Shade magic replenish itself… “Just sleep, your majesty,” Blackwolf cooed. “We’ll make sure that no one knows that you are here.” Comforted by the pearlcatcher’s words, Jett and his companions soon found themselves falling into a deep slumber. Jett was rudely awakened by an icy pain enveloping his body. His blood seemed to freeze in his veins, and he couldn’t even move to scream. His eyes were fixed staring up at Evika, and the fading gem guardian beside her. “You betrayed me,” Jett hissed, as soon as his jaws began to thaw enough to speak. “You betrayed your kingdom, the moment you started feeding the Shade,” Blackwolf retorted, pearl gunk beginning to ooze out of his mouth. “Oh, and while we’re at it, there is a prophecy about you. You shall only fall by the daughter of the cursed city’s first king.” “Now run,” Evika’s gaze was icy cold. “The blast will have alerted every other gem guardian carrier to your location.” Not even bothering to check if Solstice and Fallstar were following, Jett took off into the night. If Age were to be his only downfall, he would have to take care of her first. Ragna hardly wanted to leave her son, let alone in the care of such young and inexperienced dragons, but she had a sacred duty to rid Sornieth of the Shade, and now was her chance to purge the Forgotten Kingdom of its filth. No one challenged the pair for their placement. Everyone else who could care was still caught up in battle with the other rebels, and everyone in the fight was growing weary. The city began to grow silent as the various sides slipped away to rest to gather strength to continue the battle the next day. Eventually, a loping shape appeared out of the darkness. Jett was approaching the palace on foot, too tired to fly, accompanied by a pair of weakened looking guards. Upon seeing the guard waiting for him, Jett sighed, and nodded at his minions as if to say ‘go deal with them.’ He then attempted to slip away, probably towards a less conspicuous entrance. “Not so fast,” Juliette growled, easily dodging the approaching nocturne to face. “I’ve had enough of you playing king.” Ragna in turn took on both of his advancing guards, fending them off easily in their weakened state. “It’s my birthright, something you never had the guts to take!” Jett spat. “No, Jett, you don’t understand,” Juliette sighed. “You say this is your birthright, but what are you doing to preserve what Mom and Dad built?” “How do you know what they would have wanted? You never met them!” Jett growled. “I am making this kingdom great!” “You are tearing this kingdom apart,” Juliette said, a deep sadness in her eyes. “And I know what the Clan of Resting WIngs once was, because I have met many of the dragons who once called this place home, and while they certainly had their scallywags, there were many who were noble and of good hearts. This kingdom of evil is not what Mom and Dad gave their lives to protect. You are simply destroying everything our bloodline has stood for.” “And why should I care what dead dragons think?” Jett said, glaring at his sister. “Because if you carry on this way, you’ll soon become one,” Juliette said calmly. “No, you know what? I know you and your stubborn heart, and the way you will do whatever greed desires, no matter what destruction you have to cause to get your way. There is no redemption for you, which is why I must play my part in taking you down.” “You wouldn’t do that,” Jett laughed. “Would you really take down one of your own blood?” “Jett, you have me all wrong. I am not the one obsessed with blood, you are,” Juliette shook her head. “I want to play my part in returning this kingdom to its glory, not because its blood runs in my veins, but because Mom and Dad made a sacrifice to protect me in giving me a life with Aunt India. I care about the acts a dragon commits, not what clan they are from or who their family happens to be. And if you think you can slither out of my rage because you are my brother, you are poorly mistaken.” Juliette nodded at Ragna, and she knew it was her time to act. Pushing past Fallstar and Solstice, she charged, and grasped her gem guardian in her wing. Simultaneously, the two dragons threw the gemstones at Jett, causing an explosion of lightning and earth. Both dragons were pushed back from the force of it, and Jett’s screeches rang out in the air. As the dust settled, Jett lay on the ground, badly wounded, but alive. “How many gems have you been struck with? Eight?” Ragna smirked. “Only three more, and you are a goner.” And with that, Ragna took off towards the Knowledge District. She had played her part. @Petall The opening scene of this one was great, but I LOVED Blackwolf's and Evika's scene even more. I'll admit Blackwolf impressed me; he's the NPC who's stayed in your Pinkerlocke the longest...up until the very end, in fact! I loved how they set everything up: the welcoming environment, and the dialogue that was just the right amount of deferential, not too simpering or suspicious. Then I saw the gem guardian's picture and-- *fist pump* HELL YEAH!! [emoji=ice rune] I'm so glad nobody died here! ...Well, OK, even Jett, knowing that there's still one more chapter left, and it would be so weird to have a Final Battle without a Final Big Bad. Also, holy moly, that poster. @Dynami, you are a genius!! [emoji=guardian star]

I must admit, I had way too much fun writing that whole trap! I'm so glad you enjoyed it so much! Since Blackwolf arrived with the prophecy of the darkness arriving in the clan, I figured that he should play a part in delivering Jett's downfall!

I figured that we could use a bit of a breather from all the deaths.

Really fantastic poster <3!

Nice going, Blackwolf and Evika! Clever to lure him with a false sense of security and then attack when he is at his weakest.

Jett is such a hypocrite. First of all, saying it's "his" birthright and then with the "you wouldn't take down one of your one blood?" Really? At least most of the rest are not putting up with with nonsense.
