@Petall I couldn't help laughing at Jett's intro here, because it seems that every time the heroes storm a villain's lair, the Big Bad is always, always standing at the window, brooding over the attack below. "I don't have time for this, Edna. Let me loom menacingly in peace."
His interaction with Edna gave me an interesting realization: He didn't need his underlings as weapons, but he did need them to sow strife and discord, which is what the Shade feeds on. [emoji=guardian scared] Clever!
I also read through your other comments, and I like your headcanon for the gem guardians. It does make sense! If they're made of pure energy, they can't really be destroyed, only changed.

Well that was something. :O I think you definitely did the sisters' fight justice (but you could have dragged it out for a little more haha I love reading battle scenes), and I love how Edna's finally discovered the truth and is on the right side. :D
My heart aches for the poor Gem Guardian... although it's always good to know Scoril's alive!

@Petall That's a neat lore idea. Maybe you two should make something up for that, seems interesting.
@Petall Oh my goodness, finally caught up with Locke except for the last update xD. May I be added to the pinglist please?
There are so many characters but each of them have their own part to play in the story which can be so hard to do. The scene between the sisters and mother was so heart-wrenching when the discovery came only after the fact. All in all, it is excellent writing. Nothing is black or white.
Someone kick Jett in the backside please.
And poor Scoril. All she wanted in life was to have a wonderful relationship with Jett . . . :(.

Battle scenes are still something I'm working on, they've never been my strong suit. But hopefully someday I can work my way up to longer battle scenes.

I can definitely add you to the pinglist! Thanks for your interest! Thank you for all your kind comments, I'm so glad you're enjoying it!
Also, Jett really deserves that kick.
I know :( Scoril is a dragon who's always had my heart. She's just devoted her loyalty to the wrong things.

"Mom?!" Kael stopped dead in his tracks. She could sense the sparks of suspicion coming off of him, but she knew that he'd be able to sense her own fear in return. Hopefully she could get the message across that she wasn't a threat.
"I've found Jett's weakness," Scoril panted. "It's the gem guardians. Their pure elemental magic is strong enough to combat the Shade If you shatter them, it releases enough energy to hurt him pretty badly." Her gaze fell on the wind gem guardian swirling around her son.
"And why should we trust you?" Friehalt demanded, glaring at Scoril. She flinched under her gaze.
"No, it's fine, we can trust her," Kael said softly. "Did you and Dad fall out?"
"He's been cheating on me," Scoril admitted. "I guess he never really cared for me the way that I cared for him."
Kael nodded knowingly. "You've made the right choice. Now go, hide. I know Dad doesn't take deserters lightly."
Scoril nodded graciously, and disappeared deeper into the city, pressing further and further to the city limits. She wouldn't be able to leave the kingdom, but at least she could hide far away from the action until all this was over.

Kael and Friehalt continually rushed towards the palace, eager to pass on Scoril's news to the rest of the resistance. It was difficult to navigate the city, with all of the burning buildings. The smoke burned their eyes and made it difficult to breathe.
Suddenly, a dark shape could be seen overhead. Kael looked up to see the large form of Friday banking down towards them.

"How did the jailbreak go?" Friehalt asked, rushing forward to brush muzzles with her mate once he had landed.
"Everyone is free," Friday announced. Friehalt let out a whoop of excitement at the news. "Everyone made it out alive except for Elixabete."
Friehalt's face grew solemn, and Kael could sense the sadness coming off of her. Elixa had been her aunt, and he knew she had been looking forward to getting to know her when she had been released.
"We do have some good news," Kael interrupted. The battle was still going on. There would be time to grieve later, but now it was important to keep fighting. "We can use the gem guardians to take down Jett. They weaken him if the gems shatter in a fight with him."
"Really?" Friday perked up and cast a glance back at his own gem guardian.
"Why don't you two track down Jett, I'll pass on the news to the others," Friehalt offered.
"Stay safe," Kael said affectionately, hoping that this would not be the last time he lay eyes on his friend.
"I will if you will!" Friehalt smirked.
Casting a glance at Friday, the two dragons took off into the city. The loudest shouts of battle were beginning to happen further away from the palace, though it was impossible to tell where Jett would be. As king, he would likely opt to stay away from the worst of the action.
It wasn't long before the pair caught sight of a familiar form in the darkness.

"Kael? Friday? Oh, thank goodness it's you! Jett and Kahlil are attacking the tavern. We need reinforcements," Clarissa gasped as she skidded to a halt. "It's burning pretty badly, I think Jett is going for his other daughter."
Neither Kael or Friday needed to say anything. The two followed Clarissa through the burning city towards The Siren's Call. As soon as they arrived, they could make out the shape of many dragons flying around the blaze. Some were leaving the building, but others were diving back in, which meant that some dragons were still trapped inside.
Friday picked up his pace, and Kael found himself trailing behind the larger dragon. The imperial showed no hesitation as he broke through the doors and into the tavern. Kael followed close behind him, hoping that their help would be enough.

"You monster! Haven't you taken enough from us?" Webb roared, charging for Jett. The wildclaw easily dodged out of the way.
"Oh, how touching," Jett laughed. "You know, I really have to thank you for looking after my daughter so well. It takes a special kind of coward to stoop so low as to raise another's child as you own, especially when you know Seaberry always wanted me more than she wanted you."

"You keep telling yourself that," Seaberry growled. "I wouldn't want to be with you if you were the last dragon on all of Sornieth! Webb is my mate, and you have to accept that I've chosen him over you! Now, get the hell away from our daughter! You took one of them, isn't that enough?"

"Mom? What do you mean?" Kaori squeaked. She was huddled in the corner of the room, behind Seaberry.
"You never told her? Oh, that's rich!" Jett chortled. "Kaori, honey, I'm your father."
"But Webb is my father!" Kaori insisted.
"Webb may have raised you, but he is by no means your father. I still remember that night your mother and I shared, when you and your sister came to be," Jett sighed wistfully. "Now, my child, come and join me, before your burn to death like the rest of these idiots." His voice shifted to a growl as he spat at Webb and Seaberry.
"Over my dead body!" Seaberry growled.
"Gladly!" Jett exclaimed, taking a step forward with a wicked grin on his face.

"Father? I found the other child." Kael's blood turned cold as his brother descended the stairs of the tavern, clutching a squirming spiral hatchling.
"Very good," Jett purred. "Now, you two, you have a choice to make. Hand my daughter over to me so that she may be spared the fate that is set to befall this wretched city, or I'll take your lovechild instead."
"There is no difference," Webb stood firm. "Both of them are my daughters, and you are taking neither of them." He raced forward again, this time grabbing Jett's leg in his jaw. He lifted the wildclaw in the air, bit down hard, and dropped him.
Jett was only just able to catch himself, and he stumbled slightly on his injured leg. A dark mist began to seep out of the wound, covering his leg. Kael knew what was happening, and with a sickened feeling in his stomach, he watched the mist dissipate to reveal a completely healed leg.
"You want to try that again?" Jett taunted, taking a step forward. "Kahlil? Kill the child." He tilted his head towards the young hatchling.
A delighted smirk crossed Kahlil's face, and Kael was full of rage at the sight of his younger brother's glee. Without thinking, he rushed forward to stop the other skydancer, his gem guardian's wind magic picking the hatchling up from his arms and carrying her safely to Kael's back.
"Ah, the prodigal son has returned," Jett smirked. "I was wondering when we'd be seeing you."
"You're finished," Kael said in a low growl, calling his gem guardian back to him. He clutched the gem in his talons and tossed it towards his father. The wildclaw stepped out of the way, letting it shatter at his feet instead. It had landed close enough.
There was a burst of wind magic, flowing out in all directions. It was difficult to hold his feet steady on the ground, and Kael could tell that it was feeding the fires higher, but his father's screams told him everything that he needed to know.
When the surge passed, Jett was lying in a crumpled heap, breathing heavily. With shaky legs, he got up once more and cast a knowing glare to Kahlil. The skydancer nodded and moved forward towards Kaori.
"I didn't want to do this, not to my own flesh and blood, but you leave me no choice. I'll show you what happens to those who defy me," Jett rasped, his slitted eyes following Kahlil's every move.
"You stay away from her," Seaberry spat, trying to pull herself up from where a beam had trapped her, but she was not quick enough. Kahlil reached Kaori first, and with a flash, the spiral was dead on the ground, life drained out of her.
"That does it," Webb growled, eyes alight with fire. With the strength of an emperor, he charged, catching the unsuspecting Kahlil off guard. This time, he grabbed the skydancer by the neck and snapped it, dropping Kahlil's body next to Kaori's. Then his attention turned to Jett.
"Now that you know the pain of losing a child, the time has come for you to die as well. You've ruled this clan long enough," Webb said, steadily advancing on the wildclaw.
"No, allow me," Friday said, moving to block the other imperial. It was then that Kael noticed the other gem in his hand. The skydancer closed his eyes, fully aware of what was to come.
All of a sudden, Kael was doused with a tidal wave of water. He held his breath and let the flow of the salty wave take him. When his feet found dry ground once more, he opened his eyes to see a fading gem guardian and Jett collapsed on the ground. Everyone in the scene was drenched. The fire in the tavern had gone out.
In a sudden burst of panic, Kael realized Xuxa was no longer on his back. He searched around for the hatchling, only to see her cradled in Clarissa's arms.
"Don't worry, I've got her," Clarissa said softly, bringing her forward to return her to her parents. "I'm sorry about your loss." She nodded to Kaori's now drenched body.
"Thank you, Clarissa," Seaberry said. "It's good to see you again, though I wish it were under better circumstances."
Kael watched as a small grin broke out on the mirror's face. "If we make it through this thing alive, you might be seeing a lot more of me," she grunted.
"Oh! Clarissa! I meant to mention, but your mother helped with the jailbreak," Friday said.
"She did?" The joy radiating off of her was unmistakable. It looked like the mirror was finding her place at last.
Kael was so caught up in the conversation that he failed to notice Jett finding his feet again.
"It'll take more than that to do me in!" Jett growled, kicking off into the air. Tendril's of Shade smoke enveloped him, though Kael could tell it was greatly weakened by the recent attacks.
Kael took off to follow his father, eager to make sure that he didn't slip away, but the skydancer found himself pushed back by a burst of Shade magic. He tumbled to the ground, blinded. Once he opened his eyes again, his father was nowhere to be seen, and he swore.
"He may have gotten away, but he is not winning this war," Webb growled. "I can't stand by and let this tyrant control the kingdom any longer. Seaberry and I will fight by your side, for our family."
"Thank you," Kael nodded, a new weight settling in his chest. This battle was far from over.

If anyone wants to claim either Kahlil or Kaori, you have until 23:59 FR Time tomorrow (Saturday) to do so.
@Petall Wow, now that was action-packed! I'm relieved to see Scoril got away safely. Poor girl, she did make some mistakes, but I can't really hold them against her.
The scene at the inn was so intense. I'm heartbroken that Kaori had to die. Webb and Seaberry have already been through so much! [emoji=guardian sad] Having Kahlil die does even out the scales somewhat. I really liked seeing things from Kael's POV here, btw. He's always been in a really complicated position, given his parentage and what was expected from him.

Please check the spelling of my name when pinging me: @Disillusionist. Thanks!
When I got to the part about Jett confronting Seaberry's family, I clicked on ALL of them except Kaori, so I got too comfortable in thinking they'd all be ok [emoji=spiral sad size=1]
Tbh, was kinda glad Kahlil died too, just as a lil bit of revenge for the Tavern Family after being pushed around so much by Jett!

Honestly, I think Scoril is one of my most complex and developed characters! I don't know how much of that comes through in the writing, but wow, she's a lot more important than I expected her to be when I first got her!
I really enjoyed writing from Kael's POV! Also, Kaori's death gets even more heartbreaking when you realize that Kestrel never got the chance to meet her, or even realize that she had a sister. :(

Hehehe, you can never get too comfortable in the final battle! And yes, I figured that it was time to have someone on Jett's side die too.

Jett's breathing rasped in his chest, his body aching all over. He never knew something could hurt quite so much as those Gem Guardians. He had to get back to the palace, and he had to do it now, before anyone else could find him and hurt him. He'd call back his guard, and focus his attention on making sure those gem guardians were destroyed.
He could still feel the Shade surging strong within him. It wasn't as strong as it once was, but he was still more powerful than any dragon in this clan. Plus, only the Shade touched would be able to see as clear as day with the Shade mist still blanketing the city.
It was then that Jett caught sight of two shapes darting down an alleyway. More dragons running, that was exactly what he needed. He paid them little mind as he continued his dash back to the palace.
Just then, Jett felt a burst of pain in his side. It stung, barely noticeable in comparison to the explosive pain of the gem guardians, but someone was attacking him. He whirled around to face Coldstorm and Cantarelli emerging from a nearby ally. Coldstorm's lightning armor was re-activated. It must have been a bolt from that that hit him.

Still, Jett couldn't help but smirk at their approach. They were skinnier, obviously weakened by their years in the prison tower. This would be an easy fight.
It was then that he noticed Cantarelli's gem guardian, and his confidence faltered.

Still, he had to stand his ground. He shot out Shade magic at both of them. The twin bolts careened into the two advancing dragons, knocking them off guard. He directed the Shade magic into the mechanisms of Coldstorm's lightning weapon, consuming the magic stores within and rendering it useless. Both dragons were pushed backwards, but this dissuaded neither of them.
It was Coldstorm, relentless in his attack despite his loss of weapon, who struck first. Talons met Jett's face and he screamed in pain. The wounds, however, did not bleed. They simply expelled enough Shade to mend them. No physical attack would hurt him for long. The Shade would hold him together. It needed him as a vessel, and it would look out for him.
Jett struck back with equal ferocity, his wounds leaving marks on the opposing wildclaw. He was tiring quickly. But it was still two against one, and Cantarelli fought with an equal energy to that of her mate.
Just then, a familiar shape descended from the sky to join the fray.

Jett could see the pained expressions in the couple's face as their adoptive daughter joined the fray. The two of them may have raised Solstice, but it was Jett who had made her what she was today.
Solstice pulled Cantarelli off of Jett, drawing her into a fight.
"Sol, you don't have to do this. You're welcome home with us. I know Dahlia misses you," Cantarelli urged. Solstice just scoffed.
"You think I miss your humble little life? With Jett, I'm so much more than I could ever be on my own! Jett's kingdom is what's going to lead this clan forward, not your dinky little family!" Solstice laughed, landing a good blow on Cantarelli's face.
Jett kicked off of the ground and took to the skies, immediately pulling his wings down to take a hard landing on Coldstorm. The wildclaw didn't have the strength to resist him and buckled under his weight. Jett then snapped his neck in one clean movement. He stepped off of the wildclaw, not even bothering to look back.
"Finish her, and prove your loyalty to me!" Jett snarled at Solstice. He say determination flash in her darkened eyes, and her jaws aimed for Cantarelli's neck.
Just then, Catarelli did something unexpected. Taking the gem from her gem guardian, she smashed it over her head. There was a burst of plague magic, but it was a lot smaller than the previous bursts of elemental magic. It was almost as if she was consuming the magic into her own body. Her eyes flared red, and the air smelt of rot and disease.
Solstice yelped in pain and leaped back. Cantarelli paid her ex-daughter no mind, focusing her unblinking glare instead on Jett.
Jett could tell the magic was too much for her body to contain. Already, her hide was weakening, mushrooms exploding out of it her skin withering and exploding in boils. She wasn't going to be able to hold it together very long.
Cantarelli made her last moments count. With a rush of unexpected speed, the nocturne charged at Jett, tackling him full force. Her touch burned him, sapping his strength and causing him to writhe in pain. As she let go of her control on the magic, she exploded in a blast of plague magic, filling Jett with white-hot pain.
Once it subsided, Jett scrambled to his feet, feeling weakened but unwilling to give up the fight. A few feet away, Solstice sat, eyes wide with shock.
"Cantarelli?" A voice croaked from behind Jett. He spun around to see Coldstorm raising his head to look around for his mate, eyes hollow.
"But I killed you!" Jett spat.
"You're going to have to try a lot harder for me to die," Colstorm panted, getting to his feet again. "Now, what did you do with Cantarelli?"
"She's gone," Jett smirked. "Gave up her life to try to kill me. Pity that it didn't work."
The grief in Coldstorm's eyes brought Jett so much more satisfaction than killing him ever would. He was weakened, his weapon broken, his mate dead. It would be much better to let him live with it all, even if killing him were an option. He turned again to Solstice, ready to rub salt in the wound one last time.
"You okay?" He asked his heir.
"Just a little singed, that's all," Solstice smirked.
"You ready to go?" Jett asked. Solstice got to her feet and followed him as he disappeared through a nearby alleyway. He'd have to hide somewhere long enough to regain some of his strength before he attempted to make his way back to the palace.

It pained me to kill Cantarelli, she's always been one of my favourites, but I had to do it. It's time for Coldstorm to work alone.
Also, my friends @DancingKing and @CleverDual said that my pinkerlocke has basically turned into this song for the final battle.
If anyone wants to claim Cantarelli, you have until 23:59 FR time tomorrow (Tuesday) to do so before she is trained an exalted.
