He was angry, more angry than he had ever been in his life. His favourite daughter had been taken from him, his only heir powerful enough to take his place. Scoril hardly seemed to hear him. The skydancer had been distraught ever since the news of Kala's death reached the palace. She had been turning into a wreck lately, losing her nerve. It was pathetic. First it was Katie, then Kael ran away, and now she had lost Kala. She was going to have to get used to loss if she wanted to win this war. Besides, it wasn't as if they didn't have any children left. Worst came to worst, they could always make more. No, Jett was far more concerned about what this meant for the security of his crown. Solstice would make a loyal queen, but she was not his flesh and blood. Her magic was weaker than he would have liked as well, having not been born with the Shade. And then there was Kestrel. His youngest daughter wanted nothing to do with Shade magic. She had so much potential, but she refused to do anything. No, if he wanted to maintain a firm hold on the kingdom, he would have to create more heirs. It took too long to have nests and raise children, he would have to start infecting more loyal warriors if he wanted to stand a chance. In the meantime, he would have to take every precaution, and that was why the elemental ball could not go forwards this year. He could not leave any opening for attack until his side was once again strengthened. It was time to really get down to business. It was time to wipe out his competition entirely. It had come as a surprise, and at a very inopportune time. The resistance was moving to the observatory, and everything was in transit. The camp was almost packed up, now it was just time to move the dragons. As Friday approached the nesting grounds, he was greeted by Landon bounding up towards him. Friday grinned down at the hatchling. "Hi!" Landon exclaimed. His attention was fully on the gem guardian, eyes wide with awe. He barely paid the imperial any attention. "Do you want to play with it a bit?" Friday asked, hoping his gem guardian would be interested in that. He wasn't used to having familiars around. "Yeah!" Landon exclaimed, leaping playfully around the gem guardian. To Friday's relief, the spirit complied, and began engaging the hatchling in some sort of game of tag. Friday left the two of them to find Gwenfron and Gelato in the nesting grounds. Friday stopped as he caught sight of shattered eggshells and amniotic fluid on the ground. The clearing was surprisingly devoid of hatchlings, which could only mean- "The city took most of them," Gwenfron admitted as she saw her father's horrified expression. "But it let us keep one." She held out her arms to reveal a sleeping bogsneak hatchling. Friday had his doubts about the bogsneak, but at least he seemed to be doing right by Gwenfron. "It's horrible timing really, with the move and everything, but hatchlings happen when they want to happen," Gwenfron shrugged. "She's beautiful," Friday said softly. "And we'll make sure you all get settled into the observatory so you can get started on your lives as parents." Friday noticed Gwenfron flinch at the thought, but he made no comment. All of this had been unexpected for her, it was no surprise she wasn't sure about motherhood. But that didn't erase the fact that there was a child who would need love and support growing up. No matter what, Friday would make sure that she would get it. ----- Next ----- @CleverDual @HauntedWhale @Disillusionist @AlchemyFox @Tirtouga678 @catmeow1 @Leopardmask @Midwinter @chantric @Dynami @ShinyDecidueye @tigressRising @REEEEEEEEEEEEEE @Stitched @Willnotgogently @Sabariel @MisterMylez @Skystrider @Starongie @icetail0912 @myriadofstars @Aetherstorm @Weredogalism @Nargeorgicorn @WeaverofLies @herobrinna @secretlylying @Azurepocalypse @GoldictheHedgefx @CobaltMoon @Tiffkaboo @Orodruin @SkullGeist @Violeteevee @Amaluna @DragonPrincess27 @Dakala @Drachenschwinge @Glassowary @GrinningWolf24 @CleverTrick ----- Art Remaining hatchlings, you have until they grow up to claim them. Remaining hatchlings, you have until they grow up to claim them.

@Petall So many new hatchlings O.o
And...and I'm sorry, but I had to laugh so hard when I read her name is Hermann...Poor girl xD
(If you don't understand why: Hermann is an old german name for men, you usually see only 60+ years old people with that name nowadays)

@Petall Whoooo, these chapters are really starting with a bang! Literally in this case. Poor Scoril -- I know she's also fallen far, but the way Jett looks at her is really sickening. I'm hoping she'll be able to break free soon, if at all. Friday looks good with that familiar! A nice, matchy pair. And speaking of looking good: My word, Hermann is a gorgeous hatchling! That rich purple tert, wow! I also like how Friday is stepping up as a mentor, maybe even an uncle figure to other hatchlings. He's right; living as they all are, out in the wilderness, those kids are gonna need a lot of support. Your art of Kael is pretty good! I think you're improving with the coloring. The lines flow more evenly now. @Petall

Oh wow, poor Genfron and Gelato losing basically their entire nest.... Hermann is quite a looker though, even if her name is unfortunate. X)

...I also love that first bog gal. I really don't need to hoard more dragons, though.... so um, I will take her when she grows up, if no one else takes her in, alright? That way then others have a chance to snag her first. ;^^

@Drachenschwinge

It is a rather unfortunate name, isn't it? But I gotta go with what the name randomizer gives me, so Hermann it is!

@Disillusionist

Yeah, Scoril may be a villain, but she's been duped by Jett and blinded by her love for him.

It's kind of exciting to a) have hatchling from different nests so close together in age and b) have the time to write their childhood together! It makes for a lot of cool crossover!

Thank you!

@GrinningWolf24

I know, right? With a 4 egg nest, I was expecting to keep more than one of them!

Alright, sounds good! If no one else claims her by then, I'll send her your way!

The day she had been dreaming of had finally come - she was going to get the Shade. The wildclaw stared up at her, as though sizing her up. She hoped he wasn't reconsidering. She had worked hard to deserve this honor, and finally it was coming to fruition. "Fallstar, you have what it takes to become one of my heirs. You are dedicated, loyal and ambitious. You take every opportunity to grow in power. You have only one fault, and that has prevented me from bestowing this upon you sooner, but times are getting desperate and we need more Shade warriors." Jett explained. "Tell me my weakness, your majesty, so that I may quash it," The ridgeback growled. "I appreciate your spirit, but I am afraid your fault is in your bloodline, not in your abilities," Jett sighed. "I swore I would never give one of your family a chance at the throne, but it seems I am running out of options." "My bloodline?" Fallstar was confused. "But my mother is a powerful mage, and my father is unrelentingly loyal." "I only have Elladan's loyalty because I pay him well for it," Jett admitted. "Though you are right that your mother is powerful, and that same power runs through your veins. The misfortune is in the fact that your mother also shares in the blood of Age's lineage." "I don't understand," Fallstar's line was spinning. "We stole Edna away as a hatchling, from Dusk and Darkstar's nest. While she is a valued asset to our cause, to allow any of her bloodline on the throne would be a betrayal to everything we have fought to build," Jett explained. Fallstar's head was reeling from all this information. How could she stem from something she loathed so much? "I am telling you this now so that you do not jump ship after gaining my gift if you learn of this later," Jett explained. "If you become one of my heirs, then you must swear that if you take the throne after I fall, that you allow none of your bloodline to take control, even if they are the most powerful Shade mages in the clan. If it continues down your line, I may as well have never ruled at all." "I hate Age's family, you can fear no betrayal from me," Fallstar snarled. She wondered if this is what had caused Friehalt to fall away, that dirty traitor. "I have killed two of her bloodline already, and I count them as my greatest accomplishments. I vow I will never even have children, so as to cut off the line as it still stands." "Very good," Jett's face cracked into one of his signature crooked grins. "Now, my precious daughter, it is time for you to receive your gift." The wildclaw held out a vial filled with an inky black liquid. Fallstar gleefully took it and cracked it open, downing it as if it were the force that would save her life. Immediately, she felt it's presence within her, hungrily gnawing at her elemental magic. She did not fight it. Instead, she allowed it entry, feeding it until none of her shadow magic remained and her stores were filled with the power of the Shade. "Welcome aboard, Fallstar," Jett stared up at her with a deep love in his eyes. "Now you know the meaning of true power." His comments were beginning to feel like knives on Dellenger's back. "Relax, we just took a wrong turn, that's all! I promise the circus is close!" Dellenger said smoothly, betraying none of his internal anxiety. He didn't know where any circuses were, he never had. He had hoped they would have stumbled across one by now, but they had not. "It's okay, Starling! I'm sure Dellenger knows what he's doing," Celia responded, flashing a smile at the wildclaw. Dellenger was certain that the pearlcatcher had a crush on him. It was a nice feeling, even if he didn't reciprocate. "I thought for sure this city would have a circus," Dellenger said, looking around at the abandoned buildings. "It looks like my information is a bit out of date. Or we're in the wrong city." "Hey, are those lights on over there?" Starling lit up, running ahead of the wildclaw towards what looked like a tavern. A swinging sign hung above the door, announcing it as The Siren's Call. A beautiful silhouette of a spiral in the shape of a heart embellished the wood below. Warm scents of food wafted through the door, causing Dellenger's stomach to rumble. It had been a while since they had eaten. "We don't exactly have money," Dellenger warned. "Who cares! I'm sure we can work something out! Everyone loves a good dance!" Celia grinned, pushing past her brother to open the door. Dellenger reluctantly followed the two in. The tavern was fairly empty for an establishment of this variety, though judging by the sheer number of empty buildings around, that should not have been a surprise. The counter was manned by a beautiful purple spiral. Dellenger wondered if this was who the sign was modeled after. "Hello, how can I help you?" She asked. "What's your name?" Dellenger asked, awe-struck by her beauty. He had never felt so enamored by a dragon before. "Karma," The spiral responded, "But don't get any ideas, kid. I don't do romance." Dellenger felt his heart sink, but he did his best not to let on. "Would you be willing to accept a performance in exchange something to eat?" Celia asked eagerly. "We don't exactly have any money." "While i would love to take you up on that," Karma rolled her eyes sarcastically. "Money is kind of tight in this town right now. There's a bit of a war going on, and business is down." "Please, we've been traveling for weeks," Starling pleaded. "We're just trying to find a circus to join, but I don't know how much further we'll be able to go." "Oh, kid, you're out of luck," Karma winced. "Once you arrive in the Forgotten Kingdom, you're kind of here to stay. If you're looking for a circus to join, you'll have to create it yourself." "What do you mean?" Celia's eyes widened. "I mean this city is under a curse. It is very difficult to leave the kingdom, not after you've been pulled in here to begin with," Karma explained. "Tell you what, you're all very young and look very tired, and this is a big reality to wrap your mind around, so how about I give you a meal and a night in one of our rooms on the house, and tomorrow I can help you find somewhere to get settled?" "Thank you," Starling sighed. "That would be a big help." Now that they were secure, the pearlcatcher was beginning to look around the tavern properly. "You know, this is actually quite a nice little city. I think we could do really well here." "I don't know if we're looking at the same city," Dellenger huffed. "Hey, I noticed there was a big theatre behind the tavern," Starling exclaimed. "Are there any dragons working there, or is it up for grabs?" "The ampitheatre?" Karma asked. "Yeah, that's been empty for ages. No one's done anything in it as far as I've been alive. You guys are welcome to it if you want to set up your theatre there, though I can't promise many dragons will come out to see your performances while the war is going on." "Tell me more about this war," Dellenger asked, interest piqued. "Now that, is a long story," Karma sighed. "Why don't I tell it to you after you've ordered and I get you your food. You all look so hungry, you're about to fall over!" Dellenger realized that she was right. He did feel a bit weak in the knees, and Celia was swaying. Starling was leaning against the counter for support. The three dragons submitted their orders, then moved to sit at a nearby empty table. Starling and Celia immediately began chatting about their plans for the theatre, while Dellenger fell deep into thought. He had been doubtful about this city at first, but there was something that intrigued him now. Perhaps this would be a better place to stay than he thought. ----- Next ----- @CleverDual @HauntedWhale @Disillusionist @AlchemyFox @Tirtouga678 @catmeow1 @Leopardmask @Midwinter @chantric @Dynami @ShinyDecidueye @tigressRising @REEEEEEEEEEEEEE @Stitched @Willnotgogently @Sabariel @MisterMylez @Skystrider @Starongie @icetail0912 @myriadofstars @Aetherstorm @Weredogalism @Nargeorgicorn @WeaverofLies @herobrinna @secretlylying @Azurepocalypse @GoldictheHedgefx @CobaltMoon @Tiffkaboo @Orodruin @SkullGeist @Violeteevee @Amaluna @DragonPrincess27 @Dakala @Drachenschwinge @Glassowary @GrinningWolf24 @CleverTrick ----- Death Streak was Marasi, Edna and Citronella, and they all came out alive on the other side!

Fallstar quivered as she stood before King Jett, trying not to betray her anticipation.

"I swore I would never give one of your family a chance at the throne, but it seems I am running out of options."

"My bloodline?" Fallstar was confused. "But my mother is a powerful mage, and my father is unrelentingly loyal."

"I only have Elladan's loyalty because I pay him well for it," Jett admitted. "Though you are right that your mother is powerful, and that same power runs through your veins. The misfortune is in the fact that your mother also shares in the blood of Age's lineage."

"I don't understand," Fallstar's line was spinning.

If it continues down your line, I may as well have never ruled at all."

"I hate Age's family, you can fear no betrayal from me," Fallstar snarled. She wondered if this is what had caused Friehalt to fall away, that dirty traitor. "I have killed two of her bloodline already, and I count them as my greatest accomplishments. I vow I will never even have children, so as to cut off the line as it still stands."

"Very good," Jett's face cracked into one of his signature crooked grins. "Now, my precious daughter, it is time for you to receive your gift."

The wildclaw held out a vial filled with an inky black liquid.

"Now you know the meaning of true power."

"We're lost," Starling pointed out, not for the first time. His comments were beginning to feel like knives on Dellenger's back.

Or we're in the wrong city."

"Hey, are those lights on over there?" Starling lit up, running ahead of the wildclaw towards what looked like a tavern.

Dellenger wondered if this was who the sign was modeled after.
dragon?did=54489021&skin=0&apparel=278,24714&xt=dressing.png

"Hello, how can I help you?" She asked.

"What's your name?" Dellenger asked, awe-struck by her beauty. He had never felt so enamored by a dragon before.

"Karma," The spiral responded, "But don't get any ideas, kid. I don't do romance."

Dellenger felt his heart sink, but he did his best not to let on.

"Would you be willing to accept a performance in exchange something to eat?" Celia asked eagerly. "We don't exactly have any money."

"While i would love to take you up on that," Karma rolled her eyes sarcastically. "Money is kind of tight in this town right now. There's a bit of a war going on, and business is down."

"Please, we've been traveling for weeks," Starling pleaded. "We're just trying to find a circus to join, but I don't know how much further we'll be able to go."

"Oh, kid, you're out of luck," Karma winced. "Once you arrive in the Forgotten Kingdom, you're kind of here to stay. If you're looking for a circus to join, you'll have to create it yourself."

"What do you mean?" Celia's eyes widened.

"I mean this city is under a curse. It is very difficult to leave the kingdom, not after you've been pulled in here to begin with," Karma explained. "Tell you what, you're all very young and look very tired, and this is a big reality to wrap your mind around, so how about I give you a meal and a night in one of our rooms on the house, and tomorrow I can help you find somewhere to get settled?"

"Thank you," Starling sighed. "That would be a big help." Now that they were secure, the pearlcatcher was beginning to look around the tavern properly. "You know, this is actually quite a nice little city. I think we could do really well here."

"I don't know if we're looking at the same city," Dellenger huffed.

@Petall I see a lot of stories where the good character is reeling from finding out about having some sort of connection to the Bad Guys, so it was nice to see Fallstar going, "Oh my gosh, I'm related to the good guys, eeeeeww!" for a change. I'm actually kind of glad she didn't have second thoughts about her loyalty to Jett. Makes for a more interesting story! Wow!! [emoji=bogsneak star] Dellenger, Starling, and Celia all look fantastic. Celia's outfit is probably my favorite of the bunch. That accent matches her colors so well! Dellenger and Karma? That's pretty interesting, and goodness knows the city could use a circus after everything that's happened there. I'm glad these three ran into Karma first, but as they say, you never know~

He had yet to figure out where he fit into all of this. He drew away from the stage to let the siblings rehearse and to give himself some space to think. He found himself wandering the ascending seats, the voices of the performance carrying up to him. It was soothing, weaving the rows and working his way higher and higher. Once he reached the top, he was surprised to hear a voice call to him from the shadows of a nearby alleyway. "Is that any way to talk to your king?" The wildclaw's eyebrow arched. "King Jett!" Dellenger's mouth grew dry as he realized he was staring into the face of the dragon Karma had told him so much about on the night they arrived. "That's more like it!" The king smirked. "What do you want with me?" Dellenger asked. "You show promise," Jett explained, beginning to circle the young wildclaw. "I need more heirs to strengthen my rule. If you prove to be strong enough, I might consider taking you on." "But Karma-" Dellenger spoke before he realized what he was saying, and immediately shut his mouth as the name slipped out. "Karma is jealous because she is my flesh and yet does not have the strength to be one of my heirs," Jett shook his head. "A tragedy really. Pay no mind to what she says, she's just grown bitter over the years." What the king said made sense. Karma had seemed pretty angry about King Jett. Besides, what he was being offered might be exactly what he was looking for.
