Day 131: When I Grow Up

Bok sighed as he put down the basket he had been carrying, unwilling to peer at the eggs within. He had done it, he had finally gotten the eggs from Kestrel. The problem was, now he was stuck raising them.
He had tried to find homes across the city for them, the spirals at the tavern had agreed to take them in, and so had Luci, but in Kestrel's eyes, none of them had been good enough to raise her children. She grew more and more attached to the eggs by the day, but yet as each day passed, there were more close calls when it came to the nest being found out. Eventually, Kestrel pleaded Bok to take them and raise them, and he found he couldn't tell her no.
The only question now was how the hell he was going to raise two hatchlings when he never had a proper childhood of his own. Heck, he didn't even have a proper job! How was he going to provide for two kids and raise them without messing them up?
All of a sudden, Bok's youth seemed far behind him. This was not where he saw himself when he imagined himself in the future. He had imagined himself as a great poet, earning money for his art. It was, after all, the only thing he was good at. Now he had to raise two children on a non-existent poet salary.
Just as the reality was dawning on him, he heard a crack that made his stomach turn. Hardly daring to look, he lifted the blanket wrapping the eggs, and saw the two quivering forms, cracks running down the shells. It was time. He was going to be a father.
With the utmost haste, he lifted the eggs from the basket, leaving behind the obsidian fertility state Kestrel had found and given them for good luck. He set them down on his bed, willing to sacrifice them to the egg fluid to ensure their safety. He had no doubt that Kestrel would kill him if any harm came to their babies.
After what seemed like an eternity, the first hatchling burst into the world, gasping to take his first breath. He immediately looked around, still dripping in egg goop, and curled up, quivering in the sudden cold.
Bok cursed, before remembering you probably weren't supposed to swear around hatchlings, and scooped him up, trying to warm him. Immediately, he snuggled into the coatl's feathers, causing Bok to squirm uncomfortably. He was not cut out for this.
Moments later, the second egg exploded, sending eggshell shards flying across the room in all directions. Bok felt a few pierce his scales, one narrowly missing his eye. His son let out a yelp as his tender skin was grazed at well, and squirmed closer into his feathers. Bok looked up to see his newly born daughter.
Unlike the boy, this hatchling's eyes were open, and they were inky black. Bok shuddered, immediately wracked with guilt that he should fear his own daughter. But the truth was undeniable - she had inherited her mother's Shade magic.
After a moment, the black faded into her natural violet, and she stared unblinkingly up at Bok. She did not cry or gasp for air, and the force of the blast had sent her egg fluid around the room. If not for her size, it would be difficult to place her as a newborn. She immediately began to explore her surroundings, indifferent towards her father and brother.
"Well, I should probably give you names, shouldn't I?" Bok muttered. He and Kestrel had spoken a bit about names, though she had settled on favourites far more easily than he had. "You can be Lester," He pat his son on the head, giving him Kestrel's choice name for a boy before turning his attention to his daughter. She would need a special name, and she did not suit any of the cutesy girl names that Kestrel had picked out. "You can be Lelani," he told her, giving her the name of one of his favourite poets.
"Those are fine names," a voice suddenly sounded from across the room. Bok whirled in surprise, causing Lester to squeak. He was no longer alone.
Standing in the basket, where the fertility statue once stood, was a corven draped in purple robed. He wore an unimpressed expression as he surveyed Bok's humble abode. He had not taken the time to clean it in the past while.
"Well, it looks like I am free of that wretched statue that Jett trapped me in again. I guess it was only a matter of time before one of Jett's descent summoned me out again," the beastclan muttered, dusting off his robes. "I'm Koraki, and it looks like you could use some help."

Guess who's back? I've been trying to find a way to fit him in again for months! And now I finally have the opportunity!
Coli was Jett, Accident and Solstice, and they made it through all 30 battles with no issue. If Scoril leveled up to level 7 and brought them to the Scorched Forest, I imagine results would have been very different!
Also, if you are looking for something else to read, CleverDual has just set up the thread for The Bachelor Season 2!!! You don't have to have read the first season to join in the fun, but if you have time, I would highly recommend giving that a read as well, because there are some crossovers! CleverDual did a fantastic job with it, and I am very excited to see how season 2 goes as well!
