TOPIC | Supplemental: Custom Skin & Accent Rules
Hello everyone! Thank you for your patience while we brought the Custom Skin & Accent Rules and FAQ page up to date for 2022.

There are some minor clarifications in today’s update, such as clarifying that skins and accents are Flight Rising site items, and some larger changes. These updates are also based on past submissions that pushed the previous line set by our rules or created a new situation or issue we’ve decided we do not want to allow on our website.

The Big Updates

Wound Updates

The previous version of the rules allowed for some gore, just not excessive gore. This was an attempt to walk a delicate balance between what we want for our site as a whole and what a small percentage of our community wanted to portray on their dragons. Over the years this has proved to be the most problematic rule, leading to frustration, confusion, and delayed approvals. In order to streamline the approval process and remove any confusion about the line between some gore and excessive gore, we have come to the decision to prohibit gore-focused skins altogether.

We consider gore to be actively bleeding wounds, fresh wounds, or discernable organs and viscera. Healed scars and blood spatter are generally okay. These clarifications are in the new skin rules page.

The aforementioned items provide hard lines that will be easier for our skin artists to follow. Please note that skins that don't directly break these hard lines but still create an effect our team deems too extreme will be evaluated on a case-by-case basis as before. It's difficult to predict every combination that may create a gore effect but we hope that these guidelines will make the approval process easier by spelling out specific items that will result in a rejection so they can be more easily avoided.

NOTE: Existing skins that were approved under the previous iteration of the wound rules will be grandfathered in, but reprints will not be allowed.

No Political Content, and Especially No Propaganda

Flight Rising is a 2D virtual pet browser game. We’re not a platform for political discourse or political/state propaganda.

NOTE: Do not report skins or accents with LGBTQIA+ representation under this update. LBGTQIA+ representation is not political or state propaganda, but the expression of self and identity.

No Substance Use

Designs that depict substance use are not allowed, even if that substance is legal in your country. This is in keeping with the site's overall rules for community content.

Guns
We do not allow the use of modern day guns. Weapons with a more fantastical or historical basis, such as a blunderbuss or sci-fi laser gun, are generally acceptable.

The Clarifications

Skins and Accents Become User-Generated Flight Rising In-Game Items

They’ve always been in-game items—and why the Terms of Use for trading applies to them once a design is turned into a skin/accent—but the previous iteration of the rules didn’t clearly use that title, leading to additional confusion about why the approval process is performed on a case-by-case basis, and leaving our players with the understandable impression of an inconsistent process:

In short, because skins and accents are in-game items, skin and accent approval or rejection is done and will always be done on a case-by-case basis for liability reasons.

Skins and Accents Are Not Exempt From the Terms of Use or Rules & Policies

In other words, if you’re submitting a design with the goal to, or has the end result of:
  • Attack another player(s), volunteer(s), or staff;
  • Impersonate another player(s), volunteer(s), or staff;
  • Troll the community;
  • Otherwise communicate prohibited content or behavior;

Then your submission will be rejected.

As always, these rules are subject to change. Skins and accents will continue to be evaluated and approved or rejected on a case-by-case basis.
